    A resistive sensor array is presented for two dimensional temperature distribution measurements in a micromachined flow channel. This allows simultaneous measurement of flow velocity and fluid parameters, like thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient and viscosity. More general advantages of measuring temperature distributions are the inherent compensation of heat losses to the support and the insensitivity to variations in the temperature coefficient of resistance

    Fabrication of microcantilever-based IO grated waveguide sensors for detection of nano-displacements

    We propose a novel and highly sensitive integrated read-out scheme, capable of detecting sub-nanometre deflections of a cantilever in close proximity to a grated waveguide structure. A very compact and stable sensor element can be realized by monolithically integrating a microcantilever structure with the grated waveguide (GWG), using conventional layer deposition and sacrificial layer etching techniques. The platform integrating a high quality GWG and a low initial bending cantilever has been fabricated and characterized

    Formation of porous membranes for drug delivery systems

    Highly crystalline porous hollow poly (-lactide) (PLLA) fibres suitable for the delivery of various drugs were obtained using a dry-wet spinning process. The pore structure of the fibres could be regulated by changing the spinning systems and spinning conditions. Using the spinning system PLLA-dioxane-water, fibres with a dense toplayer and a spongy sublayer were obtained. The spinning system PLLA-chloroform/toluene-methanol yielded fibres with a very open porous structure. The membrane formation of the former system probably occurs by liquid-liquid demixing followed by crystallization of the polymer rich phase. In the membrane formation process of the spinning system, PLLA-chloroform/toluene-methanol crystallization probably plays a dominant role. The membrane formation process will be related to basic principles of phase separation. The fibres are suitable for the long term zero order delivery of the contraceptive 3-ketodesogestrel and the short term zero order delivery of the cytostatic agent, cisplatin. The drugs are released by dissolution of the drug crystals in the fibre core followed by diffusion through the membrane structure. Short term release of adriamycin could be obtained through an adsorption-desorption mechanism. The pore structures of the fibres have a large influence on the release rates of the drugs investigated. When fibres with dense toplayers were used, low release rates of drugs were observed whereas fibres with well interconnected pore structures over the fibre wall showed very high release rates

    MEMS based hair flow-sensors as model systems for acoustic perception studies

    Arrays of MEMS fabricated flow sensors inspired by the acoustic flow-sensitive hairs found on the cerci of crickets, have been designed, fabricated and characterized. The hairs consist of up to 1 mm long SU-8 structures mounted on suspended membranes with normal translational and rotational degrees of freedom. Electrodes on the membrane and on the substrate form variable capacitors allowing for capacitive read-out. Capacitance versus voltage, frequency dependency and directional sensitivity measurements have been successfully carried out on fabricated sensor arrays, showing the viability of the concept.     In vivo and in vitro degradation of glycine/DL-lactic acid copolymers

    A series of copolymers of glycine and DL-lactic acid with various compositions was synthesized and their in vivo and in vitro degradation behavior was studied. For the in vivo examination, discs of the copolymer films were subcutaneously implanted in rats. The in vitro studies were carried out in phosphate buffer at pH = 7.4 and 37°C. The decrease in molecular weight, the loss of weight, and the tissue reactions of the different copolymers were determined after 2, 5, and 10 weeks. Poly(DL-lactic acid) was used as reference material. The in vivo and in vitro degradation behavior of the polymers was comparable. The decrease of molecular weight of the copolymers and poly(DL-lactic acid) in time was similar. The weight loss for copolymers with a higher mole fraction of glycine units started earlier. The copolymer with the highest content of glycine units disappeared completely within 10 weeks both in vivo and in vitro. The poly(DL-lactic acid) implant lost only 25% weight over the same period. Tissue reactions against all materials started with an acute inflammatory reaction caused by the trauma of implantation, followed by wound-healing processes, ending in a very mild foreign body reaction for the poly(DL-lactic acid) and a more excessive macrophage mediated foreign body reaction for the glycine/DL-lactic acid copolymers. The tissue reaction was more severe for polymers having a higher rate of degradation

    How body balance influences political party evaluations: A wii balance board study

