    A Prisoner's Daughter: An Autoethnographic Account of the Effect of Incarceration on the Families of White Collar Offenders

    Thesis advisor: Stephen PfohlThesis advisor: David KarpThis work uses the method of autoethnography to explore and present the story of one family's struggle with the incarceration of the primary wage earner. This thesis was structured around major defining moments or events in my “career” as the daughter of a white-collar criminal, and the ways in which my identity has shifted as a result of my experience. Each chapter outlines a specific milestone or experience along my career path--from learning of my father's arrest, to visiting him in prison two years later. This thesis presents the contagious spread of shame and “guilt by association” with my father’s alleged “deviance” is outlined, and illustrates the ways in which the experience of incarceration can function as a form of collective punishment for every member of the family. Borrowing from Goffman’s dramaturgical model of interaction, (Goffman, 1959) this paper is heavily influenced by the notion of what happens to actors when their roles are suddenly and drastically altered? How do these actors cope with the change within themselves—how they conceptualize their identity, how they interact with their previous environment or stage, and how they interact with other actors. The change in identity that comes from the arrest and subsequent incarceration of a family member is a long and daunting process, and this paper attempts to catalogue the tumultuous journey towards self-understanding and self-acceptance after this major shift in status.Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2012.Submitted to: Boston College.     Comparison of soil contamination at the selected European copper mines

    ABSTRACT: This article reports the results of a study concerning contamination of the dump-fields by potentially toxic elements at five abandoned copper mines: Ľubietová, Špania Dolina (Slovakia), Libiola, Caporciano (Italy) and São Domingos (Portugal). This paper offers an updated description of soil contamination at the individual deposits and indicates a possible solution of the derived environmental problems. Contamination of technosoils by PTEs at the dump-fields shows an irregular spatial distribution of Fe, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb and Pb. Contents of PTEs often exceed both national and EU law limits. Whereas at Ľubietová, Špania Dolina and Caporciano the environmental risk is limited, at Libiola and São Domingos it seems to be very heavy. The technosoil (slag) of the dump-fields is not well aerated and the soil colloids have (except for Špania Dolina) negative surface charge, so they are suitable for PTEs sorption. The main environmental risk in the mining area of Sao Domingos district is the long time formation of acid mine drainage water and the high Zn, As and Pb contents. The release of PTEs to the environmental components may be limited by phytostabilization and immobilization of metals, by suitable admixtures into the technosoil/slag. The environmental situation at Caporciano is not so compromised as at São Domingos mining area. Phytostabilization will be able to stop erosion, and installation of wetlands under the dump will stop the release of Cu to the environment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Cancer Genomics Identifies Regulatory Gene Networks Associated with the Transition from Dysplasia to Advanced Lung Adenocarcinomas Induced by c-Raf-1

    Background: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer morbidity. To improve an understanding of molecular causes of disease a transgenic mouse model was investigated where targeted expression of the serine threonine kinase c-Raf to respiratory epithelium induced initialy dysplasia and subsequently adenocarcinomas. This enables dissection of genetic events associated with precancerous and cancerous lesions. Methodology/Principal Findings: By laser microdissection cancer cell populations were harvested and subjected to whole genome expression analyses. Overall 473 and 541 genes were significantly regulated, when cancer versus transgenic and non-transgenic cells were compared, giving rise to three distinct and one common regulatory gene network. At advanced stages of tumor growth predominately repression of gene expression was observed, but genes previously shown to be upregulated in dysplasia were also up-regulated in solid tumors. Regulation of developmental programs as well as epithelial mesenchymal and mesenchymal endothelial transition was a hall mark of adenocarcinomas. Additionaly, genes coding for cell adhesion, i.e. the integrins and the tight and gap junction proteins were repressed, whereas ligands for receptor tyrosine kinase such as epi- and amphiregulin were up-regulated. Notably, Vegfr- 2 and its ligand Vegfd, as well as Notch and Wnt signalling cascades were regulated as were glycosylases that influence cellular recognition. Other regulated signalling molecules included guanine exchange factors that play a role in an activation of the MAP kinases while several tumor suppressors i.e. Mcc, Hey1, Fat3, Armcx1 and Reck were significantly repressed. Finally, probable molecular switches forcing dysplastic cells into malignantly transformed cells could be identified. Conclusions/Significance: This study provides insight into molecular pertubations allowing dysplasia to progress further to adenocarcinoma induced by exaggerted c-Raf kinase activity

    The Importance of Environmental Food Quality Labels for Regional Producers: A Slovak Case Study

    Regional products are considered an important element of European cultural identity, contributing to the development and sustainability of rural areas. The article presents the research of regional labels from the territory of the Slovak Republic. Our research was aimed at determining the views of producers towards the regional product labeling scheme. The survey took place from January 2020 to April 2020 using an online questionnaire via Google Docs. The results obtained from the questionnaire survey were statistically processed: t-test, Fisher’s exact test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. We used Microsoft Excel and IBM SPSS Statistics 23 software. Based on the research results, we can state that two-thirds of producers (71.8%) are aware of the concept of a regional product. Most producers (82.0%) associate this concept with tradition and a specific region. They consider regional product labeling to be a tool to support the development of tourism (36.0%). A quarter of producers (25.7%) joined this scheme in order to add value to their products and help make consumers perceive them as safer products of higher quality. Based on the research results, we would recommend increasing the promotion of regional products on the part of the label coordinator

    The surface of catalytically active spinels

    By substitution of the Mn and Co cations in different sites in the spinel structure of Mn3O4 and Co3O4, by other cations which are not active in the selective reduction of nitrobenzene to nitrosobenzene, the role of these sites in the catalytic reaction can be studied. By combining activity measurements with quantitative surface analysis by low-energy ion scattering, which only probes the outermost atomic layer, the catalytic performance can be related to the surface composition. The results suggest that octahedral sites are exposed almost exclusively at the surface of the spinel oxide powders and that only these sites participate in the reaction. The only two low-index planes of the spinel structure which can satisfy this condition are identified as B(111) and D(110). Although the present results pertain to Mn3O4 and Co3O4, it is believed that the absence of occupied tetrahedral sites at the surface is a more general property of spinels
