    Ground-water resources data of Charlotte, DeSoto, and Hardee Counties, Florida

    Charlotte, De Soto, and Hardee counties are east-southeast of Tampa in west-central peninsular Florida, figure 1. In order to plan the future water-resource development of the area, information about the water resources is needed. To meet this need, the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Peace River Basin Board of the Southwest Florida Water Management District as part of the statewide cooperative program with the Division of Geology, Florida Board of Conservation, began a continuing hydrologic data collection program in July, 1963, as an initial step in the investigation and evaluation of the groundwater resources of Hardee and De Soto counties. A similar hydrologic data program commenced in Charlotte County in July, 1964. Previous work in Hardee and De Soto counties included a one year reconnaissance by the Division of Water Resources and Conservation, Florida Board of Conservation, which concluded in June, 1963, and resulted in a hydrologic report (Woodard, 1964). As an outgrowth of the hydrologic data program, a Map Series report portraying the chemical character of water in the Floridan aquifer in the southern Peace River basin was prepared in 1967 (Kaufman and Dion). The data contained herein constitute the basis for the Map Series report. Additional selected data, including records of wells and chemical analyses,, on the ground-water resources of the three county area are also included and are published to make the data available.     On the Mechanism of Townsend Avalanche for Negative Molecular Ions

    Time projection chambers drifting negative ions (NITPC) instead of electrons have several advantages. A NITPC can operate at very high reduced drift fields without diffusion runaway, and the readout digitization sampling rate requirement is considerably relaxed due to the low drift speed of negative ions. The initiation of Townsend avalanches to allow gas gain in these devices has not been understood until now. It is shown here that the avalanche in low pressure CS2_2 vapor is most likely initiated by collisional detachment of the electron from the negative molecular ion. In mixtures of Nitromethane vapor with CO2_2 the mechanism appears to be more complex

    Simulations of Sisyphus cooling including multiple excited states

    We extend the theory for laser cooling in a near-resonant optical lattice to include multiple excited hyperfine states. Simulations are performed treating the external degrees of freedom of the atom, i.e., position and momentum, classically, while the internal atomic states are treated quantum mechanically, allowing for arbitrary superpositions. Whereas theoretical treatments including only a single excited hyperfine state predict that the temperature should be a function of lattice depth only, except close to resonance, experiments have shown that the minimum temperature achieved depends also on the detuning from resonance of the lattice light.     Optimally Controlled Field-Free Orientation of the Kicked Molecule

    Efficient and long-lived field-free molecular orientation is achieved using only two kicks appropriately delayed in time. The understanding of the mechanism rests upon a molecular target state providing the best efficiency versus persistence compromise. An optimal control scheme is referred to for fixing the free parameters (amplitudes and the time delay between them).     Explicit approximate controllability of the Schr\"odinger equation with a polarizability term

    We consider a controlled Schr\"odinger equation with a dipolar and a polarizability term, used when the dipolar approximation is not valid. The control is the amplitude of the external electric field, it acts non linearly on the state. We extend in this infinite dimensional framework previous techniques used by Coron, Grigoriu, Lefter and Turinici for stabilization in finite dimension. We consider a highly oscillating control and prove the semi-global weak H2H^2 stabilization of the averaged system using a Lyapunov function introduced by Nersesyan. Then it is proved that the solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation and of the averaged equation stay close on every finite time horizon provided that the control is oscillating enough. Combining these two results, we get approximate controllability to the ground state for the polarizability system

    A benign, low Z electron capture agent for negative ion TPCs

    We have identified nitromethane (CH3_3NO2_2) as an effective electron capture agent for negative ion TPCs (NITPCs). We present drift velocity and longitudinal diffusion measurements for negative ion gas mixtures using nitromethane as the capture agent. Not only is nitromethane substantially more benign than the only other identified capture agent, CS2_2, but its low atomic number will enable the use of the NITPC as a photoelectric X{}-ray polarimeter in the 1{}-10 keV band

This paper researches and analyzes object-oriented languages, relational database and dynamic report generation technologies for the PDA as they apply to the development of a professional home inspection application. The focus of this paper is on the implementation of the most advanced PDA technologies for a high-end database PDA application design

    Hydrologic Modeling of Navasota River Subchannel Inundation

    Anastomosing rivers are multichannel systems characterized by a definitive main channel and semi-permanent sub-channels that intertwine with the main channel in their planform. This semi-permanence of the sub-channels is largely associated with flows that have been recognized to be fed by overbank flows from the main channel. The Navasota river on the coastal plain of Texas is an anastomosing river with ephemeral anabranches dependent on main channel over bank flow. This study determines the river stage at which the main channel becomes laterally connected to anabranching channels by surface water. The chosen study site on the Navasota is located at Democrat Crossing road that is downstream of U.S. Geological Survey gaging station 08110800 at Democrat Crossing road.. The purpose of this work is tomonitorthe interactions of fourdownstream anabranches within a .5-kmradius. Lateral connections between the main channel and sub-channels are determined using a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model that was developed using a LiDAR-based digital terrain model and calibrated/validated using acoustic and topographic surveys conducted in the field. Preliminary analysis suggests there are 3 stages of connection, (1) exclusively the main channel, (2) lower level anabranch connections, and (3) upper level anabranch. The riverine landscape of the Navasota River shelters high levels of ecological diversity and surface water connections within a river reach can impact the overall health and evolution of these riverine ecosystem. This project provides a case study to promote knowledge of the flow dynamics of anastomosing geomorphology and water resource management applications within and upstream of the study site to help mitigate flooding hazards and help manage the riverine ecosystem
