    Time-dependent analysis of a fiber-optic passive-loop resonator

    Get PDF
A time-dependent analysis of an all-single-mode fiber-optic resonator is presented in which the input field is allowed to exhibit an arbitrary dependence on time. In particular, the transmissivity of the resonator is evaluated for an input field possessing an arbitrary temporal coherence, which allows one to consider the role of the source coherence time as compared with the fiber time delay

Propagation and stability of optical pulses in a diffractive dispersive non-linear medium

    Get PDF
Propagation and stability of light pulses under the combined influence of the optical Kerr effect, dispersion and diffraction are investigated by adopting a variational procedure. In particular, it is found that 'light bullets', i.e. radially symmetric pulses propagating without distortion, are not necessarily unstable under perturbations which do not maintain radial symmetry

Built-in reduction of statistical fluctuations of partitioning objects

    Get PDF
Our theoretical and numerical investigation of the movement of an object that partitions a microtubule filled with small particles indicates that vibrations warranted by thermal equilibrium are reached only after a time that increases exponentially with the number of particles involved. This points to a basic mechanical process capable of breaching, on accessible time scales, the ultimate ergodic constraints that force randomness on bound microscale and nanoscale systems

Nonlinear propagation in Kerr media of beams with unequal transverse widths

    Get PDF
We investigate three-dimensional propagation in bulk Kerr media of beams possessing different widths in the two transverse dimensions, under the combined effects of self-focusing and diffraction. This allows us to elucidate the process of self-trapping and provides a quantitative interpretation of recent experimental observations of beam self-deflection [Barthelemy et al., Opt. Lett. 17, 844 (1992)]

Influence of chromatic dispersion on degenerate four-wave mixing

    Get PDF
We investigate the way in which four-wave mixing in a waveguide is affected by chromatic dispersion. The frequency dependence of the associated phase-conjugate mirror reflectivity turns out not to be influenced by chromatic dispersion itself

Polarization and energy dynamics in ultrafocused optical Kerr propagation

    Get PDF
Developing a complete vectorial description of optical nonparaxial propagation of highly focused beams in Kerr media, we disclose a family of new phenomena. These phenomena appear to emerge as a consequence of the mutual coupling of all three components of the optical field. This circumstance, which is intrinsic to the very nature of Kerr propagation, was previously discarded on the basis of the conjecture that a reduced system is possible in which only one transverse field component interacts with the longitudinal component

Speckle-pattern visibility of light transmitted through a multimode optical fiber

    Get PDF
We show that the reduction in visibility of the speckle pattern obtained from laser light that has been passed through a step-index light guide can be found from a knowledge of the model dispersion of the guide, and the bandwidth of the laser beam
