The Sesleria juncifolia calcareous grasslands in the Apulia region (southern Italy) were studied on the basis of 24 phytosociological relevés. According to UPGMA cluster analysis division and NMDS ordination the relevés were classified into four major groups which gave rise to three sub-associations (Gargano) and a geographically impoverished variant (Alta Murgia). The new association Stipo austroitalicae-Seslerietum juncifoliae ass. nova was proposed. Due to the relict and scattered distribution of Sesleria juncifolia in Apulia region, the variances in species composition amongst the different subassociationsare mainly influenced by local factors. The community Stipo-Seslerietum should be included in the south-eastern Italian alliance Hippocrepido-Stipion austroitalicae while at the rank of order it exhibits intermediate coenological features between the Central- South Apennine endemic suborder Festuco-Seslerienalia nitidae and the North-West Balkan order Scorzonero-Chrysopogonetalia

Organic matter as a source of nitrogen

The trials can be put into three groups: 1. Plus and minus ripping by species by bag nitrogen. This trial had a number of different species grown in 1982 and half of the trial was ripped in 1983 and the whole site sown to wheat with different rates of nitrogen applied to the subplots. Part of the information on the trial is contained in Bill Bowden\u27s 1983 summary. 2. Species and management trials, namely 82LG5, 82Nl7, 82N041 and 82N03. 3. These trials had a number of different species grown in 1982 to which a number of management factors were applied including ploughing in at flowering, spraying out at flowering and plus and, minus tops at flowering and at the end of the season. In 1983 these plots were all put into wheat with some small cross-strips of bag nitrogen rates at the end also added on. Two rotation trials 81C4 and 81N9 which had a combination of rates of clover sown in different years, by fertiliser nitrogen rates and different crop sequences. These trials were not very successful partly because the design did not really meet the objectives and partly because the sites chosen had a fairly high nitrogen status to start with and we were therefore looking at a nitrogen rundown situation for effects rather than a nitrogen build-up situation. Trials: 81C4 (related trials: 81N9). 82LG5 (related trials: 82NO41, 82N03, 82Nl7). 81N9 (related trials: 81C4). 82N17 (related trials: 82NO41, 82NO3, 82LG5). 82NO3 (related trials: 82N17, 82NO41, 82LG5). 82NO41 (related trials: 82LG5, 82NO3, 82N17). 82WH35

Introduction: Despite the launching of multiple initiatives to increase recruitment into psychiatry, the profession continues to remain undersubscribed. Studies have shown that teaching on global mental health can improve attitudes toward psychiatry in medical students. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have been published hitherto that evaluate if a brief teaching session (i.e. 60 minutes in duration) on global mental health improves perceptions of psychiatry and increases interest in this specialty as a career. Subjects and methods: We conducted a single-arm, pre- post- comparison study on participants who attended a King’s College London Global Health Society event on Global Mental Health. Participants completed a survey before and after exposure to the event. Our aims were to detect and measure if there were any changes in perceptions of psychiatry and if a brief teaching session on global mental health would increase interest in pursuing psychiatry as a career. Results: 71 out of 90 participants responded (77.8% response rate). Following exposure to the event, there were statistically significant improvements in the scores for, “Psychiatry is interesting” (pre-event score 4.41, post-event score 4.66 p value <0.001), “I would talk positively about psychiatry to other people” (pre-event score 4.02, post-event score 4.48 p value <0.00001), and, “I would consider psychiatry as a career” (pre-event score 3.24, post-event score 3.72 p value <0.001). Conclusion: The results of our pilot study suggest that a brief lecture on global mental health may improve perceptions of psychiatry and increase interest in this specialty as a career. We recommend that global mental health be introduced into the medical school curriculum since this may help to increase recruitment into psychiatry

A novel PAX5 rearrangement in TCF3-PBX1 acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Chromosome translocations are a hallmark of B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL). Additional genomic aberrations are also crucial in both BCP-ALL leukemogenesis and treatment management. Herein, we report the phenotypic and molecular cytogenetic characterization of an extremely rare case of BCP-ALL harboring two concomitant leukemia-associated chromosome translocations: t(1;19)(q23;q13.3) and t(9;17)(p13;q11.2). Of note, we described a new rearrangement between exon 6 of PAX5 and a 17q11.2 region, where intron 3 of SPECC1 is located. This rearrangement seems to disrupt PAX5 similarly to a PAX5 deletion. Furthermore, a distinct karyotype between diagnosis and relapse samples was observed, disclosing a complex clonal evolution during leukemia progression. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old boy was admitted febrile with abdominal and joint pain. At clinical investigation, he presented with anemia, splenomegaly, low white blood cell count and 92% lymphoblast. He was diagnosed with pre-B ALL and treated according to high risk GBTLI-ALL2009. Twelve months after complete remission, he developed a relapse in consequence of a high central nervous system and bone marrow infiltration, and unfortunately died. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first report of a rearrangement between PAX5 and SPECC1. The presence of TCF3-PBX1 and PAX5-rearrangement at diagnosis and relapse indicates that both might have participated in the malignant transformation disease maintenance and dismal outcome

Capillary electrophoresis of hair proteins modified by alcohol intake in laboratory rats

Abstract A capillary zone electrophoretic method was used to obtain profiles of solubilized rat hair keratin proteins. The same methodology was used to reveal the presence of additional protein peaks in alcohol-consuming rats. Two types of separation were investigated. Alkali-solubilized keratins from hair of rats treated for 5 weeks with 5% ethanol and 2 weeks with 10% ethanol (instead of drinking water) and from controls were analysed. Whereas under alkaline conditions (pH 9.2, 50 mM borate) an additional fraction of "low-sulphur" keratins with the highest anodic mobility of this keratin category was shown in alcohol-treated animals, acid electrophoresis carried out at pH 3.5 in phosphate buffer (50 mM) revealed the presence of two sharp peaks absent in the controls. These findings were confirmed by two-dimensional separations of carboxymethylated keratin samples. An attempt was made to identify further one of the newly occurring fractions in alcohol-consuming animals. It was revealed that the tryptic hydrolysate of "low-sulphur" proteins obtained from alcohol-consuming animals contained a peptide not found in controls
