Experimental tests of reaction rate theory: Mu+H2 and Mu+D2
Copyright @ 1987 American Institute of Physics.Bimolecular rate constants for the thermal chemical reactions of muonium (Mu) with hydrogen and deuteriumâMu+H2âMuH+H and Mu+D2âMuD+Dâover the temperature range 473â843 K are reported. The Arrhenius parameters and 1Ď uncertainties for the H2 reaction are log A (cm3 molecule-1 s-1)=-9.605Âą0.074 and Ea =13.29Âą0.22 kcal mol-1, while for D2 the values are -9.67Âą0.12 and 14.73Âą0.40, respectively. These results are significantly more precise than those reported earlier by Garner et al. For the Mu reaction with H2 our results are in excellent agreement with the 3D quantum mechanical calculations of Schatz on the LiuâSiegbahnâTruhlarâHorowitz potential surface, but the data for both reactions compare less favorably with variational transition-state theory, particularly at the lower temperatures.NSERC (Canada) and the Petroleum Research Foundation of the Americal Chemical Society
Occupational plans of Iowa farm boys
This bulletin reports the findings of an exploratory study of the long-range occupational plans of Iowa farm boys in their senior year of high school. The primary objectives of the study were: (1) to relate the theory of choice to occupational planning, (2) to describe the occupational plans of the boys, (3) to determine the characteristics which differentiate boys who plan to farm from boys who plan nonfarm careers and (4) to appraise the relative importance of factors influencing farm-nonfarm occupational plans.
Application of the theory of choice to occupational planning resulted in three general hypotheses to explain why some farm boys plan to farm while others plan nonfarm occupations. These hypotheses involved individual differences in (1) occupational satisfaction functions (preference systems), (2) available resources and (3) the results expected from using given resources in farm and nonfarm employments. Various operational hypotheses derived from the general hypotheses were evaluated on the basis of evidence obtained from a state-wide sample of senior farm boys attending Iowa high schools in rural areas and cities under 25,000 population in the spring of 1959
What Careers for Farm Boys?
This is the first of a series of articles reporting the results of a study of the career preferences and plans and choices of farm boys. This article tells of career plans the boys made and of their immediate after high school plans
The Money To Get Started - What Do Farm Boys Expect?
It takes a lot of capital to acquire and to operate an Iowa farm. The study of occupational plans and preferences of Iowa farm boys helps to indicate just how much influence capital needs have on their plans

3-D Model of Broadband Emission from Supernova Remnants Undergoing Non-linear Diffusive Shock Acceleration
We present a 3-dimensional model of supernova remnants (SNRs) where the
hydrodynamical evolution of the remnant is modeled consistently with nonlinear
diffusive shock acceleration occuring at the outer blast wave. The model
includes particle escape and diffusion outside of the forward shock, and
particle interactions with arbitrary distributions of external ambient
material, such as molecular clouds. We include synchrotron emission and
cooling, bremsstrahlung radiation, neutral pion production, inverse-Compton
(IC), and Coulomb energy-loss. Boardband spectra have been calculated for
typical parameters including dense regions of gas external to a 1000 year old
SNR. In this paper, we describe the details of our model but do not attempt a
detailed fit to any specific remnant. We also do not include magnetic field
amplification (MFA), even though this effect may be important in some young
remnants. In this first presentation of the model we don't attempt a detailed
fit to any specific remnant. Our aim is to develop a flexible platform, which
can be generalized to include effects such as MFA, and which can be easily
adapted to various SNR environments, including Type Ia SNRs, which explode in a
constant density medium, and Type II SNRs, which explode in a pre-supernova
wind. When applied to a specific SNR, our model will predict cosmic-ray spectra
and multi-wavelength morphology in projected images for instruments with
varying spatial and spectral resolutions. We show examples of these spectra and
images and emphasize the importance of measurements in the hard X-ray, GeV, and
TeV gamma-ray bands for investigating key ingredients in the acceleration
mechanism, and for deducing whether or not TeV emission is produced by IC from
electrons or neutral pions from protons.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted by Apj, 24 June 200
Density-functional calculation of ionization energies of current-carrying atomic states
Current-density-functional theory is used to calculate ionization energies of
current-carrying atomic states. A perturbative approximation to full
current-density-functional theory is implemented for the first time, and found
to be numerically feasible. Different parametrizations for the
current-dependence of the density functional are critically compared. Orbital
currents in open-shell atoms turn out to produce a small shift in the
ionization energies. We find that modern density functionals have reached an
accuracy at which small current-related terms appearing in open-shell
configurations are not negligible anymore compared to the remaining difference
to experiment.Comment: 7 pages, 2 tables, accepted by Phys. Rev.
