The activity of soil respiration in selected plant communities and cereal crops in the Kurowka river Valley (protection zone of NNP)
Badania aktywności oddychania gleby prowadzono w sezonie
2005 w dolinie rzeki Kurówki (dopływ Narwi) na trzech transektach
z dwudziestoma czterema stanowiskami. Transekty poprowadzono od
wyniesienia terenu do rzeki Kurówki, a na poszczególnych stanowiskach
zamontowano piezometry. Obejmowały one pola uprawne ze zbożami,
zbiorowiska zaroślowe, łąkowe, szuwarowe i zarośla wierzbowe.
Na badanym terenie występują gleby piaszczyste, gliniaste oraz organiczne
na terasie zalewowej rzeki Kurówki.
Badania szaty roślinnej prowadzono w sezonie wegetacyjnym
2005. Roślinność zbadano powszechnie stosowaną metodą Braun-
Blanqueta, wykonując łącznie 32 zdjęcia fitosocjologiczne. Układ syntaksonomiczny
oraz przynależność syntaksonomiczną gatunków przyjęto
za Matuszkiewiczem [2001], zaś nomenklaturę roślin naczyniowych
podano wg Mirka i in. [1995]. Do badania aktywności oddychania gleby
zastosowano zestaw OxiTop®- Control firmy WTW. Podstawą metody
jest rejestracja ubytku/konsumpcji tlenu zużytego przez organizmy
aerobowe rozkładające substancję organiczną, czyli biologiczna aktywność
gleby. Podczas inkubacji przez 12 godzin w szafie klimatycznej
w 20°C. Zawartość substancji organicznej w glebie oszacowana została
metodą wagową wg Ostrowskiej i in. [1991].
Wstępne wyniki wykazują, że stanowiska najbardziej wilgotne,
z których próbki glebowe odznaczały się wysokim tempem oddychania,
obejmowały łąki świeże i zbiorowiska okresowo zalewane (z dominującymi
Glyceria maxima i Phragmites austarlis), a najniższe w uprawach
zbożowych. W większości próbek gleby pobór tlenu jest wprost proporcjonalny
do zawartości materii organicznej. Badanie aktywności organizmów ryzosfery będę kontynuowane
przez następne dwa sezony wegetacyjne. The respiration rate activity in the soil were examined in the vegetative season
in 2005 in the Kurówka River basin in three transects comprising twenty four sites.
The transects were developed from the terrain elevation towards the Kurówka River
and covered arable lands with rye and wheat, shrub and meadow communities, sedge
rushes, and willow shrubs.
On the study area sandy and clay soil with organic soil on the Kurówka River
floodplain
The plant communities were investigated using the commonly applied method
of Braun-Blanquet including modifications by Matuszkiewicz (2001). In arbitrarily
selected points, phytosociological 32 releves were executed. Nomenclature of species
was taken from the Checklist of vascular plants of Poland (Mirek et al. 1995).
The respiration rate activity in the soil was examined using the OxiTop® -
Control system (WTW). The results were determined as the amount of oxygen consumption
taken by aerobic organisms in the soil samples incubated during 12 hours
in 20. Organic matter level were examined by Ostrowska et al. method (1991)
Preliminary results of the respiration rate activity show that damp sites, characterised
by a high respiration rate, comprised fresh and damp meadows (with dominant
Glyceria maxima and Phragmites australis) in the summer and autumn period
opposite to cereal crops.
Higher content of organic mater in soil samples increase oxygen consumption
by soil microorganisms.
