International Trade v. Intellectual Property Lawyers:Globalization and the Brazilian Legal Profession
In the context of globalization, this work analyzes a distinctive characteristic of the Brazilian legal profession. Namely, intellectual property (IP) lawyers, who played important roles in opening the Brazilian economy and who were key players in cross-border transactions, are now losing ground to their peers with respect to expertise in international trade. The thesis of this article is that the manner in which Brazilian lawyers are being educated is problematic. Generally, Brazilian legal education has become degraded and provincial. Yet, Brazilian international trade lawyers, unlike Brazilian IP lawyers, have overcome their deficient legal training by seeking legal education abroad. By traveling overseas, especially to the United States, international trade lawyers are exposed to an education and a set of best practices that stress not just domestic law from one or another country, but laws from different jurisdictions. International trade lawyers in Brazil are now âglobal lawyers,â which enables them to deal more effectively with their countryâs expanding economy, and it supports the argument that globalization matters for both todayâs law students and the legal profession
International Trade v. International Property Lawyers: Globalization and the Brazilian Legal Profession
This work analyzes a distinctive characteristic of the globalizing Brazilian legal profession. Namely, intellectual property (IP) lawyers who once were leaders in opening the Brazilian economy and were key players in cross-border transactions are now losing ground to their peers with an expertise in international trade. The thesis of this article is that the manner in which Brazilian lawyers are being educated is in shambles. Generally speaking, Brazilian legal education has, overall, become degraded and provincial. Yet, Brazilian international trade lawyers, unlike Brazilian IP-lawyers, have overcome their deficient legal training by seeking legal education abroad. By traveling overseas, especially to the United States, international trade lawyers are exposed to an education and a set of best practices that stress not just domestic, Brazilian law, but laws from different jurisdictions. That international trade lawyers in Brazil are now âglobal lawyers,â enables them to deal more effectively with their countryâs expanding economy, and it supports the argument that globalization matters for both todayâs law students and the legal profession
Efficiency tests in the Iberian stock markets
This paper investigates the efficiency of the two major stock indexes of the Iberian Peninsula, the Portuguese Stock Index (PSI-20) and the Spanish Stock Index (IBEX-35). We used daily data from January 1993 to September 2001 for the Portuguese stock index and daily data from October 1990 to September 2001 for the Spanish stock index. Serial correlations, unit root tests and variance ratio tests are used to test the efficiency of these two stock indexes. Although the complementary of these tests, we used all of them to get a higher robustness of the conclusions. We examined serial correlation coefficients for successive stock index changes to test whether they are statistically equal to zero to establish the random walk nature of stock indexes. The augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test are used to test the null hypothesis that the series has a unit root and the variance ratio tests are used to examine the random walk hypothesis for the series of these two stock indexes. The results of the serial correlations, unit root tests and variance ratio tests provide ambiguous evidence for the random walk hypothesis. The empirical evidence from the unit root tests do not reject the efficient market hypothesis for the two stock indexes, while the results from the variance ratio tests and serial correlations do.stock indexes, market efficiency, unit roots
An analysis of the performance of the differential evolution method in solving the economic dispatch problem with valve point effects
One of the problems found in the area of Electrical Engineering is the problem of economic dispatch (PDE), which aims to reduce the total cost of energy by calculating the generation of each unit linked to the grid. Therefore, the purpose is to generate energy with the lowest possible fuel cost, meeting demand (consumers) and respecting all the restrictions of the generation system. A variant of the PDE is the PDE with valve loading point (PDE-PCV). This is formulated as a restricted, non-convex and non-differentiable optimization problem, and it is not possible to solve it with deterministic methods directly. Therefore, it is proposed in this work, to analyze the performance of the heuristic method Differential Evolution (DE) for the resolution of the PDE-PCV. A computer program was developed in Matlab software and tests with the PDE-PCV associated with electrical systems with 3, 13 and 40 generators were performed

Constraints on and facilitators of young peopleâs participation: The case of border regions of mainland Portugal
Highlights:
Young people are involved in diverse types of participation, being engaged, disengaged or unpolitical.
