    Perceptions of grade ten learners in the Tongaat area of career guidance.

    Thesis (M.Ed.) - University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1999.The aim of this study was to explore career guidance needs and perceptions of grade 10 learners. An attempt was made to examine what is currently offered in career guidance and what learners would like included in career guidance programmes. This would be explored in the light of what the theory says about the needs of adolescents i.e. how do career guidance programmes (current and desired) match the postulated needs of the adolescent. The validity of considering learners' needs and perceptions relates to the relevance and effectiveness of such career guidance programmes. The sample consists of 100 grade 10 learners drawn from a coeducational secondary school in the Tongaat area. To facilitate learners' career needs, a primarily qualitative approach was adopted. Learners were asked to write a descriptive essay on (a) What is currently offered in career guidance? and (b) What do you want to learn in career guidance so that the lessons will be helpful to you? (Euvrard, 1996). The research design sought to determine the expressed career needs of the learners. The results of the study were discussed in the light of current theoretical perspectives on career guidance and developmental psychology. The themes that have emerged from the study confirms the need for a developmentally-contextual approach to career education. This perspective underscores the dynamic interaction between the individual and the individual's contexts. Career guidance programmes need to take cognisance of current changes occuring in society for purposes of relevance and sustainability

    Biodiversity, Distribution and Host Range of the Genus Ephedrus Haliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) in Manipur, N.E. India

    The aphidiid wasps are small ichneumonoid hymenopterous insects which are strictly specific solitary endophagous parasitoids of the aphids. They are amongst the most important group of parasitic insects that can be utilized as bio-control agent of aphids. So far 60 genera of aphidiid parasitoids have been described from all over the world. Out of these the genus Ephedrus Haliday is a common one. An extensive study of this genus along with their aphid hosts in different localities of Manipur during 2007- 2008 revealed the occurrence of 13 species belonging to the genus viz. Ephedrus brevis, E. cerasicola, E. dioscorae, E. lacertosus, E. minor, E. nacheri, E. niger, E. orientalis, E. persicae, E. plagiator, E. srinagarensis, Ephedrus sp.a and Ephedrus sp.b. The parasitoids revealed variations in terms of their altitudinal distribution (from 785m.to 1920 m. MSL).  Most of the parasitoid species exhibited host specificity however E. plagiator showed extreme polyphagy parasitizing 4 aphid host species infesting different host plants

Hal itu mengakibatkan hasil belajar peserta didik kurang maksimal. Oleh karena itu diperlukan adanya model pembelajaran yang menarik yang dapat membangkitkan rasa semangat siswa saat pembelajaran didalam kelas dan pembelajaran yang membebaskan peserta didik itu untuk berpendapat dan mengembangkan kreatifitasnya dalam menyampaikan pendapat. Pembelajaran tesrebut adalah model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe STAD. Model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe STAD yaitu proses pembelajaran yang menekankan pendekatan pembelajaran yang berfokus pada penggunaan kelompok kecil siswa untuk bekerja sama dalam memaksimalkan kondisi belajar untuk mencapai tujuan belajar yang diinginkan. Rumusan masalah dalam penulisan skripsi ini adalah : (1) Adakah pengaruh penggunaan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Student Teams Achivement Divisions (STAD) terhadap hasil belajar fiqih siswa dilihat dari aspek kognitif? (2) Adakah pengaruh penggunaan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Student Teams Achivement Divisions (STAD) terhadap hasil belajar Fiqih siswa dilihat dari aspek afektif ? (3) Adakah pengaruh penggunaan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Student Teams Achivement Divisions (STAD) terhadap hasil belajar Fiqih siswa dilihat dari aspek psikomotorik ? Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan eksperimen dengan Quasi Eksperimen Design atau eksperimen semu tipe Nonequivalent Control Group Design. Variabel bebas dalam penelitian ini adalah model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe STAD, sedangkan variabel terikatnya adalah hasil belajar fiqih siswa kelas VIII MTs As-Syafi’iyah Pogalan Trenggalek. Populasi yaitu seluruh siswa kelas VIII MTs As-Syafi’iyah Pogalan Trenggalek yang berjumlah 75 siswa. Pengambilan sampel digunakan teknik Probability Sampling dan menggunakan jenis Simple Random Sampling. Simple Random Sampling adalah pengambilan anggota sampel dari populasi dilakukan secara acak tanpa memperhatikan strata yang ada dalam populasi itu, hal ini disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan peneliti yang hanya menggunakan dua kelas yaitu satu kelas sebagai kelas kontrol dan satu kelas sebagai kelas eksperimen. Sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah 53 siswa dari kelas eksperimen (VIII A) dan kelas kontrol (VIII B). Teknik yang digunakan untuk pengambilan data yaitu tes, angket (kuesioner), observasi, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: (1) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan, pada hasil belajar kognitif diperoleh nilai signifikan sebesar 0,000 untuk Kelas A dan Kelas B. Nilai tersebut lebih kecil dari 0,05 sehingga H_0 ditolak. (2) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan, pada hasil belajar Afektif diperoleh nilai signifikan sebesar 0,005. Nilai tersebut lebih kecil dari 0,05 sehingga H_0 ditolak. (3) Terdapat pengaruh pada hasil belajar Psikomotorik, bahwa nilai signifikan sebesar 0,000. Nilai tersebut lebih kecil dari nilai 0,05 sehingga H_0 ditolak

