Improving Satellite Leaf Area Index Estimation Based On Various Integration Methods

Leaf Area Index (LAI) is an important land surface biophysical variable that is used to characterize vegetation amount and activity. Current satellite LAI products, however, do not satisfy the requirements of the modeling community due to their large uncertainties and frequent missing values. Each LAI product is currently generated from only one satellite sensor data. There is an urgent need for advanced methods to integrate multiple LAI products to improve the product's accuracy and integrality for various applications. To meet this need, this study proposes four methods, including the Optimal Interpolation (OI), Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME), Multi-Resolution Tree (MRT) and Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF), to integrate multiple LAI products. Three LAI products have been considered in this study: Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) and Carbon cYcle and Change in Land Observational Products from an Ensemble of Satellites (CYCLOPES) LAI. As the basis of data integration, this dissertation first validates and intercompares MODIS and CYCLOPES LAI products and also evaluates their geometric accuracies. The CYCLOPES LAI product has smoother temporal profiles and fewer spatial variations, but tends to produce spurious large errors in winter. The Locally Adjusted Cubic-spline Capping algorithm is revised to smooth multiple years' average and variance. Although OI, BME and MRT based methods have been used in other fields, this is the first research to employ them in integrating multiple LAI products. This dissertation also presents a new integration method based on EOF to solve the problem of large data volume and inconsistent temporal resolution of different datasets. High resolution LAI reference maps generated with ground measurements are used to validate these algorithms. Validation results show that all of these four methods can fill data gaps and reduce the errors of the existing LAI products. The data gaps are filled with information from adjacent pixels and background. These algorithms remove the spurious large temporal and spatial variation of the original LAI products. The combination of multiple satellite products significantly reduces bias. OI and BME can reduce the RMSE from 1.0 (MODIS) to 0.7 and reduce the bias from +0.3 (MODIS) and -0.2 (CYCLOPES) to -0.1. MRT can produce similar results with OI but with significantly improved efficiency. EOF also generates the results with the RMSE of 0.7 but zero bias. Limited ground measurement data hardly prove which methods outperform the others. OI and BME theoretically produce statistically optimal results. BME relaxes OI's linear and Gaussian assumption and explicitly considers data error, but bears a much higher computational burden. MRT has improved efficiency but needs strict assumptions on the scale transfer function. EOF requires simpler model identification, while it is more "empirical" than "statistical". The original contributions of this study mainly include: 1) a new application of several different integration methods to incorporate multiple satellite LAI products to reduce uncertainties and improve integrality, 2) an enhancement of the Locally Adjusted Cubic-spline Capping by revising the end condition, 3) a novel comprehensive comparison of MODIS C5 LAI product with other satellite products, 4) the development of a new LAI normalization scheme by assuming the linear relationship between measurement error and LAI natural variance to account for the inconsistency between products, and finally, 5) the creation of a new data integration method based on EOF

The violent white dwarf merger scenario for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae

Recent observations suggest that some type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) originate from the merging of two carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs). Meanwhile, recent hydrodynamical simulations have indicated that the accretion-induced collapse may be avoided under certain conditions when double WDs merge violently. However, the properties of SNe Ia from this violent merger scenario are highly dependent on a particular mass-accretion stage, the so-called WD + He subgiant channel, during which the primary WD is able to increase its mass by accreting He-rich material from a He subgiant before the systems evolves into a double WD system. In this article, we aim to study this particular evolutionary stage systematically and give the properties of violent WD mergers. By employing the Eggleton stellar evolution code, we followed a large number of binary calculations and obtained the regions in parameter space for producing violent mergers based on the WD + He subgiant channel. According to these simulations, we found that the primary WDs can increase their mass by ~0.10-0.45 Msun during the mass-accretion stage. We then conducted a series of binary population synthesis calculations and found that the Galactic SN Ia birthrate from this channel is about 0.01-0.4*10-3 yr-1. This suggests that the violent WD mergers from this channel may only contribute to ~0.3%-10% of all SNe Ia in our Galaxy. The delay times of violent WD mergers from this channel are >1.7 Gyr, contributing to the SNe Ia in old populations. We also found that the WD + He subgiant channel is the dominent way for producing violent WD mergers that may be able to eventually explode as SNe Ia.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

The widespread application of present value technique in the area of financial accounting measurement, such as fair value measurement, pension plan valuation, impairment loss valuation, has highly improved the fairness and accuracy of accounting information. However, with the development of behavioral economics and many anomalies emerging, the growing criticism of conventional classic economic assumptions has become increasingly obvious, especially after the 2008 financial crisis. This paper mainly focuses on the appropriateness of discount theories and models application and the development direction of present value technique in the area of financial accounting measurement. The whole paper aimed to promote the development process in the field of present value technique, and expected to enhance the accuracy and fairness of accounting information

Merging of a CO WD and a He-rich white dwarf to produce a type Ia supernovae

Context: Although type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play a key role in astrophysics, the companions of the exploding carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs) are still not completely identified. It has been suggested recently that a He-rich WD (a He WD or a hybrid HeCO WD) merges with a CO WD may produce an SN Ia. This theory was based on the double-detonation model, in which the shock compression in the CO core caused by the surface explosion of the He-rich shell might lead to the explosion of the whole CO WD. However, so far, very few binary population synthesis (BPS) studies have been made on the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD in the context of SNe Ia. Aims: We aim to systematically study the Galactic birthrates and delay-time distributions of SNe Ia based on the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD. Methods: We performed a series of Monte Carlo BPS simulations to investigate the properties of SNe Ia from the merging of a CO WD and a He-rich WD based on the Hurley rapid binary evolution code. We also considered the influence of different metallicities on the final results. Results: From our simulations, we found that no more than 15% of all SNe Ia stem from the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD, and their delay times range from ~110 Myr to the Hubble time. This scenario mainly contributes to SN Ia explosions with intermediate and long delay times. The present work indicates that the merger scenario of a CO WD and a He-rich WD can roughly reproduce the birthrates of SN 1991bg-like events, and cover the range of their delay times. We also found that SN Ia birthrates from this scenario would be higher for the cases with low metallicities.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&

An Improved Algorithm for Fixed-Hub Single Allocation Problem

This paper discusses the fixed-hub single allocation problem (FHSAP). In this problem, a network consists of hub nodes and terminal nodes. Hubs are fixed and fully connected; each terminal node is connected to a single hub which routes all its traffic. The goal is to minimize the cost of routing the traffic in the network. In this paper, we propose a linear programming (LP)-based rounding algorithm. The algorithm is based on two ideas. First, we modify the LP relaxation formulation introduced in Ernst and Krishnamoorthy (1996, 1999) by incorporating a set of validity constraints. Then, after obtaining a fractional solution to the LP relaxation, we make use of a geometric rounding algorithm to obtain an integral solution. We show that by incorporating the validity constraints, the strengthened LP often provides much tighter upper bounds than the previous methods with a little more computational effort, and the solution obtained often has a much smaller gap with the optimal solution. We also formulate a robust version of the FHSAP and show that it can guard against data uncertainty with little cost