    Embodied cognition research has shown how actions or body positions may affect cognitive processes, such as autobiographical memory retrieval or judgments. The present study examined the role of body balance (to the left or the right) in participants on their attributions to political parties. Participants thought they stood upright on aWii™ Balance Board, while they were actually slightly tilted to the left or the right. Participants then ascribed fairly general political statements to one of 10 political parties that are represented in the Dutch House of Representatives. Results showed a significant interaction of congruent leaning direction with left-or right-wing party attribution. When the same analyses were performed with the political parties being divided into affiliations to the right, center, and left based on participants' personal opinions rather than a ruling classification, no effects were found. The study provides evidence that conceptual metaphors are activated by manipulating body balance implicitly. Moreover, people's judgments may be colored by seemingly trivial circumstances such as standing slightly out of balance

    Bridging Sustainable Development Goals and Land Administration: The Role of the ISO 19152 Land Administration Domain Model in SDG Indicator Formalization

    This study illustrates the linkages between the ISO’s Land Administration Domain Model (LADM) and the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs), highlighting the role of the LADM in promoting effective land administration suitable for efficient computation of land/water (space)-related SDG indicators. The main contribution of this study is the formalization of SDG indicators by using the ISO standard LADM. This paper proposes several SDG-indicator-related extensions to the multi-part LADM standard that is currently under revision. These extensions encompass the introduction of new procedures for calculating indicators, the integration of blueprints for external classes to fulfil additional information needs and the design of interface classes for presenting indicator values across specific countries and reporting years. In an innovative approach, this paper introduces the Four-Step Method—a powerful framework designed to formalize SDG indicators within the LADM framework. Detailed attention is devoted to specific indicators, including 1.4.2 (secure land rights), 5.a.1 (women’s agricultural land rights), 14.5.1 (protected marine areas) and 11.5.2 (valuation as a basis for direct economic loss). In short, the Four-Step Method is pivotal in eliminating ambiguities, enhancing the efficiency of indicator computation and securing more accurate indicator values that more truly reflect the progress towards SDG realization. This approach is also expected to work with other (ISO) standards for other SDG indicators

    Distributed Path Computation without Transient Loops: An Intermediate Variables Approach

    Paths with loops, even transient ones, pose significant stability problems in networks. As a result, much effort has been devoted over the past thirty years to designing distributed algorithms capable of avoiding loops. We present a new algorithm, Distributed path computation with Intermediate Variables (DIV), that guarantees that no loops, transient or steady-state, can ever form. DIV’s novelty is in that it is not restricted to shortest paths, can easily handle arbitrary sequences of changes and updates, and provably outperforms earlier approaches in several key metrics. In addition, when used with distance-vector style path computation algorithms, DIV also prevents counting-to-infinity; hence further improving convergence. The paper introduces DIV and its key properties. Simulation quantifying its performance gains are also presented

    Mechanical tuning of optical race-track ring resonators

    This paper presents the fabrication and mechanical characterization of electrostatically actuated micro bimorphs integrated with race-track ring resonators, for optical tuning applications. The bimorphs, having an upward deflection in the off-state, are integrated by surface micromachining techniques with race-track ring resonators fabricated on Silicon On Insulator (SOI) wafers. Using electrostatic actuation, these bimorphs are pulled into the evanescent field of the ring resonator thereby modulating the propagation properties. Pull-in voltages of the bimorphs have been measured statically and the effect of electrostatic spring softening (ESS) on the resonance frequency has been measured dynamically. The resonance wavelength of the optical ring resonator could be tuned by 50 pm by applying an 8.5 V DC voltage to a 40 μm long bimorph, bringing it into close proximity of the ring resonator waveguide. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of tuning of race track ring resonators by integrated, electrostatically actuated bimorphs.\ud \u

    Density functional theory and demixing of binary hard rod-polymer mixtures

    A density functional theory for a mixture of hard rods and polymers modeled as chains built of hard tangent spheres is proposed by combining the functional due to Yu and Wu for the polymer mixtures [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 117}, 2368 (2002)] with the Schmidt's functional [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 63}, 50201 (2001)] for rod-sphere mixtures. As a simple application of the functional, the demixing transition into polymer-rich and rod-rich phases is examined. When the chain length increases, the phase boundary broadens and the critical packing fraction decreases. The shift of the critical point of a demixing transition is most noticeable for short chains.Comment: 4 pages,2 figures, in press, PR