Studies on the activity of rhizosphere organisms will be continued in the next
two vegetative seasons
Distribution of mycorrhizal fungi on selected plants in the Kurówka River valley communities
Badania grzybów mikoryzowych prowadzono w latach 2005-2007 w zlewni rzeki Kurówka, w trzech transektach (TI, TII, TIII) na dwudziestu czterech stanowiskach. Transekty poprowadzono od wyniesienia terenu do rzeki. Badaniami objęto uprawy zbóż, zbiorowiska zaroślowe i łąkowe z klasy Molinio-Arrhenatheretea, zbiorowiska szuwarowe z klasy Phragmitetea oraz zarośla wierzbowe z klasy Alnetea glutinosae. Próbki gleby z korzeniami roślin pobierano z warstwy powierzchniowej (do 25 cm), z każdego stanowiska. Na każdym stanowisku pobierano korzenie dominujących gatunków roślin zielnych, krzewów oraz drzew - łącznie pobrano korzenie 30 gatunków roślin. Korzenie płukano pod bieżącą wodą i w przypadku grzybów ektomikoryzowych (EMG) analizowano pod mikroskopem stereoskopowym, a korzenie roślin z grzybami arbuskularnymi (AGM) barwiono, przygotowywano preparaty i analizowano pod mikroskopem świetlnym. Wstępna analiza połączeń mikoryzowych wykazała, że spośród gatunków ektomikoryzowych dominował Cenoccocum geophillum Fr. występujący u drzew i krzewów zasiedlających siedliska okresowo zalewane i leśne suche. Z morfotypów ektomikoryzowych duży udział miał rodzaj Russula, następnie Amphinema, Thelephora, Hebeloma i Cortinarius. Rośliny, u których stwierdzono mikoryzę arbuskularną we wszystkich próbkach korzeni to: mozga trzcinowata (Phalaris arundinacea L.), trzcina pospolita (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud), śmiałek darniowy (Deschampsia caespitosa (L.) P. Beauv) i wierzba szara (Salix cinerea L.).Mycorrhizal associations were examined in the vegetative seasons 2005–2007 in the Kurówka River Basin along three transects (TI, TII, TIII) comprising twenty four sites. The transects were drawn from the terrain elevation towards the Kurówka River and covered cultivated grain fields, shrub and meadow communities, sedge rushes, and willow shrubs, including the classes Artemisietea vulgaris, Phragmitetea, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and Alnetea glutinosae. Plant roots were sampled from the topsoil up to a depth of 25 cm in each site. Dominant plants in individual sites as well as herbaceous and tree species were selected. As many as 30 plant species were sampled. Roots forming ectomycorrhizae were analyzed under a stereoscope. Roots forming arbuscular mycorrhizae were stained; diagnostic slides were made and analyzed under a light microscope. The analysis of mycorrhizal associations shows that Cenoccocum geophillum Fr., which occurs in trees and shrubs colonising periodically flooded habitats and dry forest habitats, predominated. A high contribution of the genus Russula, followed by the genera Amphinema, Thelephora, Hebeloma and Cortinarius, was recorded among ectomycorrhizal morphotypes. Arbuscular mycorrhizae were recorded in all the root samples of the following plants: Phalaris arundinacea L. (reed canary grass), Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud (common reed), Deschampsia caespitosa (L.) P. Beauv (tufted hair grass) and Salix cinerea L. (grey willow)

A systematic conservation plan identifying critical areas for improved chondrichthyan protection in South Africa
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates that over a third of all chondrichthyan species (sharks, rays and chimaeras) are threatened with extinction, primarily by overfishing (as target or bycatch species). Owing to the wide-ranging distributions of many chondrichthyans, they are often overlooked in marine protected area (MPA) design. South Africa is a biodiversity hotspot for chondrichthyan species diversity, and to improve the conservation status of these species in the country's continental exclusive economic zone (EEZ), we collaborated widely to collate existing occurrence data. Ensemble models were developed for 87 species' distributions, which informed a systematic conservation planning analysis for 64 threatened and endemic species. We assessed the current representation of these species in South Africa's MPA network and identified priority areas for protection, avoiding fishing pressure where possible. Results show that many MPAs are well placed to protect chondrichthyans, especially along the east coast (KwaZulu-Natal province). Unfortunately, permissive fishing regulations within many MPA zones reduces their effectiveness at protecting chondrichthyans. Improved regulations designed to protect chondrichthyans within all MPAs should be considered a high priority. Priority areas for increased spatial protection were identified along the west coast continental shelf, the Agulhas Bank off the south coast, and south coast embayments. We found that supplementing the current MPA network by an additional 5 % of the EEZ would be sufficient to protect >30 % of the range of all 64 species, provided there is adequate enforcement. As South Africa prepares to expand its MPA estate to meet international targets, these findings can ensure that chondrichthyans are well represented.
•We collaborated widely to collate occurrence data on 164 chondrichthyan species in South Africa.•Distribution models were developed for 87 chondrichthyan species.•Priority areas for protection were identified using systematic conservation planning.•Priority areas included the shelf offshore of the west and south coast.•South Africa's MPA regulations require better management to protect chondrichthyans
