    Study on properties of Al film on CFRP after cryogenic-thermal cycling

    AbstractAl film on CFRP has been tested by cryogenic-thermal cycling according to the especial condition of space. Properties of aluminum film have been characterized by electron pull apparatus, XRD and SEM. The result shows that the adhesion of Al film increases slowly at early stage of cryogenic-thermal cycling. When the times of cryogenic-thermal cycling exceed 50, the adhesion of Al film becomes stability, and then the adhesion of Al film decrease slowly when cycling times from 100 to 600. After 600 times, the adhesion of Al film becomes stability again. The microcrack appears on the surface of Al film after 50 times, and the amounts of microcrack increase and microcrack is coarsening versus times of cryogenic-thermal cycling.     Optimized detector tomography for photon-number resolving detectors with hundreds of pixels

    Photon-number resolving detectors with hundreds of pixels are now readily available, while the characterization of these detectors using detector tomography is computationally intensive. Here, we present a modified detector tomography model that reduces the number of variables that need optimization. To evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of our model, we reconstruct the photon number distribution of optical coherent and thermal states using the expectation-maximization-entropy algorithm. Our results indicate that the fidelity of the reconstructed states remains above 99%, and the second and third-order correlations agree well with the theoretical values for a mean number of photons up to 100. We also investigate the computational resources required for detector tomography and find out that our approach reduces the solving time by around a half compared to the standard detector tomography approach, and the required memory resources are the main obstacle for detector tomography of a large number of pixels. Our results suggest that detector tomography is viable on a supercomputer with 1~TB RAM for detectors with up to 340 pixels

    A Novel Soluble Tin(IV) Porphyrin Modified Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanohybrid With Light Harvesting Properties

    A dihydroxotin(IV) porphyrin functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) nanohybrid is obtained. Solubility of the nanohybrid in organic solvents is determined by UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy. Electron absorption and fluorescence spectra investigations demonstrate that efficient electron transfer occurs within the nanohybrid at the photoexcited state and the charge-separated state of the nanohybrid is observed by transient absorption spectrum. The results illustrate that this soluble electron donor–acceptor nanohybrid might be a good candidate as a light harvesting material in molecular photoelectronic devices

    Systematic biases in determining dust attenuation curves through galaxy SED fitting

    While the slope of the dust attenuation curve (δ\delta) is found to correlate with effective dust attenuation (AVA_V) as obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, it remains unknown how the fitting degeneracies shape this relation. We examine the degeneracy effects by fitting SEDs of a sample of local star-forming galaxies (SFGs) selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey, in conjunction with mock galaxy SEDs of known attenuation parameters. A well-designed declining starburst star formation history is adopted to generate model SED templates with intrinsic UV slope (β0\beta_0) spanning over a reasonably wide range. The best-fitting β0\beta_0 for our sample SFGs shows a wide coverage, dramatically differing from the limited range of β0<−2.2\beta_0<-2.2 for a starburst of constant star formation. Our results show that strong degeneracies between β0\beta_0, δ\delta, and AVA_V in the SED fitting induce systematic biases leading to a false AVA_V--δ\delta correlation. Our simulation tests reveal that this relationship can be well reproduced even when a flat AVA_V--δ\delta relation is taken to build the input model galaxy SEDs. The variations in best-fitting δ\delta are dominated by the fitting errors. We show that assuming a starburst with constant star formation in SED fitting will result in a steeper attenuation curve, smaller degeneracy errors, and a stronger AVA_V--δ\delta relation. Our findings confirm that the AVA_V--δ\delta relation obtained through SED fitting is likely driven by the systematic biases induced by the fitting degeneracies between β0\beta_0, δ\delta, and AVA_V.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in the MNRAS, Comments welcome

    Molecular monitoring of causative viruses in child acute respiratory infection in endemo-epidemic situations in Shanghai

