Strong pinning of vortices by antiferromagnetic domain boundaries in CeCo(InCd)
We have studied the isothermal magnetization of
CeCo(InCd) with = 0.0075 and 0.01 down to 50 mK. Pronounced
field-history dependent phenomena occur in the coexistence regime of the
superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases. At low-fields, a phenomenological
model of magnetic-flux entry well explains implying the dominance of
bulk pinning effect. However, unless crystallographic quenched disorder is
hysteretic, the asymmetric peak effect (ASPE) which appears at higher fields
cannot be explained by the pinning of vortices due to material defects. Also
the temperature dependence of the ASPE deviates from the conventional scenario
for the peak effect. Comparison of our thermodynamic phase diagrams with those
from previous neutron scattering and magnetoresistance experiments indicates
that the pinning of vortices takes place at the field-history dependent

Sustainable Conservation of a Difficult Heritage in South Korea: Mapping the Conservation Resources of Sorok-do Island, Hansen’s Disease Site
South Korea’s Sorok-do island bears witness to the 100-year history of the Sorok-do hospital and the village for Hansen’s disease (leprosy) patients. All the facilities of Sorok-do were established by the Japanese imperial authorities, and the collective memories of social isolation and discrimination against Hansen’s disease patients were deeply embedded in this island during the colonial and post-colonial periods. Despite changing perceptions toward the conservation of the island’s history since the 1990s, the island’s deep collective memory remains at risk due to the increasing number of incoming settlers and the shrinking number of Hansen’s disease patients since the opening of the Sorok Bridge in 2009. Taking into consideration the historical lack of critical engagement with difficult heritage conservation in South Korea, this paper introduces a novel approach to sustainable conservation, using as a case study the Sorok-do island. We collected data using archival research, participant observation and semi-structured in-depth interviews, and analyzed them by using a position-mapping method. This paper examines the island’s multifaceted, shifting processes within its history, urban structure, and changing social meanings, and offers a new set of criteria for long-term strategies that will ensure both tangible and intangible types of conservation resources.</jats:p
Metal-organic framework based on hinged cube tessellation as transformable mechanical metamaterial
Mechanical metamaterials exhibit unusual properties, such as negative Poisson???s ratio, which are difficult to achieve in conventional materials. Rational design of mechanical metamaterials at the microscale is becoming popular partly because of the advance in three-dimensional printing technologies. However, incorporating movable building blocks inside solids, thereby enabling us to manipulate mechanical movement at the molecular scale, has been a difficult task. Here, we report a metal-organic framework, self-assembled from a porphyrin linker and a new type of Zn-based secondary building unit, serving as a joint in a hinged cube tessellation. Detailed structural analysis and theoretical calculation show that this material is a mechanical metamaterial exhibiting auxetic behavior. This work demonstrates that the topology of the framework and flexible hinges inside the structure are intimately related to the mechanical properties of the material, providing a guideline for the rational design of mechanically responsive metal-organic frameworks
Transplantation of Adipose Derived Stromal Cells into the Developing Mouse Eye
Adipose derived stromal cells (ADSCs) were transplanted into a developing mouse eye to investigate the influence of a developing host micro environment on integration and differentiation. Green fluorescent protein-expressing ADSCs were transplanted by intraocular injections. The age of the mouse was in the range of 1 to 10 days postnatal (PN). Survival dates ranged from 7 to 28 post transplantation (DPT), at which time immunohistochemistry was performed. The transplanted ADSCs displayed some morphological differentiations in the host eye. Some cells expressed microtubule associated protein 2 (marker for mature neuron), or glial fibrillary acid protein (marker for glial cell). In addition, some cells integrated into the ganglion cell layer. The integration and differentiation of the transplanted ADSCs in the 5 and 10 PN 7 DPT were better than in the host eye the other age ranges. This study was aimed at demonstrating how the age of host micro environment would influence the differentiation and integration of the transplanted ADSCs. However, it was found that the integration and differentiation into the developing retina were very limited when compared with other stem cells, such as murine brain progenitor cell
Absolute Properties of the Oscillating Eclipsing Algol X Trianguli
We report results from the TESS photometric data and new high-resolution
spectra of the Algol system X Tri showing short-period pulsations. From the
echelle spectra, the radial velocities of the eclipsing pair were measured, and
the rotational rate and effective temperature of the primary star were obtained
to be km s and K,
respectively. The synthetic modeling of these observations implies that X Tri
is in synchronous rotation and is physically linked to a visual companion TIC
28391715 at a separation of about 6.5 arcsec. The absolute parameters of our
target star were accurately and directly determined to be , ,
, , ,
and . The phase-binned mean light curve was used
to remove the binary effect from the observed TESS data. Multifrequency
analysis of the residuals revealed 16 significant frequencies, of which the
high-frequency signals between 37 day and 48 day can be
considered probable pulsation modes. Their oscillation periods of 0.0210.027
days and pulsation constants of 0.0140.018 days are typical values of
Sct variables. The overall results demonstrate that X Tri is an oEA
star system, consisting of a Sct primary and its lobe-filling

Simple Use of the Suppository Type Povidone-Iodine Can Prevent Infectious Complications in Transrectal Ultrasound-Guided Prostate Biopsy
Purpose. To determine the effect of simple use of suppository povidone-iodine on infectious complications after transrectal ultrasonography-guided biopsy of the prostate. Methods. All 481 patients are included and received antibiotic prophylaxis. Among them, 360 patients received povidone-iodine suppository (Gynobetadine; 200 mg) immediately prior to biopsy and 121 patients did not. Infectious complications were classified. To evaluate bactericidal effects, we counted bacterial colonies in the rectum, harvested from a rectal swab before insertion of the suppository and after biopsy. Aliquots of the suspended bacterial strains were added to Mueller-Hinton agar medium for incubation. Colony counts were determined. Results. Infectious complications developed in 1 case (0.3%) in the rectal preparation group (Group 1) and in 8 cases (6.6%) in the nonrectal preparation group (Group 2). One in Group 1 had a fever without sepsis. Two patients had sepsis and six had fever without sepsis in Group 2. Rectal preparation was a statistically significant risk factor influencing the development of infectious complications. In vitro experiments, the mean number of colony-forming units decreased 99.9% after the rectal povidone-iodine preparation. Conclusions. All through the biopsy, povidone-iodine melted into the rectum and decreased the bacterial colony count. Simple use of povidone-iodine suppository before prostate biopsy minimizes the risk of infectious complications
