    The principal at risk: Stress and organizing mindfulness in the school context

    Background: In recent years the role of school principals is becoming increasingly complex and responsible. Methods: This study was voluntarily attended by 419 Italian school principals who were administered the Psychological Stress Measurement (MSP), Mindfulness Organizing Scale (MOS), Polychronic-Monochronic Tendency Scale (PMTS), and the Scale of Emotions at Work (SEW). Results: The study has produced a path analysis model in which the relationships between the main predictors of principals’ work discomfort were explained. The effect of depressive anxiety on perceived discomfort (ß = 0.517) found a protective mediator in the mindfulness component that recognizes the sharing as a fundamental operational tool (ß = −0.206), while an increasing sense of effort and confusion could significantly amplify the experience of psychological discomfort associated with the exercise of school leadership (ß = 0.254). Conclusions: The model developed in this study suggests that focusing on organizing mindfulness can be a valuable guideline for interventions

    Influence of Cognitive Orientation and Attentional Focus on Pain Perception

    Background. Recently, a growing interest has emerged in the role of attention and hypervigilance in the experience of pain. Shifting attention away from pain seems likely to reduce the perception of pain itself. Objectives. The present study has been designed to test the following overall hypotheses: (1) disposition to catastrophize, self-efficacy perceived in pain resistance (task self-efficacy), previous experiences concerning the tolerance of physical pain, and degree of impulsiveness are significant predictors of the decision to abandon a painful test such as the cold pressor test (CPT); (2) the manipulation of the attentive focus (internal or external) can influence the level of perceived pain. Methods. Effects of the manipulation of attentional focus (internal and external) on pain perception and response of trial abandonment were evaluated in a sample of university students (n = 246) subjected to the cold pressor test. Results. A significant effect (p < 0.05) was found through a test–retest comparison on the final level of perceived pain among subjects who had received instruction to externalize the focus of their attention (mixed factorial analysis of variance), but no significance was observed with respect to the decision to abandon the experiment. A general explanatory model of the abandonment behavior demonstrating overall good fit measurements was tested too. Conclusion. The abandonment of tests has been shown to be predicted mainly by catastrophic attitude. Attentive impulsiveness showed a further positive effect on catastrophic attitude. Perceived self-efficacy in the tolerance of pain limited learned helplessness, which in turn positively influenced catastrophizing

    Biomarker phenotyping drives clinical management in axillary sentinel node: A retrospective study on women with primary breast cancer in 2002

    The current study examined if cancer biomarker phenotyping could predict the clinical/pathological status of axillary nodes in women with primary breast cancer. Primary breast cancers from 2002 were analyzed for tumor size, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PgR), Ki.67MIB expression and Her2/neu amplification. Relationships between the clinical and pathological status of the axilla and the biological subtypes classification were analyzed using univariate, multivariate and regression tree analysis. A total of 65% of women with axillary nodes clinically involved had complete axillary node dissection (ALND) while 705 women with clinically negative axillary underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), 18.5% of the latter had at least one pathologically SLNB involved node. Multivariate analysis revealed that the Luminal A subtype was significantly associated (OR 0.62; P&lt;10-9) with clinical negative axilla while HER2pos/not Luminal was associated with clinical positivity (OR 1.71; P&lt;0.01). No significant association between biological subtypes and SLNB status was demonstrated. Regression tree analysis revealed that subgroups with significantly different probability of SLNB status were separated according to tumor size and PgR values. In conclusion, the current study demonstrated that biomarker breast cancer phenotyping is significantly associated with clinical status of axillary nodes but not with pathological involvement of nodes at SLNB. Regression tree analysis could represent a valid attempt to individualize some patients subgroups candidate to different surgical axilla approaches

    Adolescents’ Characteristics and Peer Relationships in Class: A Population Study

    Abstract: Background: This study aimed to investigate differences in adolescents’ social relationships with classmates of diverse gender, socioeconomic status, immigrant background, and academic achievement. Methods: A population of 10th-grade students (N = 406,783; males = 50.3%; Mage = 15.57 years, SDage = 0.75) completed the Classmates Social Isolation Questionnaire (CSIQ), an instrument specifically designed to measure two distinct but correlated types of peer relationships in class: peer acceptance and peer friendship. To obtain reliable comparisons across diverse adolescent characteristics, the measurement invariance of the CSIQ was established by means of CFAs and then latent mean differences tests were performed. Results: Immigrant background, academic achievement, and socioeconomic status all proved to be important factors influencing relationships with classmates, while being a male or a female was less relevant. Being a first-generation immigrant adolescent appears to be the foremost risk factor for being less accepted by classmates, while having a low academic achievement is the greatest hindrance for having friends in the group of classmates, a finding that diverges from previous studies. Conclusions: This population study suggests that adolescent characteristics (especially immigrant background, socioeconomic status, and academic achievement) seem to affect social relationships with classmates
