    Reflections on eportfolio professional learning: harnessing an unconference approach

    This practitioner-led article documents the journey of a cross-institutional multidisciplinary team to support the development of practitioners’ ePortfolio professional competencies through an “Unconference.” We describe the approach used to support an ePortfolio unconference hosted in January 2018 at Dublin City University. According to Budd et al. (2015), the most meaningful professional learning at conferences tends to occur at the cofee breaks when delegates are free to engage in open dialogue. An unconference is a dynamic participant-driven conference which features discussion and collaboration at its core to support professional learning. This approach was chosen to capture, develop and document current ePortfolio practice in Ireland and the United Kingdom. This article outlines key facets of professional learning generated as a result of the unconference including the promotion of ePortfolio competencies and the generation of collaborative research outputs. At the unconference, attendees participated in experiential learning opportunities which enhanced and extended their personal and professional ePortfolio competencies as well as developed practice-focused research outputs collaboratively in real time using a range of technological tools. Participant feedback highlights the impact of the unconference on their professional ePortfolio learning and practice, and the critical refections of unconference organizers inform future ePortfolio professional development

    Promoting Healthy Lifestyles for Extension Employees: An Exploratory Study

    Employee health is regarded as a strategic advantage with individual, organizational, and societal benefits. This study sought to describe the major health issues, motivations, barriers, and needs related to healthy lifestyles for Cooperative Extension employees. A total of 16 focus groups were conducted throughout Tennessee with 105 participants. Separate focus groups were conducted with seven groups of University of Tennessee Extension employees: administrative assistants, county agents, county directors, program assistants, departmental faculty, administrators, and professional staff. Findings indicate chronic stress as the dominant health issue. Respondents were motivated to stay healthy to be role models for good health, among other reasons. From an organizational standpoint, respondents reported that both an organizational culture that does not prioritize health and their job demands kept them from achieving optimum health. From a personal standpoint, respondents reported that a lack of time for healthy eating and physical activity and their own over-engagement with their work were barriers to health. Employees desired a coordinated, substantial organizational shift toward a culture of wellness that includes an effective employee wellness program. Employees indicated that a culture of wellness would result in employees who represent more balanced lives, thereby setting a better example for those served by Extension

    An Exploratory Study of the Effects of Mind–Body Interventions Targeting Sleep on Salivary Oxytocin Levels in Cancer Survivors

    Cancer survivors experience high levels of distress, associated with a host of negative psychological states, including anxiety, depression, and fear of recurrence, which often lead to sleep problems and reduction in quality of life (QOL) and well-being. As a neuropeptide hormone associated with affiliation, calmness, and well-being, oxytocin may be a useful biological measure of changes in health outcomes in cancer survivors. In this exploratory study, which comprised a subset of participants from a larger study, we evaluated ( a ) the feasibility and reliability of salivary oxytocin (sOT) levels in cancer survivors and ( b ) the effects of 2 sleep-focused mind–body interventions, mind–body bridging (MBB) and mindfulness meditation (MM), compared with a sleep hygiene education (SHE) control, on changes in sOT levels in 30 cancer survivors with self-reported sleep disturbance. Interventions were conducted in 3 sessions, once per week for 3 weeks. Saliva samples were collected at baseline, postintervention (~1 week after the last session), and at the 2-month follow-up. In this cancer survivor group, we found that intra-individual sOT levels were fairly stable across the 3 time points, of about 3 months’ duration, and mean baseline sOT levels did not differ between females and males and were not correlated with age. Correlations between baseline sOT and self-report measures were weak; however, several of these relationships were in the predicted direction, in which sOT levels were negatively associated with sleep problems and depression and positively associated with cancer-related QOL and well-being. Regarding intervention effects on sOT, baseline-subtracted sOT levels were significantly larger at postintervention in the MBB group as compared with those in SHE. In this sample of cancer survivors assessed for sOT, at postintervention, greater reductions in sleep problems were noted for MBB and MM compared with that of SHE, and increases in mindfulness and self-compassion were observed in the MBB group compared with those in SHE. The findings in this exploratory study suggest that sOT may be a reliable biological measure over time that may provide insight into the effects of mind–body interventions on health outcomes in cancer survivors

    Mobility Clinic Team Composition: Optimizing Care for Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury

    INTRODUCTION Specialized interprofessional primary care-based Mobility Clinics represent a significant opportunity to improve spinal cord injury (SCI) care, however, there are no gold standards to inform team composition. This study explored the ideal mix of skill sets and competencies for Mobility Clinics. METHODS Twelve individual interviews were conducted with primary care and rehabilitation clinicians and individuals from professional associations representing nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, physicians, physician assistants, and recreation therapists. Participants received briefing notes on the Mobility Clinic care model and roles of each discipline within this model. Questions were asked related to discipline specific scope of practice, ideal team composition to meet consumer needs, and opportunities for expanding and sharing discipline roles. RESULTS Discipline specific role descriptions within the Mobility Clinic were perceived to be comprehensive and accurate; in some cases additional activities were suggested for some disciplines. Suggestions were made for cross discipline sharing of tasks (e.g., some social worker activities can be assumed by occupational therapists, OT or nurse practitioners, NPs). Recommendations for core team members included a physician, nurse, OT, exercise therapist, and a representative from a SCI-specific community service, with linkages to specialists or interprofessional rehabilitation teams for consultation support. Potential roles were described for disciplines not currently represented in this care model (nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, physician assistants, recreation therapists). CONCLUSION As there exists a critical balance of optimizing care and availability of resources, this study informs appropriate Mobility Clinic team composition, adaptable within the context of existing human resources

    Volunteer Training Needs for Successful 4-H STEM Programs

    Informal STEM education programs through youth-serving organizations like 4-H have the potential to help youth prepare for future STEM careers. Volunteers continue to be an important way to mentor and provide programs for youth with support and guidance from professionals working for youth organizations. 4-H STEM programs present challenges for 4-H professionals and traditional 4-H volunteers who often have limited knowledge and confidence in their ability to teach STEM skills. Recruiting science experts as volunteers to lead 4-H STEM programs is one way to provide these programs, but some experts have limited knowledge about youth development and how to engage youth. Findings from the 4-H Science: Building a 4-H Career Pathway initiative are discussed here related to volunteer training, volunteer recruitment and retention and resources needed for 4-H professionals and volunteers to successfully implement 4‑H STEM programs. A process evaluation was conducted that included focus groups and interviews in 3 states that participated in the initiative. Focus groups and interviews were conducted with youth, parents, volunteers, and 4-H professionals involved in 4-H STEM programs. Themes included the need for volunteer training focused on increasing STEM knowledge and skills as well as pedagogy and youth engagement, the need for training for 4-H professionals related to STEM skills so they could support volunteer efforts, and the need to use diverse methods to recruit science experts and other volunteers for these programs
