Cytogenetic studies of early myeloid progenitor compartments in Ph1- positive chronic myeloid leukemia. II. Long-term culture reveals the persistence of Ph1-negative progenitors in treated as well as newly diagnosed patients
We recently showed that long-term marrow cultures can be used to demonstrate the presence of Philadelphia (Ph1) negative progenitors in patients with newly diagnosed Ph1-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). We now report results for 6 chronic phase patients studied 5-83 mo postdiagnosis and an additional 3 newly diagnosed patients. Marrow metaphases were exclusively Ph1-positive. Clonogenic assays revealed a minor population of Ph1-negative progenitors in 3 cases (1 treated, 2 untreated). Long-term marrow culture adherent layers contained Ph1- negative progenitors in 6 cases (3 treated, 3 untreated). Whenever this occurred, the Ph1-negative population had become the only one detectable within 3-4 wk, and this was always associated with a rapid decline of the Ph1-positive population. For 2 of the 3 cases where Ph1- negative progenitors were not detected, there was a similar rapid decline in the Ph1-positive population in culture. In the other case, Ph1-positive progenitors were maintained at levels typically seen in normal long-term marrow cultures. These results suggest that chromosomally normal stem cells may persist for a considerable period in the marrow of some, but perhaps not all, patients with CML, even in the face of maintenance chemotherapy. In addition, they provide new evidence of heterogeneity in this disease, as shown by the variable ability of Ph1-positive progenitor populations to be maintained in vitro
Taking up the cudgels against gay rights? Trends and trajectories in African Christian theologies on homosexuality
Against the background of the HIV epidemic and the intense public controversy on homosexuality in African societies, this article investigates the discourses of academic African Christian theologians on homosexuality. Distinguishing some major strands in African theology, that is, inculturation, liberation, women’s and reconstruction theology, the article examines how the central concepts of culture, liberation, justice, and human rights function in these discourses. On the basis of a qualitative analysis of a large number of publications, the article shows that stances of African theologians are varying from silence and rejection to acceptance. Although many African theologians have taken up the cudgels against gay rights, some “dissident voices” break the taboo and develop more inclusive concepts of African identity and African Christianity
History of adversity, health and psychopathology among prisoners: comparison between men and women
Adversity in childhood, risk behaviors
and psychopathology are highly prevalent phenomena
in inmate populations and have a strong
impact on health. Knowing the differences in these
variables between the sexes is most important in
order to develop appropriate intervention strategies
in a prison context. By administering the
Socio-demographic and Life History Questionnaire
and the Brief Symptoms Inventory, we
sought to characterize adverse childhood experiences
and relate them to risk behaviors and to
psychopathological symptoms, and study the differences
between the 65 male and 42 female detainees
in Portuguese prison establishments. Men
and women report a complex web of adversity in
childhood. In a range of ten possible categories, a
medium value of 5.05 (DP = 2.63) in total adversity
for women and 2.63 (DP = 2.18) for men was
encountered, with the prevalence being significantly
higher within the female population (Z =
-4.33; p = .000). A high prevalence of risk behaviors
and psychopathological symptoms was found
in both groups, the latter being higher among females.
We concluded that the differences between
men and women calls for in depth studies in order
to provide guidelines for intervention projects
in specific populations.

Infância e o Brief Symptons Inventory, procuramos
caracterizar a adversidade na infância, os
comportamentos de risco e as dimensões psicopatológicas,
e averiguar as diferenças entre 65 homens
e 42 mulheres reclusos em estabelecimentos
prisionais Portugueses. Homens e mulheres relatam
um quadro complexo de adversidade na infância.
Num total possível de dez categorias, verificamos
uma média de adversidade total de 5.05
(DP = 2.63) para as mulheres e de 2.63 (DP =
2.18) para os homens, sendo a prevalência significativamente
mais elevada junto da população
feminina (Z = -4.33; p = .000).