Young people perceive opportunities to organise initiatives but not to participate in local decisions.
Constraints on participation and responses to promote it were identified.
Context-specific barriers were mentioned by young people and policymakers.
Municipalities and schools are priority contexts for fostering youth participation.
Purpose: This article aims to assess constraints on and facilitators of youth participation in rural border regions. Knowledge about regional participation of young people is useful for developing territorialised policies.
Methodology: Using a mixed method approach designed in line with theories of civic and political participation and youth studies, we analysed responses from young people to a questionnaire (n = 3968) and interviews with policymakers (n = 36) and young people (n = 20).
Findings: Young people are involved in diverse types of civic and political participation and perceive more opportunities to organise initiatives than to participate in local decision-making. Constraints on participation relate to the distance between politics, governance institutions and young people, weak strategies of municipalities, lack of youth organisations and mobility. Facilitators of participation include supporting youth-led activities or involving young people in local decisions.
Research implications: the study contributes to understanding youth participation in rural regions
COVID-19 and thromboinflammation : is there a role for statins?
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) showed increased morbidity and mortality rates and worse prognosis in individuals with underlying chronic diseases, especially cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. There is also evidence of possible links among COVID-19, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Emerging evidence suggests a pro-inflammatory milieu and hypercoagulable state in patients with this infection. Despite anticoagulation, a large proportion of patients requiring intensive care may develop life-threatening thrombotic complications. Indeed, the levels of some markers of hemostatic activation, such as D-dimer, are commonly elevated in COVID-19, indicating potential risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism. In this review, we critically examine and discuss aspects of hypercoagulability and inflammation in COVID-19 and the possible benefits of statins in this scenario, with emphasis on their underlying molecular mechanisms. Moreover, we present recommendations on the use of antiviral drugs in combination with statins

Gamification in stroke rehabilitation
Stroke rehabilitation aims to improve patientsâ abilities to realize daily life activities and, consequently, regain their self-confidence and improve independence and quality of life. Gamification can be defined as the application of game-design elements, dynamics, and principles such as competition, narratives, point-scoring, and awards in non-game contexts, including rehabilitation. It has emerged as a therapeutic alternative or complement to traditional rehabilitation to make motor practice more intense and increase a personâs motivation, interest, and satisfaction by bringing meaningful and intrinsically motivational playful experiences. Compared to the same amount of conventional therapy, gamification can increase the number of movements and involve safe and intensive rehabilitation exercises, essential for a successful rehabilitation process.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Overexpression of the mitochondrial MT-sHSP23.6 gene during antioxidant activity in tomato cv. Micro-Tom subjected to flooding
Plants grown under flooding stress conditions form reactive oxygen species, both during oxygen deficiency and after reoxygenation. The tolerance of plants under these conditions depends on an efficient antioxidant system, which may be influenced by the higher expression of heat shock proteins, such as mitochondrial MT-sHSP23.6. The objective of the present study was to determine whether the overexpression of this gene increases the antioxidant activity in tomato cv. Micro-Tom plants subjected to flooding during the vegetative stage of four fully expanded leaves. The experiment was performed with three genotypes of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum Mill. cv. Micro-Tom), one non-transformed denominated âWTâ and two modified for high and low expression of the MT-sHSP23.6 gene, subjected to normal irrigation conditions, 72 hours of flooding, and 24 and 192 hours of recovery after the removal of flooding, consisting a 3x4 split-plot factorial design with four replications. Plants were collected at the vegetative stage of 4 fully expanded leaves to determine superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and catalase activities, hydrogen peroxide accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Overexpression of the mitochondrial MT-sHSP23.6 gene in the evaluated plants resulted in higher antioxidant system activity. However, it did not necessarily lead to less damage caused by oxidative stress. Low expression of this gene resulted in lower antioxidant system activity and greater damage caused by reactive oxygen species
