A study of stability analysis of pyroclastic covers based on electrical resistivity measurements
Usually, the degree of stability of a slope is quantified by the Factor of
Safety whose values depend on physical and mechanical soil properties analyzed
on samples of much reduced sizes or referring to very small soil volumes around
porous probes. To overcome the limit of punctual information, we propose a
semi-empirical approach based on the use of geophysical methods and the
employment of a geophysical Factor of Safety recently introduced by the authors
in terms of local resistivities and slope angles. In this paper, we show an
application of our proposal on a test area of about 2000 m2 on Sarno Mountains
(Campania Region - Southern Italy), where shallow landslides involving
pyroclastic soils periodically occur triggered by critical rainfall events.
Starting from two resistivity tomography surveys performed on the test area in
autumn and spring, we obtained maps of the geophysical Factor of Safety at
different depths for the two seasons. We also estimated the values of the
Factor of Safety by using the infinite slope model in the dry and saturated
scenario. A comparison between the values of the geophysical and geotechnical
Factor of Safety shows advantages and disadvantages of our approach.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
A Dynamic Solvency Approach for Life Insurance
The paper investigates risk management processes in life insurance, in a perspective consistent with the framework of Solvency II. The paper starts with the breakdown of the business dynamics. This analysis provides for a complete depiction of risk and value driver within life business. The corresponding map is then put into the solvability context, in order to formally identify the equilibrium conditions. Considerations about the technical equilibrium of an insurance portfolio and the financial regulation lead to a dynamic system of solvency assessment. The formal model is applied to a life annuity cohort in a stochastic context in order to exemplify the potential of the model, especially referred to the need to frame solvency assessment in a dynamic perspective.Life insurance, financial risk, insolvency risk, capital adequacy, financial regulation
GALNT2 mRNA levels are associated with serum triglycerides in humans
Atherogenic dyslipidemia, characterized by high triglycerides (TG) and low high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels, is a feature of patients with insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes (T2D) [1] and plays
a major role in shaping the risk of cardiovascular disease. Both TG and HDL-cholesterol serum concentrations are
under the control of both environmental factors and up to 95 genetic loci, unraveled by a very large genome-wide
association study (GWAs) in approximately 100,000 individuals [2]. Among these loci is GALNT2, which encode
for ppGal-NAc-T2, involved in O-linked glycosylation. Similarly, studies in rodents have shown that liver GALNT2
expression modulates HDL-cholesterol concentrations [2]. Based on such studies, it is conceivable that GALNT2
expression changes play a role on TG and/or HDL-cholesterol levels. To gain further insights about this hypothesis, GALNT2 expression was measured in peripheral white blood cells (PWBC), from 224 individuals
with a wide range of TG and HDL-cholesterol levels, as well as other metabolic parameters and clinical conditions
The current value of the mathematical provision: a financial risk prospect
The paper addresses the question of the calculation of the current value of the mathematical provision and moulds it in a deterministic and stochastic scenario, using a proper term structure of interest rates estimated by means of a Cox-Ingersoll-Ross model. It provides a complete and original year-by-year evaluation model for the business performance, and a closed solution for the current evaluation of the reserve, together with a comprehensive insight into the dynamics of the reserve connected to the selection of a defined term structure of interest rates. Moreover, the calculation of the VaR of the mathematical provision is prospected as risk measure useful to appreciate also the evaluation rate risk. Future research prospects concern the selection of the stochastic process used to describe the dynamics of the interest rates and the possible managerial and regulatory application of a VaR measure. The modelling has been applied, as an exemplification, to a life annuity portfolio but it can be easily replicated for any kind of policy and any kind of portfolios even non homogeneous.Risk indicators, life insurance, solvency, financial risk, demographic risk
Topological jamming of spontaneously knotted polyelectrolyte chains driven through a nanopore
The advent of solid state nanodevices allows for interrogating the
physico-chemical properties of a polyelectrolyte chain by electrophoretically
driving it through a nanopore. Salient dynamical aspects of the translocation
process have been recently characterized by theoretical and computational
studies of model polymer chains free from self-entanglement. However,
sufficiently long equilibrated chains are necessarily knotted. The impact of
such topological "defects" on the translocation process is largely unexplored,
and is addressed in this study. By using Brownian dynamics simulations on a
coarse-grained polyelectrolyte model we show that knots, despite being trapped
at the pore entrance, do not "per se" cause the translocation process to jam.
Rather, knots introduce an effective friction that increases with the applied
force, and practically halts the translocation above a threshold force. The
predicted dynamical crossover, which is experimentally verifiable, is of
relevance in applicative contexts, such as DNA nanopore sequencing.Comment: 6 pages; 7 figure
1. Lo studio della geologia regionale della Corsica attraverso la bibliografia disponibile;
2. Il rilevamento geologico strutturale circoscritto in unâarea di circa 100 km2 che ha portato alla realizzazione di una carta geologica dalla quale si sono elaborate le cartografie a scala 1:5000 e 1:10000;
3. Lâanalisi strutturale alla mesoscala ed elaborazione dei dati raccolti in campagna;
4. Lo studio al microscopio ottico di 30 sezioni sottili;
5. Lâacquisizione alla microsonda EPMA delle analisi chimiche e la relativa elaborazione dei dati mediante la termodinamica;
6. La ricostruzione dellâevoluzione strutturale del settore studiato mediante lâintegrazione di tutti i dati raccolti;
