Search for hyperdeformation in U isotopes

The U-232 nucleus was studied in order to search for a hyperdeformed band built upon the third minimum of the fission barrier. Upper limits for the percentage population of a hypothetical hyperdeformed band relative to the ground state band are given

Review of Metastable States in Heavy Nuclei

    No full text
The structure of nuclear isomeric states is reviewed in the context of their role in contemporary nuclear physics research. Emphasis is given to high-spin isomers in heavy nuclei, with A & 150. The possibility to exploit isomers to study some of the most exotic nuclei is a recurring theme. In spherical nuclei, the role of octupole collectivity is discussed in detail, while in deformed nuclei the limitations of the K quantum number are addressed. Isomer targets and isomer beams are considered, along with applications related to energy storage, astrophysics, medicine, and experimental advances

Superdeformed multi-quasiparticle high-K states and possible isomers in Pb and Po isotopes

    Get PDF
Configuration-constrained potential-energy-surface calculations have been performed to investigate multi-quasiparticle high-K states built on superdeformed minima in Pb-192,Pb-194,Pb-196 and Po-198. The calculations predict that Pb-196 and Po-198 would be favorable candidates for the observation of low-lying superdeformed two-and four-quasiparticle high-K states. The possible decay paths and lifetimes that could lead to isomers are evaluated in detail for Pb-196. Comparisons between the predictions and previous observations of octupole-vibrational excitations indicate also that bands built on superdeformed high-K intrinsic states may compete with the octupole-vibrational mode in this mass region. The quadrupole moments of both the collective and intrinsic excitations are analyzed.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000304808300004&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Physics, NuclearSCI(E)3ARTICLE6null8
