Localization and Mapping from Shore Contours and Depth
This work examines the problem of solving SLAM in aquatic environments using an unmanned surface vessel under conditions that restrict global knowledge of the robot's pose. These conditions refer specifically to the absence of a global positioning system to estimate position, a poor vehicle motion model, and absence of magnetic field to estimate absolute heading. These conditions are present in terrestrial environments where GPS satellite reception is occluded by surrounding structures and magnetic inference affects compass measurements. Similar conditions are anticipated in extra-terrestrial environments such as on Titan which lacks the infrastructure necessary for traditional positioning sensors and the unstable magnetic core renders compasses useless. This work develops a solution to the SLAM problem that utilizes shore features coupled with information about the depth of the water column. The approach is validated experimentally using an autonomous surface vehicle utilizing omnidirectional video and SONAR, results are compared to GPS ground truth
Extended h-Index Parameterized Data Structures for Computing Dynamic Subgraph Statistics
We present techniques for maintaining subgraph frequencies in a dynamic
graph, using data structures that are parameterized in terms of h, the h-index
of the graph. Our methods extend previous results of Eppstein and Spiro for
maintaining statistics for undirected subgraphs of size three to directed
subgraphs and to subgraphs of size four. For the directed case, we provide a
data structure to maintain counts for all 3-vertex induced subgraphs in O(h)
amortized time per update. For the undirected case, we maintain the counts of
size-four subgraphs in O(h^2) amortized time per update. These extensions
enable a number of new applications in Bioinformatics and Social Networking

Parameterized Complexity of Asynchronous Border Minimization
Microarrays are research tools used in gene discovery as well as disease and
cancer diagnostics. Two prominent but challenging problems related to
microarrays are the Border Minimization Problem (BMP) and the Border
Minimization Problem with given placement (P-BMP).
In this paper we investigate the parameterized complexity of natural variants
of BMP and P-BMP under several natural parameters. We show that BMP and P-BMP
are in FPT under the following two combinations of parameters: 1) the size of
the alphabet (c), the maximum length of a sequence (string) in the input (l)
and the number of rows of the microarray (r); and, 2) the size of the alphabet
and the size of the border length (o). Furthermore, P-BMP is in FPT when
parameterized by c and l. We complement our tractability results with
corresponding hardness results
Favorable Outcomes of LVAD as Bridge to Simultaneous Heart-Kidney Transplantation
Background
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an established risk factor for incident cardiovascular disease and progression of heart failure disease state, and is associated with decreased survival after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy or heart transplantation (HT). Combined heart-kidney transplantation (HKT) compared with isolated HT recently has been shown to have survival advantage among patients whose estimated glomerular filtration rate is less than 37 ml/min/m2. Data on LVAD to HKT are limited.
Methods
At our center, a total of 803 patients have received HT, 594 patients LVAD therapy, and 23 patients HKT from single donors; of those 23, 15 were without the use of LVAD and 8 were after support with LVAD.
Results
Kaplan-Meier survival analysis found LVAD-supported patients with CKD stages 4 or 5 had statistically worse 24-month survival after HT as compared with those with CKD stage 1, 2, and 3 (58% vs 88%, p=0.01). Patients who received combined HKT after LVAD had comparable 24-month survival with those who received HKT without LVAD (87% and 85%, p=NS); both groups had numerically better survival compared with those who had CKD (stage 4-5) with isolated HT (58%).
Conclusions
Patients supported with LVAD who demonstrate advanced CKD (stage 4-5) have worse 24-month post-HT survival compared with those with less advanced CKD (stage 1-3). Combined HKT after LVAD support is feasible and confers comparable 24-month survival compared with HKT without prior LVAD therapy. Our study supports combined HKT for select LVAD patients with advanced CKD (stage 4-5)
The Lysyl Oxidase Inhibitor, β-Aminopropionitrile, Diminishes the Metastatic Colonization Potential of Circulating Breast Cancer Cells
Lysyl oxidase (LOX), an extracellular matrix remodeling enzyme, appears to have a role in promoting breast cancer cell motility and invasiveness. In addition, increased LOX expression has been correlated with decreases in both metastases-free, and overall survival in breast cancer patients. With this background, we studied the ability of β-aminopropionitrile (BAPN), an irreversible inhibitor of LOX, to regulate the metastatic colonization potential of the human breast cancer cell line, MDA-MB-231. BAPN was administered daily to mice starting either 1 day prior, on the same day as, or 7 days after intracardiac injection of luciferase expressing MDA-MB-231-Luc2 cells. Development of metastases was monitored by in vivo bioluminescence imaging, and tumor-induced osteolysis was assessed by micro-computed tomography (μCT). We found that BAPN administration was able to reduce the frequency of metastases. Thus, when BAPN treatment was initiated the day before, or on the same day as the intra-cardiac injection of tumor cells, the number of metastases was decreased by 44%, and 27%, and whole-body photon emission rates (reflective of total tumor burden) were diminished by 78%, and 45%, respectively. In contrast, BAPN had no effect on the growth of established metastases. Our findings suggest that LOX activity is required during extravasation and/or initial tissue colonization by circulating MDA-MB-231 cells, lending support to the idea that LOX inhibition might be useful in metastasis prevention
A Multivariate Approach for Checking Resiliency in Access Control
In recent years, several combinatorial problems were introduced in the area
of access control. Typically, such problems deal with an authorization policy,
seen as a relation , where means that
user is authorized to access resource . Li, Tripunitara and Wang (2009)
introduced the Resiliency Checking Problem (RCP), in which we are given an
authorization policy, a subset of resources , as well as
integers , and . It asks whether upon removal of
any set of at most users, there still exist pairwise disjoint sets of
at most users such that each set has collectively access to all resources
in . This problem possesses several parameters which appear to take small
values in practice. We thus analyze the parameterized complexity of RCP with
respect to these parameters, by considering all possible combinations of . In all but one case, we are able to settle whether the problem is in
FPT, XP, W[2]-hard, para-NP-hard or para-coNP-hard. We also consider the
restricted case where for which we determine the complexity for all
possible combinations of the parameters
Photoanodes on titanium substrates:one-step deposited BiVO4 versus two-step nano-V2O5 films impregnated with Bi3+
One-step deposition of photoelectrochemically active BiVO4 (monoclinic) from a polyethylene glycol (PEG300) precursor paint onto titanium substrates is demonstrated to lead to more complex multioxide phase films. Photocurrents in 0.5 M Na2SO4 remain relatively low when compared to those reported on tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) substrates, possibly due to the effect of detrimental underlying titanium oxide phases or mixed phases. For comparison, the one-step deposition is demonstrated also for the direct formation of V2O5 nanocrystalline films, which also exhibited low photoelectrochemical activity. Impregnation of nanocrystalline V2O5 with aqueous Bi3+ is shown to cause substantial recrystallization with formation of much more photoactive BiVO4. In particular, on low-temperature (high surface area) nano-V2O5 (400 °C) and after further mild annealing at 400 °C much improved photoelectrochemical water oxidation activity (ca. 0.3 mA cm−2 at 1.0 V vs Ag/AgCl (KCl (3 M) at 0.1-W cm−2 xenon lamp radiation) is observed. This opens up a new mild temperature two-step route for BiVO4 photocatalysts on practical titanium substrates.</p
