Low-Temperature Phase Transitions in a Soluble Oligoacene and Their Effect on Device Performance and Stability
The use of organic semiconductors in high-performance organic field-effect transistors requires a thorough understanding of the effects that processing conditions, thermal, and bias-stress history have on device operation. Here, we evaluate the temperature dependence of the electrical properties of transistors fabricated with 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl)anthradithiophene, a material that has attracted much attention recently due to its exceptional electrical properties. We have discovered a phase transition at T = 205 K and discuss its implications on device performance and stability. We examined the impact of this low-temperature phase transition on the thermodynamic, electrical, and structural properties of both single crystals and thin films of this material. Our results show that while the changes to the crystal structure are reversible, the induced thermal stress yields irreversible degradation of the devices
Charges and fluxes in Maxwell theory on compact manifolds with boundary
We investigate the charges and fluxes that can occur in higher-order Abelian
gauge theories defined on compact space-time manifolds with boundary. The
boundary is necessary to supply a destination to the electric lines of force
emanating from brane sources, thus allowing non-zero net electric charges, but
it also introduces new types of electric and magnetic flux. The resulting
structure of currents, charges, and fluxes is studied and expressed in the
language of relative homology and de Rham cohomology and the corresponding
abelian groups. These can be organised in terms of a pair of exact sequences
related by the Poincar\'e-Lefschetz isomorphism and by a weaker flip symmetry
exchanging the ends of the sequences. It is shown how all this structure is
brought into play by the imposition of the appropriately generalised Maxwell's
equations. The requirement that these equations be integrable restricts the
world-volume of a permitted brane (assumed closed) to be homologous to a cycle
on the boundary of space-time. All electric charges and magnetic fluxes are
quantised and satisfy the Dirac quantisation condition. But through some
boundary cycles there may be unquantised electric fluxes associated with
quantised magnetic fluxes and so dyonic in nature.Comment: 28 pages, plain Te
Optimal trapping wavelengths of Cs molecules in an optical lattice
The present paper aims at finding optimal parameters for trapping of Cs
molecules in optical lattices, with the perspective of creating a quantum
degenerate gas of ground-state molecules. We have calculated dynamic
polarizabilities of Cs molecules subject to an oscillating electric field,
using accurate potential curves and electronic transition dipole moments. We
show that for some particular wavelengths of the optical lattice, called "magic
wavelengths", the polarizability of the ground-state molecules is equal to the
one of a Feshbach molecule. As the creation of the sample of ground-state
molecules relies on an adiabatic population transfer from weakly-bound
molecules created on a Feshbach resonance, such a coincidence ensures that both
the initial and final states are favorably trapped by the lattice light,
allowing optimized transfer in agreement with the experimental observation
Dynamical Boson Stars
The idea of stable, localized bundles of energy has strong appeal as a model
for particles. In the 1950s John Wheeler envisioned such bundles as smooth
configurations of electromagnetic energy that he called {\em geons}, but none
were found. Instead, particle-like solutions were found in the late 1960s with
the addition of a scalar field, and these were given the name {\em boson
stars}. Since then, boson stars find use in a wide variety of models as sources
of dark matter, as black hole mimickers, in simple models of binary systems,
and as a tool in finding black holes in higher dimensions with only a single
killing vector. We discuss important varieties of boson stars, their dynamic

Freezing-in orientational disorder induces crossover from thermally-activated to temperature-independent transport in organic semiconductors
The crystalline structure of organic materials dictates their physical properties, but while significant research effort is geared towards understanding structure-property relationships in such materials, the details remain unclear. Many organic crystals exhibit transitions in their electrical properties as a function of temperature. One example is the 1:1 charge-transfer complex trans--stilbene-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane. Here we show that the mobility and resistivity of this material undergo a transition from being thermally activated at temperatures above 235 K to being temperature independent at low temperatures. On the basis of our experimental and theoretical results, we attribute this behaviour to the presence of a glass-like transition and the accompanied freezing-in of orientational disorder of the stilbene molecule
Attitudes towards complementary and alternative medicine in chronic pain syndromes: a questionnaire-based comparison between primary headache and low back pain
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is widely used and popular among patients with primary headache or low back pain (LBP). Aim of the study was to analyze attitudes of headache and LBP patients towards the use of CAM.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two questionnaire-based surveys were applied comparing 432 primary headache and 194 LBP patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In total, 84.75% of all patients reported use of CAM; with significantly more LBP patients. The most frequently-used CAM therapies in headache were acupuncture (71.4%), massages (56.4%), and thermotherapy (29.2%), in LBP thermotherapy (77.4%), massages (62.7%), and acupuncture (51.4%). The most frequent attitudes towards CAM use in headache vs. LBP: "leave nothing undone" (62.5% vs. 52.1%; p = 0.006), "take action against the disease" (56.8% vs. 43.2%; p = 0.006). Nearly all patients with previous experience with CAM currently use CAM in both conditions (93.6% in headache; 100% in LBP). However, the majority of the patients had no previous experience.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Understanding motivations for CAM treatment is important, because attitudes derive from wishes for non-pharmacological treatment, to be more involved in treatment and avoid side effects. Despite higher age and more permanent pain in LBP, both groups show high use of CAM with only little specific difference in preferred methods and attitudes towards CAM use. This may reflect deficits and unfulfilled goals in conventional treatment. Maybe CAM can decrease the gap between patients' expectations about pain therapy and treatment reality, considering that both conditions are often chronic diseases, causing high burdens for daily life.</p
High Frequency of Chronic Bacterial and Non-Inflammatory Prostatitis in Infertile Patients with Prostatitis Syndrome Plus Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Although prostatitis syndrome (PS) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are common disorders, information on the prevalence of IBS in infertile patients with PS is relatively scanty. Therefore, this study was undertaken to estimate the frequency of PS and IBS and to evaluate the prevalence of the various diagnostic categories of prostatitis.This study enrolled 152 patients with PS, diagnosed by the NIH-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) in an andrological setting, and 204 patients with IBS, diagnosed according to the Rome III diagnostic criteria in a gastroenterological setting. The patients with PS were asked to fulfill the Rome III questionnaire for IBS, whereas patients with IBS were asked to complete the NIH-CPSI. The simultaneous presence of PS and IBS was observed in 30.2% and 31.8% of the patients screened by andrologists and gastroenterologists, respectively. Altogether, 111 patients had PS plus IBS (31.2%). They had a total NIH-CPSI and pain subscale scores significantly higher than patients with PS alone. Gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with PS plus IBS were similar to those reported by patients with IBS alone and significantly greater in patients with PS alone. Patients with PS plus IBS had a significantly higher frequency of chronic bacterial prostatitis (category II) and lower of non-inflammatory prostatitis (category IIIB), compared to patients with PS alone. The frequency of inflammatory prostatitis (category IIIA) resulted similar.Prostatitis syndromes and IBS are frequently associated in patients with PS- or IBS-related symptoms. These patients have an increased prevalence of chronic bacterial and non-inflammatory prostatitis
