The nutritive value of animal proteins : the biological values of fishmeal, whale and fishmeal, meatmeal, meat and bonemeal, crayfishmeal, and white fishmeal

    Get PDF
By means of nitrogen metabolism experiments, the biological values of 94 for white fishmeal, 81 for crayfishmeal, 71 for fishmeal, 67 for meatmeal, 67 for meat and bonemeal and 63 for whale and fishmeal were determined. From these figures and the digestibility coefficients it was shown that white fishmeal is superior in its utilizable protein content, and that whale and fishmeal is the poorest in this respect. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 300dpi. The endogenous nitrogen metabolism of pigs with special reference to the maintenance protein requirement

    Get PDF
The endogenous nitrogen metabolism of pigs have been measured and an equation evolved for the estimation of the maintenance protein requirements of pigs. The equation obtained is P=0.79 W·⁷³⁴, where P=protein in grams, and W weight in Kgm.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 300dpi. Experimental osteodystrophic diseases in goats

    (1) Starvation proved to be an important factor in the development of bone atrophy in the case of two kids which received a ration low in calcium and high in phosphorus, where the CaO:P₂O₅ ratio was wide. (2) Clinical symptoms of rickets were observed only in a case where the phosphorus intake was low and that of calcium high, with a wide ratio. (3) When the calcium and phosphorus intakes were both low, their ratio being normal, the histological examination of the bone showed the presence of rickets. (4) The inhibition of normal growth, due to semi-starvation, resulted in the eventual development of bone atrophy and not osteofibrosis. Even rickets, which is more easily produced than osteofibrosis, in time gives way to atrophy in the presence of cessation of bone growth. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 300dpi. A study on the possibility of cystine synthesis in the rumen of sheep together with the effect of cystine supplementation on the nitrogen utilization of lucerne in young stock

    Get PDF
By means of metabolism experiments on rats it was shown that the biological value of the rumen ingesta is better than that of lucerne. When rumen ingesta are supplemented by cystine their biological value is significantly enhanced. In sheep experiments it was shown that the inclusion of cystine in a lucerne ration for mature sheep did not influence the biological value of the latter. For growing sheep the supplementation of lucerne by cystine increased its biological value by 10 per cent. It is concluded that the action of the micro-organisms is purely a question of interception, that is, utilizing exogenous protein for its own use and supplying it back to the animal in the bacterial and infusorial form. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 300dpi. How assessment and reflection relate to more effective learning in adaptive management

Assessment (an immediate evaluation of significance or performance) and reflection (a lengthy, deep consideration) should be important components of adaptive management leading to learning. In this paper we use a prototype adaptive cycle and feedback framework, which are related to some aspects of learning theory, to examine the extent to which assessment and reflection were applied in a series of studies and initiatives in the Kruger National Park. In addition to evaluating assessment and reflection, we also considered how the various contributing components of each case were inter-related to provide a holistic view of each initiative
