Technology enhanced learning in 21st century mass higher education. Aspects of design, practice and strategy for a necessary step change
Modern day mass higher education presents challenges for both learners and teachers. Whilst digital resources, Web 2.0 technologies and online connectivity can add significantly to the learning opportunities of 21st century students, many cross programme Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) provisions remain collections of somewhat disconnected and basic materials. In its early development, organised e-learning has generally been the province of specialist programmes and individuals championing the new technologies. However along with the adoption of technology enhanced learning, there is a growing need to develop, design and embed more fundamental and far reaching strategic approaches that embrace the core of traditional university learning and teaching programmes. This paper focuses upon a large undergraduate core module and discusses the implications of a practice based case study which explored how traditional campus based undergraduate learning and teaching could be redesigned and enhanced by the addition of online technology and e-pedagogy. It considers aspects of both pedagogical and technological design and examines how a VLE can support learners and teaching teams. Findings showed that students were extremely positive about the mix of onsite and online learning. They saw anytime, anywhere access as fundamental, and valued the flexible access and collaborative opportunities offered by Web 2.0 and mobile resources. Considerable operational benefits arose in supporting teaching teams and student marks increased. Drawing upon lessons learned from practice, and feedback gained from students and teachers, the paper examines how the approach may inform future curriculum delivery and programme specification. It considers the contribution that blended learning may make in addressing the needs of 21st century learners in mass higher education, and reflects on the implications of the case study in terms of aspects of design, practice and strategy
Classification of flying bats using computer vision techniques
We are developing computer vision techniques to automatically monitor bat populations, and extract biometric features which will
be used to gather important population data. The biometric features will include shape, speed, trajectory features, and wing beat
frequency. We will then use classifiers built using Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Neural Networks, to classify bats into
species type, male, female, pregnant and young by tracking individual bats in 2D and 3D in low-light using standard cameras
The Department for environment, food and rural affairs (DEFRA) in association with the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) started a
national bat monitoring programme in 1996. Questions that their surveys seek to answer include: Which species are affected by
habitat changes? What are bats’ hibernation habits? And how many bats at roosting site are females/males, young, pregnant etc.?
Bat populations also roost in buildings, including historic buildings such as churches. This habitation often leads to damage to
building fabric and sensitive artefacts. Data about these populations enables the effective management and protection of the
buildings they inhabit, and we anticipate that our work will be useful not only to conservationist studying bats, but also to building
managers and professional ecologists surveying these buildings
Visual stimulation of saccades in magnetically tethered Drosophila
Flying fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster, perform `body saccades', in which they change heading by about 90° in roughly 70 ms. In free flight, visual expansion can evoke saccades, and saccade-like turns are triggered by similar stimuli in tethered flies. However, because the fictive turns in rigidly tethered flies follow a much longer time course, the extent to which these two behaviors share a common neural basis is unknown. A key difference between tethered and free flight conditions is the presence of additional sensory cues in the latter, which might serve to modify the time course of the saccade motor program. To study the role of sensory feedback in saccades, we have developed a new preparation in which a fly is tethered to a fine steel pin that is aligned within a vertically oriented magnetic field, allowing it to rotate freely around its yaw axis. In this experimental paradigm, flies perform rapid turns averaging 35° in 80 ms, similar to the kinematics of free flight saccades. Our results indicate that tethered and free flight saccades share a common neural basis, but that the lack of appropriate feedback signals distorts the behavior performed by rigidly fixed flies. Using our new paradigm, we also investigated the features of visual stimuli that elicit saccades. Our data suggest that saccades are triggered when expanding objects reach a critical threshold size, but that their timing depends little on the precise time course of expansion. These results are consistent with expansion detection circuits studied in other insects, but do not exclude other models based on the integration of local movement detectors
Representation of transport: A Rural Destination Analysis
Moscovici’s social representations perspective is applied to a study of transport in a
rural destination. The principles are demonstrated using empirical data from a questionnaire
survey, developed following in-depth qualitative research. The data analysis strategy was
founded on inductive reasoning, by employing cluster analysis and correspondence analysis.
A social representations analysis demonstrates how individuals draw on socially accepted
explanations of transport where they have little or no direct knowledge or experience of
the actual transport modes (notably the alternatives to the car). By so doing, ideas are further
perpetuated. Importantly there is ambiguity surrounding responsibility to take positive action
yet a key to addressing transport issues is acknowledgement of responsibility. Keywords: social
