    We develop an iterative method for finding solutions to the hermitian Yang-Mills equation on stable holomorphic vector bundles, following ideas recently developed by Donaldson. As illustrations, we construct numerically the hermitian Einstein metrics on the tangent bundle and a rank three vector bundle on P^2. In addition, we find a hermitian Yang-Mills connection on a stable rank three vector bundle on the Fermat quintic.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figure

    A note on monopole moduli spaces

    We discuss the structure of the framed moduli space of Bogomolny monopoles for arbitrary symmetry breaking and extend the definition of its stratification to the case of arbitrary compact Lie groups. We show that each stratum is a union of submanifolds for which we conjecture that the natural L2L^2 metric is hyperKahler. The dimensions of the strata and of these submanifolds are calculated, and it is found that for the latter, the dimension is always a multiple of four.Comment: 17 pages, LaTe

    At the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site (BHRS), we are characterizing the hydrogeophysical parameters of a cobble-and-sand, unconfined aquifer using a wide variety of geophysical methods. Our goal is to develop methods for mapping variations in permeability by combining non-invasive geophysical data with hydrologic measurements. We are using seismic, ground penetrating radar, and electrical methods in a variety of configurations to provide images of and parameter distributions at the BHRS. Issues such as resolution, depth of penetration, and the ability to image the desired parameters will help determine the most effective methods. Supporting data sets from the BHRS include core analyses and geophysical logs from 18 wells at the site. We will use these data to verify our geophysical interpretations. The various geophysical methods and acquisition geometries, combined with the well control, will provide an outstanding data set to characterize the heterogeneity of the subsurface beneath this alluvial aquifer, and find ways to map permeability with geophysical information

    A 100 kHz time-resolved multiple-probe femtosecond to second infrared absorption spectrometer

    We present a dual-amplifier laser system for time-resolved multiple-probe infrared (IR) spectroscopy based on the ytterbium potassium gadolinium tungstate (Yb:KGW) laser medium. Comparisons are made between the ytterbium-based technology and titanium sapphire laser systems for time-resolved IR spectroscopy measurements. The 100 kHz probing system provides new capability in time-resolved multiple-probe experiments, as more information is obtained from samples in a single experiment through multiple-probing. This method uses the high repetition-rate probe pulses to repeatedly measure spectra at 10 ÎĽs intervals following excitation allowing extended timescales to be measured routinely along with ultrafast data.     Lake Breezes in Southern Ontario and Their Relation to Tornado Climatology

    Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) imagery is used to demonstrate the development of lake-breeze boundaries in southern Ontario under different synoptic conditions. The orientation of the gradient wind with respect to the shorelines is important in determining the location of such lines. When moderate winds (5–10 m s21) are parallel to straight sections of coastlines, cloud lines can extend well inland. In the region between Lakes Huron and Erie lake-breeze lines merge frequently, sometimes resulting in long-lasting stationary storms and attendant heavy rain and flooding. The influence of the lakes is apparent in the tornado climatology for the region: tornadoes appear to be suppressed in regions visited by lake-modified air and enhanced in regions favored by lake-breeze convergence lines. The cloud patterns in the case of a cold front interacting with merging lake-breeze boundaries are shown to be similar to those on a major tornado outbreak day. Two of the cases discussed are used as conceptual models to explain many of the features in the patterns of tornado touchdown locations. In general, it appears that the lakes suppress tornadoes in southern Ontario, compared with neighboring states and in particular in areas where southwest winds are onshore, but enhance tornado likelihood locally in areas of frequent lake-breeze activity. 1

    Numerical Calabi-Yau metrics

    We develop numerical methods for approximating Ricci flat metrics on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in projective spaces. Our approach is based on finding balanced metrics, and builds on recent theoretical work by Donaldson. We illustrate our methods in detail for a one parameter family of quintics.
