Time dependent transformations in deformation quantization
We study the action of time dependent canonical and coordinate
transformations in phase space quantum mechanics. We extend the covariant
formulation of the theory by providing a formalism that is fully invariant
under both standard and time dependent coordinate transformations. This result
considerably enlarges the set of possible phase space representations of
quantum mechanics and makes it possible to construct a causal representation
for the distributional sector of Wigner quantum mechanics.Comment: 16 pages, to appear in the J. Math. Phy
On the Evaluation of the Mechanical Behaviour of Structural Glass Elements
Glass can be considered to be a high-technology engineering material with a
multifunctional potential for structural applications. However, the conventional approach to the use
of glass is often based only on its properties of transparency and isolation. It is thus highly
appropriate and necessary to study the mechanical behaviour of this material and to develop
adequate methods and models leading to its characterisation. It is evident that the great potential of
growth for structural glass applications is an important opportunity of development for the glass
industry and the building/construction sectors. The work presented in this paper is a reflection of
this conclusion. The authors shortly present the state-of-the-art on the application of glass as a
structural element in building and construction, and refer to other potential fields of application and
available glass materials. The experimental procedures and methods adopted in three-point bending
tests performed on 500 × 100 [mm2] float, laminated and tempered glass specimens with
thicknesses between 4 and 19 mm are thoroughly described. The authors evaluated the mechanical
strength and stiffness of glass for structural applications. This work contributes to a deeper
knowledge of the properties of this material
The matching method for treatment evaluation with selective participation and inelligibles
The matching method for treatment evaluation does not balance selective unobserved differences between treated and non-treated. We derive a simple correction term if there is an instrument that shifts the treatment probability to zero in specific cases. Policies with eligibility restrictions,
where treatment is impossible if some variable exceeds a certain value, provide a natural application. In an empirical analysis, we first examine the performance of matching versus regression-discontinuity estimation in the
sharp age-discontinuity design of the NDYP job search assistance program for young unemployed in the UK. Next, we exploit the age eligibility restriction in the Swedish Youth Practice subsidized work program for young unemployed, where compliance is imperfect among the young. Adjusting
the matching estimator for selectivity changes the results towards ineffectiveness of subsidized work in moving individuals into employment
Effective lagrangian for a mass dimension one fermionic field in curved spacetime
In this work we use momentum-space techniques to evaluate the propagator
for a spin mass dimension one spinor field on a curved
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. As a consequence, we built the one-loop
correction to the effective lagrangian in the coincidence limit. Going further
we compute the effective lagrangian in the finite temperature regime. We arrive
at interesting cosmological consequences, as time-dependent cosmological
`constant', fully explaining the functional form of previous cosmological
models.Comment: 9 pages, 0 figure
Generalized Weyl-Wigner map and Vey quantum mechanics
The Weyl-Wigner map yields the entire structure of Moyal quantum mechanics
directly from the standard operator formulation. The covariant generalization
of Moyal theory, also known as Vey quantum mechanics, was presented in the
literature many years ago. However, a derivation of the formalism directly from
standard operator quantum mechanics, clarifying the relation between the two
formulations is still missing. In this paper we present a covariant
generalization of the Weyl order prescription and of the Weyl-Wigner map and
use them to derive Vey quantum mechanics directly from the standard operator
formulation. The procedure displays some interesting features: it yields all
the key ingredients and provides a more straightforward interpretation of the
Vey theory including a direct implementation of unitary operator
transformations as phase space coordinate transformations in the Vey idiom.
These features are illustrated through a simple example.Comment: 15 pages, LaTe
Tuned liquid dampers simulation for earthquake response control of buildings
This paper is focused on the study of an earthquake protection system, the Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD), which
can, if adequately designed, reduce earthquake demands on buildings. This positive effect is accomplished taking
into account the oscillation of the free surface of a fluid inside a tank (sloshing). The behaviour of an isolated
Tuned Liquid Damper, subjected to a sinusoidal excitation at its base, with different displacement amplitudes,
was studied by finite element analysis. The efficiency of the TLD in improving the seismic response of an existing building, representative of modern architecture buildings in southern European countries was also evaluated based on linear dynamic analyses
Envisat products secure browsing in mobile clients using JPEG2000 interactivity protocol
Taking advantage of the mobile platforms to interact with the HICOD2000 system has been the motivation for the work described in this paper. Regardless of the limited resources available in mobile platforms the authors demonstrate that using the features of the HICOD2000 system the mobile device might be of major assistance in the field where satellite imagery may have an important and useful role. This paper describes an extension of the HICOD2000 system, available to the public through the ESA Service Support Environment. The EO JPEG2000 compressed products have achieved good compression ratios, minimizing both storage space and bandwidth. Regarding security to sensitive data the system enforces user access rights via a digital rights management platform called OpenSDRM. The mobile device has been endowed with the implementation of the JPIP protocol to optimize network bandwidth as well as the necessary components to interface with the OpenSDRM platform and decode JPSEC protected images: the OpenSDRM wallet and the protection tool.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
