Crisis and the Emotional Body: Towards (Another) Freedom

    Get PDF
In his analysis of the recent European crisis, Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi (2012) looks beyond its economic causes and implications and theorises the role played by poetry and the emotional body in rediscovering the relationship between language and desire and reopening the possibility of social solidarity. Drawing on Félix Guattari’s (1995) reflections on the correlation between singular refrain and universal chaos in the reinvention of subjectivity, Berardi conceptualises rhythm as a poetic feature which can contribute to restoring our ability to conjoin with other singularities and with our social and cosmic environment. This article considers how a close engagement with rhythmical, repetitive and cyclical performative practices in examples of recent European choreography may offer ways of responding to today’s crisis of social cohesion, reimagining channels of intensive communication. In particular, the article looks at works by the Italian artist Alessandro Sciarroni (Folk-s, will you still love me tomorrow?, 2012 and Chroma_don’t be frightened of turning the page, 2017) and by the London-based duo Igor and Moreno (Idiot-Syncrasy, 2013) and discusses how, in revisiting elements of folk traditions, they mobilise their potential as formal, semantic and affective modalities that can sustain a reconfiguration of social freedom

Verification of Global Assimilation of Ionospheric Measurements Gauss Markov (GAIM-GM) Model Forecast Accuracy

    Get PDF
GAIM-GM is an operational Kalman filter data assimilation model of the ionosphere that can assimilate data from GPS total electron content (TEC), ionosonde electron density profiles, and satellite based in situ electron densities. The Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA) uses GAIM-GM to specify and forecast the ionosphere. An in depth investigation into the accuracy of these forecasts has not been completed. GAIM-GM output obtained from four cases run from combinations of geomagnetic and solar activity was used to determine GAIM-GM forecast accuracy. Forecast accuracy was determined through the use of a skill score as well as other statistical tools to include root mean square error (RMSE) and percent differences between the forecasts and the observations. It is determined that overall, GAIM-GM forecast output is more representative than the climatological reference 90% of the time indicating that GAIM-GM can therefore forecast short term fluctuations in the ionosphere. The RMSE increases during daytime, geomagnetic storming and during solar maximum. Skill scores decrease at night and GAIM-GM shows an overall diurnal bias to under forecast at night and over forecast during the day

Clinical Reasoning to Advance Medication Safety by Senior Nursing Students

    Get PDF
Nursing students in their final year of their nursing education program are expected to administer medications to patients safely and competently. Currently, there is a lack of research with regard to how senior nursing students are using clinical reasoning to support medication safety in the clinical setting. This qualitative descriptive case study explored how senior nursing students applied critical thinking and clinical reasoning to support medication safety in their final clinical practicums. The study took place in 2019 and consisted of 13 face-to-face interviews with senior nursing students in their final clinical rotation. Six themes emerged from the interviews. Students described (1) administering medications safely by recognizing and clustering cues, (2) administering medications safely to the right patient in the context of care, (3) administering medications safely by determining the correct action, (4) administering medications safely to patients for the right reason, (5) reflecting on clinical reasoning experiences that supported medication safety, and (6) unit culture impact clinical reasoning about medication safety. Nursing students described how they used their clinical reasoning to support safe medication management and administration in clinical settings. Based on the findings from this study, we recommend that nursing education programs enhance opportunities for students to develop and reflect on their clinical reasoning about safe medication administration in clinical settings.

Evaluating Preceptor Perception of Role Development and Support Initiatives in a Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

Background: Nurse preceptors fulfill a vital role in the success of preceptorship experiences during clinical education of nursing students in their final year of study. Literature does not provide insight on preceptors’ perceptions about whether they feel supported in their knowledge about how to guide undergraduate nursing students in complex clinical learning environments. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore Saskatchewan preceptors’ perceptions of their role preparation/development and support, and make recommendations to enhance preceptors’ support to ensure quality learning for preceptored nursing students. Methods: The sample comprised of registered nurses who were current or past preceptors for fourth year undergraduate students. A cross sectional study design was used. Data were gathered through Qualtrics® survey and analyzed to identify statistically significant differences in sub-scales score by demographic subgroups. Results: Significant differences were found between preceptors aged 60 years and older and those aged 30-39 years or 40-49 years on the preparation subscale. In both cases those in \u3e 60 years subgroup scored higher with medium effect sizes. In regard to the years of practice, those with 10-19 years’ experience score higher than those with 5-9 years and 20-29 years, again with medium effect sizes. Conclusion and Recommendations: Gaining understanding of preceptors’ perspectives of what they need to fulfill their role as preceptors is integral to preceptor satisfaction. Enhancing preceptor satisfaction can increase recruitment and retention of preceptors for the future. Additional faculty training and support are needed to ensure faculty and preceptors have a better understanding of their roles. There is need for further development of preceptor manuals to include relevant material for specific clinical areas, a review of evaluation documents, and increased support for younger and least experienced preceptors.

Public support for European integration in eight member states: a battle for the hearts as well as the minds of Europe's citizens

Defence date: 22 November 2002Examining Board: Prof. Richard Breen, FBA, MRIA (Supervisor); Prof. Anthony Heath, FBA; Prof. Michael Keating, European University Institute; Prof. Richard Sinnot, University College DublinFirst made available online on 16 April 2018In this thesis the author aims to make a contribution to our understanding o f mass attitudes towards European integration. The initial theoretical backdrop is the field of regional integration, where mass attitudes are generally specified to play a minimal role in integrative developments. I criticise this viewpoint, and in particular the Permissive Consensus approach of Lindberg and Scheingold (1970), from an empirical and theoretical stance, arguing instead that public support for European integration is capable o f fulfilling an important legitimising function. Amongst other researchers that view public opinion as worthy of study, the consensus is that mass support for integration is largely a function o f utilitarian calculations. My starting points are the large, unexplained differences in support by country that remain in many utilitarian studies. I hypothesise that explanations o f mass support for integration are complemented by the inclusion o f variables that account for so-called ‘affective* attitudes. Specifically, I construct variables measuring national pride, European identity, nationalism and racism for European Union respondents surveyed in the International Social Survey Programme 1995 National Identity dataset. Here, as elsewhere in the thesis, I use commonly applied social sciences methodologies to test my hypotheses both at aggregate and country level. Essentially, I show that higher levels of pride and European identity are positively related to support, while nationalism and racism are negatively related. A second empirical section to the thesis addresses how the four affective concepts interrelate with one another in the data. Although I do not formulate specific hypotheses in this case, I am, however, informed by the socio-psychological literature concerning social identity. In a final empirical section, I use Eurobarometer data to attempt an explanation o f non-attitudes towards European integration, shown to be ubiquitous in both surveys. Here, the explanatory focus is on education, knowledge and interest in politics rather than affective variables
