    Cross-level Validation of Topological Quantum Circuits

    Quantum computing promises a new approach to solving difficult computational problems, and the quest of building a quantum computer has started. While the first attempts on construction were succesful, scalability has never been achieved, due to the inherent fragile nature of the quantum bits (qubits). From the multitude of approaches to achieve scalability topological quantum computing (TQC) is the most promising one, by being based on an flexible approach to error-correction and making use of the straightforward measurement-based computing technique. TQC circuits are defined within a large, uniform, 3-dimensional lattice of physical qubits produced by the hardware and the physical volume of this lattice directly relates to the resources required for computation. Circuit optimization may result in non-intuitive mismatches between circuit specification and implementation. In this paper we introduce the first method for cross-level validation of TQC circuits. The specification of the circuit is expressed based on the stabilizer formalism, and the stabilizer table is checked by mapping the topology on the physical qubit level, followed by quantum circuit simulation. Simulation results show that cross-level validation of error-corrected circuits is feasible.Comment: 12 Pages, 5 Figures. Comments Welcome.     Replacement of Sub Clover

    This is a progress report in summary form outlining results obtained from trials studying clover replacement and evaluating Midland B, Dinninup 3, some members of Trifolium subterraneum subspecies yanninicum, Tornafield medic and Cyfield medic. Some comments are also included on two glasshouse experiments. In most cases complete results have been or will be circulated in report form. Eight trials examining techniques of subterranean clover replacement were continued in 1969, one other (Avondale Research Station) was discontinued due to the atypical nature of the site. \u27I\u27wo trials, one at Narrogin (68NA12) and one at Katanning (68KA6) were commenced in 1969. Weather conditions prevented them being started in 1968. Both were sited on established Dwalganup sub clover pastures which yielded 1124.7 lbs of clover seed and 981.0 lbs of clover seed/acre respectively when sampled on March 17, 1969. Both trials were sown as scheduled. Unfortunately the unfavourable season affected the growth of pasture and crop at both sites. A plague of red legged earth mite at Katanning is blamed for removing all of the few clover plants that germinated. The crop plots grew poorly (very uneven) and were damaged ·by sheep due to the fences being placed too close to the trial. These factors led to the immediate termination of the trial. At Narrog.n the nine first-year crop plots averaged 23 bushels of Gamenya wheat per acre.The pasture plots will be sampled in autumn 1970 for clover seed yield. This trial will be continued as scheduled. The second year of similar trials were continued at Three Springs (68TS11) Wongan Hills Research Station (68WH6) and Gingin (68M06).     Specification format and a verification method of fault-tolerant quantum circuits

    © 2018 American Physical Society. Quantum computations are expressed in general as quantum circuits, which are specified by ordered lists of quantum gates. The resulting specifications are used during the optimization and execution of the expressed computations. However, the specification format makes it difficult to verify that optimized or executed computations still conform to the initial gate list specifications: showing the computational equivalence between two quantum circuits expressed by different lists of quantum gates is exponentially complex in the worst case. In order to solve this issue, this work presents a derivation of the specification format tailored specifically for fault-tolerant quantum circuits. The circuits are considered a form consisting entirely of single qubit initializations, cnot gates, and single qubit measurements (ICM form). This format allows, under certain assumptions, to efficiently verify optimized (or implemented) computations. Two verification methods based on checking stabilizer circuit structures are presented

    The new theory of reference has won popularity. However, a number of noted philosophers have also attempted to reply to the critical arguments of Kripke and others, and aimed to vindicate the description theory of reference. Such responses are often based on ingenious novel kinds of descriptions, such as rigidified descriptions, causal descriptions, and metalinguistic descriptions. This prolonged debate raises the doubt whether different parties really have any shared understanding of what the central question of the philosophical theory of reference is: what is the main question to which descriptivism and the causal-historical theory have presented competing answers. One aim of the paper is to clarify this issue. The most influential objections to the new theory of reference are critically reviewed. Special attention is also paid to certain important later advances in the new theory of reference, due to Devitt and others
