BACKGROUND: BLAST is one of the most common and useful tools for Genetic Research. This paper describes a software application we have termed Windows .NET Distributed Basic Local Alignment Search Toolkit (W.ND-BLAST), which enhances the BLAST utility by improving usability, fault recovery, and scalability in a Windows desktop environment. Our goal was to develop an easy to use, fault tolerant, high-throughput BLAST solution that incorporates a comprehensive BLAST result viewer with curation and annotation functionality. RESULTS: W.ND-BLAST is a comprehensive Windows-based software toolkit that targets researchers, including those with minimal computer skills, and provides the ability increase the performance of BLAST by distributing BLAST queries to any number of Windows based machines across local area networks (LAN). W.ND-BLAST provides intuitive Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) for BLAST database creation, BLAST execution, BLAST output evaluation and BLAST result exportation. This software also provides several layers of fault tolerance and fault recovery to prevent loss of data if nodes or master machines fail. This paper lays out the functionality of W.ND-BLAST. W.ND-BLAST displays close to 100% performance efficiency when distributing tasks to 12 remote computers of the same performance class. A high throughput BLAST job which took 662.68 minutes (11 hours) on one average machine was completed in 44.97 minutes when distributed to 17 nodes, which included lower performance class machines. Finally, there is a comprehensive high-throughput BLAST Output Viewer (BOV) and Annotation Engine components, which provides comprehensive exportation of BLAST hits to text files, annotated fasta files, tables, or association files. CONCLUSION: W.ND-BLAST provides an interactive tool that allows scientists to easily utilizing their available computing resources for high throughput and comprehensive sequence analyses. The install package for W.ND-BLAST is freely downloadable from . With registration the software is free, installation, networking, and usage instructions are provided as well as a support forum

Antitrust--Act of State Doctrine Precludes Judicial Review of Cases in which Private Defendant Induces Foreign Sovereign to Boycott Plaintiff\u27s Services and Products David R. Simon Plaintiff, a designer and manufacturer of short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft, sought damages from defendants for violation of sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Act. Specifically, plaintiff alleged that defendant\u27s employees falsely disparaged General Aircraft Corporation\u27s (GAC) STOL aircraft products and services by circulating false and misleading performance reports and engaged in a vendetta designed to drive GAC out of business because of GAC\u27s refusal to conduct Southeast Asian Helio sales under the auspices of defendant Doole and Air American. Plaintiff asserted that in furtherance of this vendetta, Air Asia obtained GAC proprietary data and trade secrets that enabled the defendant to fabricate Hello planes and parts without license at its repair facilities in Taiwan from 1962 to January 31, 1975. Finally, plaintiff alleged that defendant orchestrated a boycott of GAC\u27s STOL aircraft, thereby completing the conspiracy to destroy GAC\u27s competitive position in the marketplace. ==================================== Sovereign Immunity-- Act of State Doctrine--Claim Lies for Iran\u27s Failure to Compensate Following Nationalization David D. Dowd Plaintiffs, three corporations collectively representing American insurance interests in Iran in 1979, filed a motion for partial summary judgment on the issue of liability in an action for damages brought in response to the nationalization without compensation of plaintiffs\u27 Iranian insurance interests by defendants Islamic Republic of Iran and Central Insurance of Iran (CII). This nationalization severed all business relations between plaintiffs, defendants, and those Iranian insurance companies in which plaintiffs had invested. Plaintiffs claimed this nationalization provided no mechanism for adequate compensation in violation of the Treaty of Amity and, independently, international law. Defendants argued that either the act of state doctrine or sovereign immunity precluded the court from awarding partial summary judgment. On plaintiffs\u27 motion for partial summary judgment on liability under the Treaty of Amity and international law, granted

Using Positive Behavior Role Plays to Prepare Teacher Candidates for the Classroom: An Exercise for Classroom Management

Teacher education programs across the country may infuse the latest research and resources of best practices in managing a classroom but there are not many opportunities to practice guidance and managing classroom behavior unless it arises while teaching in the actual classroom. There is not often a time or place to “practice” managing the classroom environment or practice encountering misbehavior until the actual situation arises within a field placement in an elementary classroom of students. Role play allows preservice teachers to practice guidance and behavior management of K-12 students in the college classroom

Promoting Academic Integrity in Health Occupations Education

This article reviews the concept of academic integrity and its promotion by health occupations education faculty. Academic integrity is the use of a student’s own work only; thus, an absence of any form of cheating or plagiarism is assumed. Since a lack of academic integrity can translate into later unethical behaviors by students in clinical settings, health occupations teachers have an obligation to promote academic integrity and prevent student cheating. In addition to reviewing concepts of academic integrity and plagiarism, this article provides specific recommendations for health occupations education programs

Creating a Minimum Data Set on ageing in sub-Saharan Africa

The World Health Organisation, together with representatives of four sub-Saharan African countries (Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe) and other stakeholders, launched a project in 1999 to establish a Minimum Data Set on ageing and older persons in Africa. The project focusses on identifying what data are needed to build knowledge on the situation of older Africans and forging the centralised, in-country collation and dissemination of this information. This paper summarises the current state of the project and touches on issues of data availability and quality, while exploring methods for data collection, integration, collation and dissemination

A preliminary assessment into the utility of social networks for engaging local communities in climate adaptation policy: working paper prepared for NSW Office of Environment & Heritage, Sydney, Australia.

There has been a growing recognition regarding the use of social networks to engage the community in government actions. However, despite increasing awareness about the potential importance of social networks, there is very limited evidence for their application in relation to climate policy. This study addresses this gap by assessing the potential of social networks for engaging local communities in climate adaptation policy, drawing on a case study of the Shoalhaven region in Australia.
