Utilizing the Messaging Layer Security Protocol in a Lossy Communications Aerial Swarm

    Get PDF
Recent advancements in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capabilities have led to increasing research into swarming systems. Unfortunately, efforts to date have not resulted in viable secure communications frameworks, and the limited processing power and constrained networking environments that characterize these systems preclude the use of many existing secure group communications protocols. The Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, currently under development at the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), offers some attractive properties for these types of systems. This work looks at integrating MLS into the Advanced Robotic Systems Engineering Laboratory (ARSENL) UAV swarm system as a means of assessing its efficacy. Implementation test results are presented both for experiments conducted in a simulation environment and with physical UAVs

    Get PDF

Verification of a Distributed Ledger Protocol for Distributed Autonomous Systems Using Monterey Phoenix

    Get PDF
Autonomous multi-vehicle systems are becoming increasingly relevant in military operations and have demonstrated potential applicability in civilian environments as well. A problem emerges, however, when logging data within these systems. In particular, potential loss of individual vehicles and inherently lossy and noisy communications environments can result in the loss of important mission data. This paper describes a novel distributed ledger protocol that can be used to ensure that the data in such a system survives and documents verification of the behavioral correctness of this protocol using informal verification methods and tools provided by the Monterey Phoenix project

Precision control and maneuvering of the Phoenix autonomous underwater vehicle for entering a recovery tube

    Get PDF
Because of range limitations imposed by speed and power supplies, covert launch and recovery of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) near the operating area will be required for their use in many military applications. This thesis documents the implementation of precision control and planning facilities on the Phoenix AUV that will be required to support recovery in a small tube and provides a preliminary study of issues involved with AUV recovery by submarines. Implementation involves the development of low-level behaviors for sonar and vehicle control, mid-level tactics for recovery planning, and a mission planning system for translating high-level goals into an executable mission. Sonar behaviors consist of modes for locating and tracking objects, while vehicle control behaviors provide the ability to drive to and maintain a position relative to a tracked object. Finally, a mission-planning system allowing graphical specification of mission objectives and recovery parameters is implemented. Results of underwater virtual world and in-water testing show that precise AUV control based on sonar data and its use by higher-level tactics to plan and control recovery. Additionally, the mission-planning expert system has been shown to reduce mission planning time by approximately two thirds and results in missions with fewer logical and programming errors than manually generated missionshttp://archive.org/details/precisioncontrol00daviLieutenant, United States Nav

A Survey Study of Elementary Teachers\u27 Perceptions of Student Classroom Behavior

    Get PDF
In a midwest, rural, and high-poverty elementary school, teachers expressed concerns about difficult student behaviors in their classrooms. It was important to address the problem because student misbehavior disrupts the learning of all students in the classroom. To provide information to the school that could inform possible interventions, a survey was conducted that measured the perceptions of 24 classroom teachers about concerning student behaviors, their methods of dealing with such behaviors, their needs for further support, and their confidence in dealing with difficult student behaviors. The conceptual frameworks that guided this study were the behaviorist theories of Watson and Skinner. The survey responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics. A Mann-Whitney U test was conducted for each of the survey questions to determine whether any statistically significant differences between the survey responses of independent variable groups of grade level (Kindergarten-3 and 4-6) and teacher experience (novice and veteran teachers). Findings showed only 1 statistically significant difference between the Grades K-3 and 4-6 teachers\u27 use of books and published materials to deal with concerning student behavior. A professional development initiative was created that will use professional learning community groupings already present in the school for teachers to research and implement changes to their professional practices in dealing with concerning student behaviors. This study may lead to an improved learning environment for teachers and students, an enhanced school reputation, and further parental and community support

Habitação e habitações no ocaso da modernidade:

    Get PDF

Maturation of the gilt\u27s uterus before puberty: response to progesterone at different ages

We determined the age at which progesterone induced certain responses in the gilt\u27s uterus. The prepubertal maturation permitting each response is being studied currently with the intent of using the information to develop methods to improve litter size in pigs, perhaps by identifying markers for uterine function that could be used before gilts enter the breeding herd.; Swine Day, Manhattan, KS, November 16, 199
