The constrained modified KP hierarchy and the generalized Miura transformations
In this letter, we consider the second Hamiltonian structure of the
constrained modified KP hierarchy. After mapping the Lax operator to a pure
differential operator the second structure becomes the sum of the second and
the third Gelfand-Dickey brackets defined by this differential operator. We
simplify this Hamiltonian structure by factorizing the Lax operator into linear

Soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation
We study a general class of line-soliton solutions of the
Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation by investigating the Wronskian form
of its tau-function. We show that, in addition to previously known line-soliton
solutions, this class also contains a large variety of new multi-soliton
solutions, many of which exhibit nontrivial spatial interaction patterns. We
also show that, in general, such solutions consist of unequal numbers of
incoming and outgoing line solitons. From the asymptotic analysis of the
tau-function, we explicitly characterize the incoming and outgoing
line-solitons of this class of solutions. We illustrate these results by

On the B\"acklund Transformation for the Moyal Korteweg-de Vries Hierarchy
We study the B\"acklund symmetry for the Moyal Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)
hierarchy based on the Kuperschmidt-Wilson Theorem associated with second
Gelfand-Dickey structure with respect to the Moyal bracket, which generalizes

A High Galactic Latitude HI 21cm-line Absorption Survey using the GMRT: I. Observations and Spectra
We have used the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to measure the
Galactic HI 21-cm line absorption towards 102 extragalactic radio continuum
sources, located at high (|b| >15deg.) Galactic latitudes. The Declination
coverage of the present survey is Decl. ~ -45deg.. With a mean rms optical
depth of ~0.003, this is the most sensitive Galactic HI 21-cm line absorption
survey to date. To supplement the absorption data, we have extracted the HI
21-cm line emission profiles towards these 102 lines of sight from the Leiden
Dwingeloo Survey of Galactic neutral hydrogen. We have carried out a Gaussian
fitting analysis to identify the discrete absorption and emission components in
these profiles. In this paper, we present the spectra and the components. A

The magnetic field of the Large Magellanic Cloud revealed through Faraday rotation
We have measured the Faraday rotation toward a large sample of polarized
radio sources behind the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), to determine the
structure of this galaxy's magnetic field. The magnetic field of the LMC
consists of a coherent axisymmetric spiral of field strength ~1 microgauss.
Strong fluctuations in the magnetic field are also seen, on small (<0.5
parsecs) and large (~100 parsecs) scales. The significant bursts of recent star
formation and supernova activity in the LMC argue against standard dynamo
theory, adding to the growing evidence for rapid field amplification in

Dispersionful analogues of Benney's equations and -wave systems
We recall Krichever's construction of additional flows to Benney's hierarchy,
attached to poles at finite distance of the Lax operator. Then we construct a
``dispersionful'' analogue of this hierarchy, in which the role of poles at
finite distance is played by Miura fields. We connect this hierarchy with
-wave systems, and prove several facts about the latter (Lax representation,
Chern-Simons-type Lagrangian, connection with Liouville equation,

Extended matrix Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies: reduction to classical Lie algebras
The Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction method has been used to associate with
extensions of the matrix r-KdV system. Reductions of these systems to the fixed
point sets of involutive Poisson maps, implementing reduction of to
classical Lie algebras of type , are here presented. Modifications
corresponding, in the first place to factorisation of the Lax operator, and
then to Wakimoto realisations of the current algebra components of the

An integrable dispersionless KdV hierarchy with sources (dKdVHWS) is derived.
Lax pair equations and bi-Hamiltonian formulation for dKdVHWS are formulated.
Hodograph solution for the dispersionless KdV equation with sources (dKdVWS) is
obtained via hodograph transformation. Furthermore, the dispersionless

Detection of OH absorption against PSR B1849+00
We have searched for OH absorption against seven pulsars using the Arecibo
telescope. In both OH mainlines (at 1665 and 1667 MHz), deep and narrow
absorption features were detected toward PSR B1849+00. In addition, we have
detected several absorption and emission features against B33.6+0.1, a nearby
supernova remnant (SNR). The most interesting result of this study is that a
pencil-sharp absorption sample against the PSR differs greatly from the
large-angle absorption sample observed against the SNR. If both the PSR and the
SNR probe the same molecular cloud then this finding has important implications
for absorption studies of the molecular medium, as it shows that the statistics
of absorbing OH depends on the size of the background source. We also show that
the OH absorption against the PSR most likely originates from a small (<30
arcsec) and dense (>10^5 cm^-3) molecular clump.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
Determination of Galaxy Spin Vectors in the Pisces-Perseus Supercluster with the Arecibo Telescope
We use HI observations made with the upgraded Arecibo 305M Telescope in
August 1998 to obtain accurate spin vector determinations for 54 nearly edge-on
galaxies in the Minnesota Automated Plate Scanner Pisces-Perseus Survey
(MAPS-PP). We introduce a simple observational technique of determining the
sense of rotation for galaxies, even when their HI disks are not fully
resolved. We examined the spin vector distribution of these 54 galaxies for
evidence of preferential galaxy alignments. We use the Kuiper statistic, a
variant of the Kolmogorov--Smirnov statistic, to determine the significance of
any anisotropies in the distribution of galaxy spin vectors. The possibility of
``spin vector domains'' is also investigated. We find no significant evidence
of preferential galaxy alignments in this sample. However, we show tha t the