Macroscopic Quantum Coherence in a Magnetic Nanoparticle Above the Surface of a Superconductor
We study macroscopic quantum tunneling of the magnetic moment in a
single-domain particle placed above the surface of a superconductor. Such a
setup allows one to manipulate the height of the energy barrier, preserving the
degeneracy of the ground state. The tunneling amplitude and the effect of the
dissipation in the superconductor are computed.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, 1 figure. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Non-isospectrality of the generalized Swanson Hamiltonian and harmonic oscillator
The generalized Swanson Hamiltonian with , can be transformed into an equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian
with the help of a similarity transformation. It is shown that the equivalent
Hermitian Hamiltonian can be further transformed into the harmonic oscillator
Hamiltonian so long as constant. However, the
main objective of this paper is to show that though the commutator of
and is constant, the generalized Swanson
Hamiltonian is not necessarily isospectral to the harmonic oscillator. Reason
for this anomaly is discussed in the frame work of position dependent mass
models by choosing as the inverse square root of the mass function.Comment: Accepted in Journal of Physics A. Comments are welcom
Oxidation resistance of graphene-coated Cu and Cu/Ni alloy
The ability to protect refined metals from reactive environments is vital to
many industrial and academic applications. Current solutions, however,
typically introduce several negative effects, including increased thickness and
changes in the metal physical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate for the
first time the ability of graphene films grown by chemical vapor deposition to
protect the surface of the metallic growth substrates of Cu and Cu/Ni alloy
from air oxidation. SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS studies show that the
metal surface is well protected from oxidation even after heating at 200
\degree C in air for up to 4 hours. Our work further shows that graphene
provides effective resistance against hydrogen peroxide. This protection method
offers significant advantages and can be used on any metal that catalyzes
graphene growth
Financial crises and the attainment of the SDGs: an adjusted multidimensional poverty approach
This paper analyses the impact of financial crises on the Sustainable Development Goal of eradicating poverty. To do so, we develop an adjusted Multidimensional Poverty Framework (MPF) that includes 15 indicators that span across key poverty aspects related to income, basic needs, health, education and the environment. We then use an econometric model that allows us to examine the impact of financial crises on these indicators in 150 countries over the period 1980–2015. Our analysis produces new estimates on the impact of financial crises on poverty’s multiple social, economic and environmental aspects and equally important captures dynamic linkages between these aspects. Thus, we offer a better understanding of the potential impact of current debt dynamics on Multidimensional Poverty and demonstrate the need to move beyond the boundaries of SDG1, if we are to meet the target of eradicating poverty. Our results indicate that the current financial distress experienced by many low-income countries may reverse the progress that has been made hitherto in reducing poverty. We find that financial crises are associated with an approximately 10% increase of extreme poor in low-income countries. The impact is even stronger in some other poverty aspects. For instance, crises are associated with an average decrease of government spending in education by 17.72% in low-income countries. The dynamic linkages between most of the Multidimensional Poverty indicators, warn of a negative domino effect on a number of SDGs related to poverty, if there is a financial crisis shock. To pre-empt such a domino effect, the specific SDG target 17.4 on attaining long-term debt sustainability through coordinated policies plays a key role and requires urgent attention by the international community
Prototype ATLAS IBL Modules using the FE-I4A Front-End Readout Chip
The ATLAS Collaboration will upgrade its semiconductor pixel tracking
detector with a new Insertable B-layer (IBL) between the existing pixel
detector and the vacuum pipe of the Large Hadron Collider. The extreme
operating conditions at this location have necessitated the development of new
radiation hard pixel sensor technologies and a new front-end readout chip,
called the FE-I4. Planar pixel sensors and 3D pixel sensors have been
investigated to equip this new pixel layer, and prototype modules using the
FE-I4A have been fabricated and characterized using 120 GeV pions at the CERN
SPS and 4 GeV positrons at DESY, before and after module irradiation. Beam test
results are presented, including charge collection efficiency, tracking
efficiency and charge sharing.Comment: 45 pages, 30 figures, submitted to JINS
Measurement of the Dipion Mass Spectrum in X(3872) -> J/Psi Pi+ Pi- Decays
We measure the dipion mass spectrum in X(3872)--> J/Psi Pi+ Pi- decays using
360 pb-1 of pbar-p collisions at 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector.
The spectrum is fit with predictions for odd C-parity (3S1, 1P1, and 3DJ)
charmonia decaying to J/Psi Pi+ Pi-, as well as even C-parity states in which
the pions are from Rho0 decay. The latter case also encompasses exotic
interpretations, such as a D0-D*0Bar molecule. Only the 3S1 and J/Psi Rho
hypotheses are compatible with our data. Since 3S1 is untenable on other
grounds, decay via J/Psi Rho is favored, which implies C=+1 for the X(3872).
Models for different J/Psi-Rho angular momenta L are considered. Flexibility in
the models, especially the introduction of Rho-Omega interference, enable good
descriptions of our data for both L=0 and 1.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures -- Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Evidence for the exclusive decay Bc+- to J/psi pi+- and measurement of the mass of the Bc meson
We report first evidence for a fully reconstructed decay mode of the
B_c^{\pm} meson in the channel B_c^{\pm} \to J/psi \pi^{\pm}, with J/psi \to
mu^+mu^-. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 360 pb$^{-1} in
p\bar{p} collisions at 1.96 TeV center of mass energy collected by the Collider
Detector at Fermilab. We observe 14.6 \pm 4.6 signal events with a background
of 7.1 \pm 0.9 events, and a fit to the J/psi pi^{\pm} mass spectrum yields a
B_c^{\pm} mass of 6285.7 \pm 5.3(stat) \pm 1.2(syst) MeV/c^2. The probability
of a peak of this magnitude occurring by random fluctuation in the search
region is estimated as 0.012%.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Version 3, accepted by PR
