The structure of the QED-Vacuum and Electron-Positron Pair Production in Super-Intense, pulsed Laser Fields

We discuss electron-positron pair-production by super-intense, short laser pulses off the physical vacuum state locally deformed by (stripped) nuclei with large nuclear charges. Consequences of non-perturbative vacuum polarisation resulting from such a deformation are shortly broached. Production probabilities per pulse are calculated.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Journal of Physics

Histological investigations on the thyroid glands of marine mammals (Phoca vitulina, Phocoena phocoena) and the possible implications of marine pollution

In 1988 and 1989, thousands of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) died in the North Sea from phocine distemper infection. The morphology of thyroid glands from 40 harbor seals found dead on the North Sea coastlines of Schleswig-Holstein, Federal Republic of Germany, during an epizootic of phocine distemper, was compared with the morphology of thyroid glands from five healthy harbor seals collected in Iceland. Thyroid glands from seven harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) found dead in 1990 on the North Sea coastlines also were evaluated. Colloid depletion and fibrosis were found in the thyroid glands of harbor seals which died during the epizootic, but not in animals from Iceland. Thyroid glands of the porpoises showed similar lesions, but to a lesser degree, than those observed in the North Sea seals

An Update on Models of Neutrino Masses and Mixings

    Get PDF
At the School I gave three lectures on neutrino masses and mixings. Much of the material covered in my first two lectures is written down in a review on the subject that I published not long ago with F. Feruglio \cite{rev}. Here, I make a relatively short summary (with updates) of the content of my first two lectures, referring to our review for a more detailed presentation, and then I expand on the content of the third lecture which was dedicated to recent work on A4 models of tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing which were not covered in the review.Comment: Lectures given at IPM-LHP06, Tehran, Iran; PSN: IPM-LHP06-sch. 14 pages, 1 figure Typos corrected, one reference adde
