    Researching Cultural Objects and Manuscripts in a Small Country: The Finnish Experience of Raising Awareness of Art Crime

    In this article we shed light on the position of Finland in conversations on the movement of unprovenanced cultural objects, within the national, the Nordic and the global contexts. Finland's geopolitical position, as a hard border of the European Union neighbouring the Russian Federation, and its current legislative provisions, which do not include import regulations, mean that it has the potential to be significant in understanding the movement of cultural property at transnational levels. In particular, we outline a recent initiative started at the University of Helsinki to kick-start a national debate on ethical working with cultural objects and manuscripts. We analyse exploratory research on current awareness and opinion within Finland, and summarize our current work to produce robust research ethics to guide scholars working in Finland. Although Finland has a small population and is usually absent from international discussions on the illicit movement of cultural property (save a few exceptions), we argue that it is still possibleand importantfor scholars and others in Finland to affect policy and attitudes concerning art crime, provenance, and the role of stakeholders such as decision-makers, traders and the academy

    Strategies to Improve Post-procedural Safe Patient Handoffs

    STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE SAFE PATIENT HANDOFFS AND POST PROCEDURAL FLOW During patient transfers from one care unit to another, it is imperative for patient safety and satisfaction that timely and complete communication between staff occurs. In an academic tertiary care medical center, a team consisting of representatives from 6 patient care units used improvement methods of operational excellence to improve patient centered movement. The goal of this project was to improve the percentages of two questions related to information sharing on the FY2018 AHRQ Culture of Patient Safety Survey. Using baseline metrics to reflect the current state of patient wait times and performing a detailed root cause analysis, resulted in the establishment of several countermeasures. Through problem statement development, current state mapping, and fishbone diagramming six joint KPIs were developed for post Kaizen implementation and sustainment. Next steps include reviewing results of the 2018 Culture of Safety Survey, using champions of this work to coach other teams on joint KPI development and implementation and hardwiring ideal state map tool utilizing multiple waves of joint KPIs between 2-3 departments

    A global sampling approach to designing and reengineering RNA secondary structures

    The development of algorithms for designing artificial RNA sequences that fold into specific secondary structures has many potential biomedical and synthetic biology applications. To date, this problem remains computationally difficult, and current strategies to address it resort to heuristics and stochastic search techniques. The most popular methods consist of two steps: First a random seed sequence is generated; next, this seed is progressively modified (i.e. mutated) to adopt the desired folding properties. Although computationally inexpensive, this approach raises several questions such as (i) the influence of the seed; and (ii) the efficiency of single-path directed searches that may be affected by energy barriers in the mutational landscape. In this article, we present RNA-ensign, a novel paradigm for RNA design. Instead of taking a progressive adaptive walk driven by local search criteria, we use an efficient global sampling algorithm to examine large regions of the mutational landscape under structural and thermodynamical constraints until a solution is found. When considering the influence of the seeds and the target secondary structures, our results show that, compared to single-path directed searches, our approach is more robust, succeeds more often and generates more thermodynamically stable sequences.
