Interaction Quench in Nonequilibrium Luttinger Liquids

We study the relaxation dynamics of a nonequilibrium Luttinger liquid after a sudden interaction switch-on ("quench"), focussing on a double-step initial momentum distribution function. In the framework of the non-equilibrium bosonization, the results are obtained in terms of singular Fredholm determinants that are evaluated numerically and whose asymptotics are found analytically. While the quasi-particle weights decay exponentially with time after the quench, this is not a relaxation into a thermal state, in view of the integrability of the model. The steady-state distribution emerging at infinite times retains two edges which support Luttinger-liquid-like power-law singularities smeared by dephasing. The obtained critical exponents and the dephasing length are found to depend on the initial nonequilibrium state.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

Some general features of the phonon damping model are presented. It is concluded that the fits performed within this model have no physical content

Damping of giant dipole resonance in hot rotating nuclei

The phonon damping model (PDM) is extended to include the effect of angular momentum at finite temperature. The model is applied to the study of damping of giant dipole resonance (GDR) in hot and noncollectively rotating spherical nuclei. The numerical results obtained for Mo88 and Sn106 show that the GDR width increases with both temperature T and angular momentum M. At T > 4 MeV and M<= 60 hbar the increase in the GDR width slows down for Sn106, whereas at M<= 80 hbar the GDR widths in both nuclei nearly saturate. By adopting the nuclear shear viscosity extracted from fission data at T= 0, it is shown that the maximal value of the angular momentum for Mo88 and Sn106 should be around 46 and 55 hbar, respectively, so that the universal conjecture for the lower bound of the specific shear viscosity for all fluids is not violated up to T= 5 MeV.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted in Phys. This is the Post-Print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 ACMOlfaction, or smell, is one of the last challenges which multimedia applications have to conquer. As far as computerized smell is concerned, there are several difficulties to overcome, particularly those associated with the ambient nature of smell. In this article, we present results from an empirical study exploring users' perception of olfaction-enhanced multimedia displays. Findings show that olfaction significantly adds to the user multimedia experience. Moreover, use of olfaction leads to an increased sense of reality and relevance. Our results also show that users are tolerant of the interference and distortion effects caused by olfactory effect in multimedia

Tunneling into Nonequilibrium Luttinger Liquid with Impurity

We evaluate tunneling rates into/from a voltage biased quantum wire containing weak backscattering defect. Interacting electrons in such a wire form a true nonequilibrium state of the Luttinger liquid (LL). This state is created due to inelastic electron backscattering leading to the emission of nonequilibrium plasmons with typical frequency ωU\hbar \omega \leq U. The tunneling rates are split into two edges. The tunneling exponent at the Fermi edge is positive and equals that of the equilibrium LL, while the exponent at the side edge EFUE_F-U is negative if Coulomb interaction is not too strong.Comment: 4+ pages, 5 figure

User quality of experience of mulsemedia applications

    Get PDF
User Quality of Experience (QoE) is of fundamental importance in multimedia applications and has been extensively studied for decades. However, user QoE in the context of the emerging multiple-sensorial media (mulsemedia) services, which involve different media components than the traditional multimedia applications, have not been comprehensively studied. This article presents the results of subjective tests which have investigated user perception of mulsemedia content. In particular, the impact of intensity of certain mulsemedia components including haptic and airflow on user-perceived experience are studied. Results demonstrate that by making use of mulsemedia the overall user enjoyment levels increased by up to 77%

A New Combination Method Based on Adaptive Genetic Algorithm for Medical Image Retrieval

    Get PDF
Medical image retrieval could be based on the text describing the image as the caption or the title. The use of text terms to retrieve images have several disadvantages such as term-disambiguation. Recent studies prove that representing text into semantic units (concepts) can improve the semantic representation of textual information. However, the use of conceptual representation has other problems as the miss or erroneous semantic relation between two concepts. Other studies show that combining textual and conceptual text representations leads to better accuracy. Popularly, a score for textual representation and a score for conceptual representation are computed and then a combination function is used to have one score. Although the existing of many combination methods of two scores, we propose in this paper a new combination method based on adaptive version of the genetic algorithm. Experiments are carried out on Medical Information Retrieval Task of the ImageCLEF 2009 and 2010. The results confirm that the combination of both textual and conceptual scores allows best accuracy. In addition, our approach outperforms the other combination methods
