    Modified H-Plane Sectoral Horn for FSS Sensing Applications

    The Use of Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs) as Sensors Has Found Recent Success in the Structural Health Monitoring Realm. FSS Theory Assumes Infinite FSS Dimensions and Planewave Illumination. However, in Practice, an FSS Sensor is Finite, and the Illuminating Field Varies Across the Plane of the Sensor. as Such, it is of Interest to Reduce the Nonuniformity of the Incident Electromagnetic Energy Incident on the Sensor. to This End, This Work Explores the Modification of a Standard H-Plane Sectoral Horn through the Addition of a Ridge to Generate a Uniform Electric Field over a Specified Region of Interest. in Addition to This Modified Antenna, Standard Gain (Pyramidal) and H-Plane Sectoral Horns Were Also Considered for Comparison. the Results Show that Variation in the Electric Field Pattern is Reduced for the Modified Sectoral Horn but at the Cost of Matching Properties

    First Year Students\u27 Experience in a Cyber World Course - An Evaluation

    Although cybersecurity is a major present concern, it is not a required subject in University. In response, we developed Cyber World which introduces students to eight highly important cybersecurity topics (primarily taught by none cybersecurity experts). We embedded it into our critical thinking Common Course (core curriculum) which is a team-taught first-year experience required for all students. Cyber World was first taught in Fall 2018 to a cohort of over 150 students from various majors at the University of New Haven. This article presents the evaluation of our Fall taught course. In detail, we compare the performance of Cyber World students to other Common Course sections that ran in parallel and conclude that despite the higher workload students performed equally well. Furthermore, we assess the students’ development throughout the course with respect to their cybersecurity knowledge where our results indicate a significant gain of knowledge.     Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSSs) Are Two-Dimensional Periodic Arrays of Electrically Conductive Elements or Apertures that Have a Specific Electromagnetic Reflection And/or Transmission Response. in This Work, an Aperture-Based Sensor Design Was Proposed that is Capable of Sensing Strain When Embedded in a Layered Dielectric Structure (I.e., an Embedded Sensor). an Aperture Approach Was Selected Due to the Potential for Operation in Reflection Mode Without a Conductive Backplane. the Sensor Was Designed to Operate within the K-Band to Improve the Potential Strain Measurement Resolution, as the Unit Cell Dimensions Are Inversely Related to the Operating Frequency and Directly Related to Strain Sensitivity. Simulation Results for the Small-Scale Strain Range of 0-0.5% Are Presented, with a Sensitivity of 20.4 MHz/O.1 % Strain

    Language access differentially alters functional connectivity during emotion perception across cultures

    Introduction It is often assumed that the ability to recognize the emotions of others is reflexive and automatic, driven only by observable facial muscle configurations. However, research suggests that accumulated emotion concept knowledge shapes the way people perceive the emotional meaning of others’ facial muscle movements. Cultural upbringing can shape an individual’s concept knowledge, such as expectations about which facial muscle configurations convey anger, disgust, or sadness. Additionally, growing evidence suggests that access to emotion category words, such as “anger,” facilitates access to such emotion concept knowledge and in turn facilitates emotion perception. Methods To investigate the impact of cultural influence and emotion concept accessibility on emotion perception, participants from two cultural groups (Chinese and White Americans) completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning session to assess functional connectivity between brain regions during emotion perception. Across four blocks, participants were primed with either English emotion category words (“anger,” “disgust”) or control text (XXXXXX) before viewing images of White American actors posing facial muscle configurations that are stereotypical of anger and disgust in the United States. Results We found that when primed with “disgust” versus control text prior to seeing disgusted facial expressions, Chinese participants showed a significant decrease in functional connectivity between a region associated with semantic retrieval (the inferior frontal gyrus) and regions associated with semantic processing, visual perception, and social cognition. Priming the word “anger” did not impact functional connectivity for Chinese participants relative to control text, and priming neither “disgust” nor “anger” impacted functional connectivity for White American participants. Discussion These findings provide preliminary evidence that emotion concept accessibility differentially impacts perception based on participants’ cultural background

    Chandra Observations of the Dwarf Nova WX Hyi in Quiescence

    We report Chandra observations of the dwarf nova WX Hyi in quiescence. The X-ray spectrum displays strong and narrow emission lines of N, O, Mg, Ne, Si, S and Fe. The various ionization states implied by the lines suggest that the emission is produced within a flow spanning a wide temperature range, from T ~ 10^6 K to T >~ 10^8 K. Line diagnostics indicate that most of the radiation originates from a very dense region, with n ~ 10^{13}-10^{14} cm^{-3}. The Chandra data allow the first tests of specific models proposed in the literature for the X-ray emission in quiescent dwarf novae. We have computed the spectra for a set of models ranging from hot boundary layers, to hot settling flows solutions, to X-ray emitting coronae. WX Hyi differs from other dwarf novae observed at minimum in having much stronger low temperature lines, which prove difficult to fit with existing models, and possibly a very strong, broad O VII line, perhaps produced in a wind moving at a few x 10^3 km/s. The accretion rate inferred from the X-rays is lower than the value inferred from the UV. The presence of high-velocity mass ejection could account for this discrepancy while at the same time explaining the presence of the broad O VII line. If this interpretation is correct, it would provide the first detection of a wind from a dwarf nova in quiescence.Comment: accepted to ApJ; 19 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
