Configuring the HYSPLIT Model for National Weather Service Forecast Office and Spaceflight Meteorology Group Applications
The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Melbourne, FL (NWS MLB) is responsible for providing meteorological support to state and county emergency management agencies across East Central Florida in the event of incidents involving the significant release of harmful chemicals, radiation, and smoke from fires and/or toxic plumes into the atmosphere. NWS MLB uses the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model to provide trajectory, concentration, and deposition guidance during such events. Accurate and timely guidance is critical for decision makers charged with protecting the health and well-being of populations at risk. Information that can describe the geographic extent of areas possibly affected by a hazardous release, as well as to indicate locations of primary concern, offer better opportunity for prompt and decisive action. In addition, forecasters at the NWS Spaceflight Meteorology Group (SMG) have expressed interest in using the HYSPLIT model to assist with Weather Flight Rules during Space Shuttle landing operations. In particular, SMG would provide low and mid-level HYSPLIT trajectory forecasts for cumulus clouds associated with smoke plumes, and high-level trajectory forecasts for thunderstorm anvils. Another potential benefit for both NWS MLB and SMG is using the HYSPLIT model concentration and deposition guidance in fog situations
Measuring the Cluster Magnetic Field Power Spectra from Faraday Rotation Maps of Abell 400, Abell 2634 and Hydra A
We apply a novel technique of Faraday Rotation measure (RM) map analysis to
three galaxy clusters, Abell 400, Abell 2634 and Hydra A, in order to estimate
cluster magnetic field strengths, length scales and power spectra. This
analysis is based on the assumption that the magnetic fields are statistically
isotropically distributed across the Faraday screen. We investigate the
difficulties involved in the application of the analysis to observational data.
We derive magnetic power spectra for the three clusters and discuss influences
on their shapes. We show that magnetic fluctuations are probed on length scales
ranging over at least one order of magnitude. Using this range for the
determination of central cluster magnetic field strength yields 3 muG in Abell
2634, 6 muG in Abell 400 and 12 muG in Hydra A. The magnetic field
autocorrelation length was determined to be 4.9 kpc for Abell 2634, 3.6 kpc for
Abell 400 and 0.9 kpc for Hydra A. We show that the RM autocorrelation length
is larger than the magnetic field autocorrelation length. We investigate in a
response analysis if it is possible to determine spectral slopes of the power
spectra. We find that integrated numbers can be determined from this analysis
but differential parameters such as spectral slopes have to be treated
differently. Our response analysis results in spectral slopes of the power
spectra of spectral indices alpha = 1.6 to 2.0 suggesting that Kolmogorov
spectra are possible but flatter spectral slopes than alpha = 1.3 can be
excluded.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted by A&
Momentum space separation of quantum path interferences between photons and surface plasmon polaritons in nonlinear photoemission microscopy
Quantum path interferences occur whenever multiple equivalent and coherent
transitions result in a common final state. Such interferences strongly modify
the probability of a particle to be found in that final state, a key concept of
quantum coherent control. When multiple nonlinear and energy-degenerate
transitions occur in a system, the multitude of possible quantum path
interferences is hard to disentangle experimentally. Here, we analyze quantum
path interferences during the nonlinear emission of electrons from hybrid
plasmonic and photonic fields using time-resolved photoemission electron
microscopy. We experimentally distinguish quantum path interferences by
exploiting the momentum difference between photons and plasmons and through
balancing the relative contributions of their respective fields. Our work
provides a fundamental understanding of the nonlinear photon-plasmon-electron
interaction. Distinguishing emission processes in momentum space, as introduced
here, will ultimately allow nano-optical quantum-correlations to be studied
without destroying the quantum path interferences
