âThe Island of Thievesâ: Rethinking Empire and the United States in Micronesia
This piece examines empire by purchase and lease in the Pacific and the manner by which the United States gained control over a series of strategically valuable islands in the region. Because Washington obtained its possessions partly through purchase and lease, and not via invasion, it argues that the United States can hide its standing as an empire. Therefore, this research suggests that the literature on empire, order, and hierarchy in international relations needs to allow for a more expansive definition of empire to better understand this important but understudied concept

Elderly Onset of Weakness in Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy
A 77-year-old male is presented. He had onset of proximal weakness 10 years earlier. His course was slowly progressive. Despite having phenotypic features of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSH), genetic testing for this was delayed because of his age of onset, lack of family history, and benign appearing muscle biopsy. This case is one of the oldest onset of weakness in genetically confirmed FSH and highlights the recognized expansion in phenotype that has occurred since the advent of genetic testing
Lower bounds for communication capacities of two-qudit unitary operations
We show that entangling capacities based on the Jamiolkowski isomorphism may
be used to place lower bounds on the communication capacities of arbitrary
bipartite unitaries. Therefore, for these definitions, the relations which have
been previously shown for two-qubit unitaries also hold for arbitrary
dimensions. These results are closely related to the theory of the
entanglement-assisted capacity of channels. We also present more general
methods for producing ensembles for communication from initial states for
entanglement creation.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, comments welcom
Using a virtue ethics lens to develop a socially accountable community placement programme for medical students
Background: Community-based education (CBE) involves educating the head (cognitive), heart (affective), and the hand (practical) by utilizing tools that enable us to broaden and interrogate our value systems. This article reports on the use of virtue ethics (VE) theory for understanding the principles that create, maintain and sustain a socially accountable community placement programme for undergraduate medical students. Our research questions driving this secondary analysis were; what are the goods which are internal to the successful practice of CBE in medicine, and what are the virtues that are likely to promote and sustain them?
Methods: We conducted a secondary theoretically informed thematic analysis of the primary data based on MacIntyreâs virtue ethics theory as the conceptual framework.
Results: Virtue ethics is an ethical approach that emphasizes the role of character and virtue in shaping moral behavior; when individuals engage in practices (such as CBE), goods internal to those practices (such as a collaborative attitude) strengthen the practices themselves, but also augment those individualsâ virtues, and that of their community (such as empathy). We identified several goods that are internal to the practice of CBE and accompanying virtues as important for the development, implementation and sustainability of a socially accountable community placement programme. A service-oriented mind-set, a deep understanding of community needs, a transformed mind, and a collaborative approach emerged as goods internal to the practice of a socially accountable CBE. The virtues needed to sustain the identified internal goods included empathy and compassion, connectedness, accountability, engagement [sustained relationship], cooperation, perseverance, and willingness to be an agent of change.
Conclusion: This study found that MacIntyreâs virtue ethics theory provided a useful theoretical lens for
understanding the principles that create, maintain and sustain CBE practice
Spinocerebellar Ataxia 7: A Report of Unaffected Siblings Who Married into Different SCA 7 Families
Two families with spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 are presented. Although there are affected cousins, it is not the sibling parents that transmitted the mutation. It is assumed that the affected families share a common ancestor
Dysregulated GPCR Signaling and Therapeutic Options in Uveal Melanoma.
Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignant tumor in adults and arises from the transformation of melanocytes in the uveal tract. Even after treatment of the primary tumor, up to 50% of patients succumb to metastatic disease. The liver is the predominant organ of metastasis. There is an important need to provide effective treatment options for advanced stage uveal melanoma. To provide the preclinical basis for new treatments, it is important to understand the molecular underpinnings of the disease. Recent genomic studies have shown that mutations within components of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling are early events associated with approximately 98% of uveal melanomas