    International audienceBACKGROUND: Numerous viruses are responsible for respiratory infections; however, both their distribution and genetic diversity, in a limited area and a population subgroup, have been studied only rarely during a sustained period of time. METHODS: A 2-year surveillance program of children presenting with acute respiratory infections (ARIs) was carried out to characterize the viral etiology and to assess whether using gene amplification and sequencing could be a reliable approach to monitor virus introduction and spread in a population subgroup. RESULTS: Using multiplex RT-PCR, 15 different respiratory viruses were detected within the 486 nasopharyngeal positive samples collected among 817 children aged <9-year old who presented with ARI during October 2006 to September 2008. A single virus was detected in 373 patients (45.7%), and two to four viruses in 113 patients (13.8%). The most frequent causative viruses were respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (24.7%), human bocavirus (24.5%), and human rhinovirus (HRV) (15%). RSV was more prevalent in winter and among young infants. Cases of seasonal influenza A and B viruses were reported mainly in January and August. An increase in adenovirus infection was observed during the spring of the second year of the study. Sequence analyses showed multiple introductions of different virus subtypes and identified a high prevalence of the newly defined HRV-C species. A higher viral incidence was observed during the winter of 2008, which was unusually cold. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the usefulness of multiplex RT-PCR for virus detection and co-infection, and for implementation of a molecular monitoring system for endemic and epidemic viral respiratory infections

    Stray dogs as indicators of Toxoplasma gondii distributed in the environment: the first report across an urban-rural gradient in China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Toxoplasmosis is an important parasitic zoonosis caused by the protozoan <it>Toxoplasma gondii </it>that is distributed world-wide and infects a variety of hosts. However, the prevalence of <it>T. gondii </it>in the environment (such as soil, water and food) is largely unknown. Due to the technical difficulty in oocyst counting directly, an alternative assay using the serologic status of <it>T. gondii </it>in free-living animals, such as stray or free-living dogs, as an indicator, can be used to evaluate environmental contamination indirectly, as they are exposed to the same risk of infection as humans and other animals.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the present study, 231 stray or free-living dogs across an urban-rural gradient were examined to assess the frequency of <it>T. gondii </it>in the environment. Specific antibodies to <it>T. gondii </it>were found in 93 dogs (40.3%) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and no statistically significant differences were observed in seroprevalences of <it>T. gondii </it>between urban dogs (38.7%) and rural dogs (41%) (<it>p </it>> 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A high seroprevalence of <it>T. gondii </it>in stray or free-living dogs in the present study indicates that there would be a wide distribution and a constant infection pressure of <it>T. gondii </it>across an urban-rural gradient, and the oocysts of <it>T. gondii </it>in the environment would be an important source of infection for humans and other animals both in urban and rural areas in China.</p

    Prognostic effects of 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in gastric cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Results from large epidemiologic studies on the association between vitamin D and gastric cancer are controversial. Vitamin D significantly promotes apoptosis in the undifferentiated gastric cancer cell, but the prognostic effects of its levels are unknown.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>197 gastric carcinoma patients who received treatment in the cancer centre of Sun Yat-sen University from January 2002 to January 2006 were involved in the study. The stored blood drawn before any treatment was assayed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. The clinicopathologic data were collected to examine the prognostic effects of vitamin D.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mean vitamin D levels of the 197 gastric patients was 49.85 ± 23.68 nmol/L, among whom 114(57.9%) were deficient in Vitamin D(< 50 nmol/L), 67(34%) were insufficient (50-75 nmol/L) and 16(8.1%) were sufficient (> 75 nmol/L). Clinical stage (<it>P </it>= 0.004) and lymph node metastasis classification (<it>P </it>= 0.009) were inversely associated with vitamin D levels. The patients with high vitamin D levels group (≥ 50 nmol/L) had a higher overall survival compared with the low vitamin D levels group (< 50 nmol/L)(<it>P </it>= 0.018). Multivariate analysis indicated that vitamin D levels were an independent prognostic factor of gastric cancer (<it>P </it>= 0.019).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Vitamin D deficiency may be associated with poor prognosis in gastric cancer.</p
