    Get PDF
Watersheds are complex, dynamic and nested ecological systems that span across multiple jurisdictions. The complexity of watershed pollution requires adaptive and responsive strategies that incorporate government intervention along with community stakeholder engagement. This study explores the motivational determinants that drive local cross-sector watershed collaboration. Cross-sector collaboration offers local watershed stakeholders a holistic approach to address community watershed issues. These collaborative partnerships involve the voluntary engagement of member organizations from different industry sectors directing resources and working together to address local watershed issues of mutual interest. This research explores the social processes and the motivations that drive organizations in different industry sectors to engage in local watershed collaboration. Drawn from the motivational and interorganizational relationships literature, a conceptual framework is created to guide the investigation of the study. A single case study research design is utilized to answer the research questions. Data sources included: (1) interviews, (2) official government and organizational web sites and various media sources, and (3) field observations and memos. A total of twenty-nine organizations participated in the study. The composition of the organizations included 10 private sector organizations, 10 public sector organizations and 9 nonprofit sector organizations. Interviews were conducted with representatives from each of the member organizations that collaborate with Lynnhaven River Now. All of the organizations in the study are located within the boundaries of the Lynnhaven River watershed. The results of the study identify ten motivational determinants that drive local cross-sector watershed collaboration. These motivational determinants include asymmetry, catalytic actors, corporate/social consciousness, efficiency, instability, legitimacy, necessity, organizational interests, reciprocity, and stability. In addition, the results of the study identify variations in the level of prevalence in the motivations of organizations from the public, private and nonprofit sectors that collaborate with LRN. Finally, the results from the study identify three types of organizational motivation orientations in local cross-sector watershed collaboration: (1) transactional, (2) philanthropic and (3) symbiotic. Empirical evidence suggests that determinants in local cross-sector watershed collaboration are likely driven by the organizational motivational orientations of an organization

Indexación: Web of Science; Scielo.Novel bimetallic Au/Ag superstructures have been prepared from solid-state pyrolysis of the macromolecular complexes Chitosan(MLn/M'Ln)n y PSP-4-PVPx( MLn/M'Ln)n with MLn = AuCl3 and M'Ln = Ag(CF3SO3)The characterization was made from XRD (X-ray diffraction of powder), SEM and EDS analysis. Morphologies are influenced by both the nature of the polymer and the metal/polymer, molar ratio of the polymer precursor. EDS analysis suggests a core/shell Au/Ag structure for the materials. A probable mechanism of the formation of these superstructures is discussed. Although separated reports of metallic superstructures of Au or Ag have been recently described, the here reported are the first bimetallic Au/Ag. The atmospheric emissions in Spain: A regional analysis

    Get PDF
The gas emissions to the atmosphere are one the main and more actual environmental problems in the world. The effects of greenhouse gas emissions have been studied and treated recently in the Climate Change Conference in Kyoto. In the approved Kyoto Protocol, the European Union would reduce emissions by 8%, the United States by 7%, and Japan by 6%. The data for each country are used to implement policies and to make global decisions regarding the level of emissions allowed in the future. For this reason, a study more in depth about the origin and level of emissions from a regional perspective become necessary, due to the implications on the regional development. In this paper we will provide detailed information regarding atmospheric emissions in Spanish regions. Moreover, we will show that in many cases the atmospheric emissions are not directly related to the economic situation of each region. For this reason, environmental policies should pay attention to the regional differences within a country.

Anti-Gauss cubature rules with applications to Fredholm integral equations on the square

The purpose of this paper is to develop the anti-Gauss cubature rule for approximating integrals defined on the square whose integrand function may have algebraic singularities at the boundaries. An application of such a rule to the numerical solution of second-kind Fredholm integral equations is also explored. The stability, convergence, and conditioning of the proposed Nystr\"om-type method are studied. The numerical solution of the resulting dense linear system is also investigated and several numerical tests are presented

Natural resistance to infectious diseases is linked to the efficiency of the immune response and is under genetic control. The Solute Carrier Family 11 Member A1 (SLC11A1) gene encodes an integral membrane protein regulating the activity of macrophages. The SLC11A1 protein has 12 transmembrane domains (TM1-TM12), several phosphorylation sites and three functional domains. SLC11A1 gene is associated with resistance to infectious desease. In cattle, a polymorphic GT repeat, located in 3'UTR region of SLC11A1, has been associated with natural resistance to brucellosis, the GT13 allele has been associated with resistance to brucellosis, while GT14 and GT15 have been associated with susceptibility. In this study, we investigated the exon 15 of the gene and the genetic variability of the 3'UTR microsatellite in six dairy goat breeds. A total of 427 registered pedigree goats from 41 farms on the island of Sardinia, Italy, were selected. A blood sample was taken from each goat for DNA genotyping. SSCP was used to screen for polymorphisms in exons 15 of the caprine SLC11A1 gene. Variability was due to the presence of two polymorphic microsatellites. Genotyping of the upstream (GTn) repeat at 3'UTR revealed eight alleles (GT11, G12, G14-GT19) in goats, whereas GT13 was absent. Most goats carried the GT16 allele and no allele was found to be exclusive to only one breed. This microsatellite appears to be an informative DNA marker for genetic linkage analysis in goats

Tesi