    The spatial distribution of three coccinellid predators-Harmonia dimidiata Fabricius, Harmonia eucharis (Mulsant) and Cheilomenes sexmaculata Fabricius on oak plant was studied at experimental field of Regional Tasar Research Station (RTRS), Mantripukhri, Manipur during two consecutive cropping seasons (2009-10 & 2010-11). The various statistical parameters-variance to mean ratio, mean crowding, Llyod's index of patchiness, index of clumping, mean colony size, dispersion parameter-k, co-efficient of variance, Iwao's regression and Taylor's Power Law were used to study the distribution pattern of predators on oak plant.     Comparison of ventilatory efficacy and airway dynamics between ProSeal laryngeal mask airway and endotracheal tube in adult patients during general anesthesia

    Background and Aims: Studies have demonstrated minimal hemodynamic variation and postoperative complications with ProSeal laryngeal mask airway (PLMA) compared to endotracheal tube (ETT). Hence, a study was conducted to compare the ventilatory parameters and airway dynamics required to maintain normocarbia and stable hemodynamics with PLMA and ETT. Material and Methods: A prospective, randomized, single blinded study was conducted on 60 patients aged 20-40 years of American society of anesthesiologists class I and II, divided into Group PLMA and Group ETT. Standard anesthesia protocol was instituted. Group PLMA received PLMA sizes as per manufacturer′s recommendations and group ETT received appropriate sized cuffed ETT. Patients were initially ventilated at 14 bpm, I:E ratio 1:2, tidal volume (Vt) 6 ml/kg and later adjusted to maintain end tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO 2 ) between 35 and 40 mmHg. Peak airway pressure (Ppeak), compliance (Compl.), Vt, airway resistance (R aw ), hemodynamic parameters, oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ) and EtCO 2 were recorded throughout surgery. Postoperative complications if any, were noted. Results: Demographic parameters, R aw , EtCO 2 , SpO 2 were comparable between groups. Ppeak was lower and Vt needed to maintain EtCO 2 of 35-40 mmHg was lesser in Group PLMA. Compl was low for 5 min after insertion of PLMA. Heart rate was significantly reduced at 1 min post insertion; blood pressures were significantly lower upto 2 min after insertion and post removal in group PLMA. Incidence of cough was significantly lower in group PLMA. Conclusion: ProSeal laryngeal mask airway maintains adequate ventilation at lower Vts and minimal peak pressures, has lesser hemodynamic variations and lower incidence of postoperative cough compared to ETT

    Intrathecal dexmedetomidine as adjuvant for spinal anaesthesia for perianal ambulatory surgeries: A randomised double-blind controlled study

    Background and Aim: The newer trend in regional anaesthesia for ambulatory anorectal surgeries advocate use of lower dose of local anaesthetic, providing segmental block with adjuvants such as opioids and α2 agonists to prolong analgesia. The current study investigated effects of addition of 5 μg of dexmedetomidine to 6 mg of hyperbaric bupivacaine on duration of analgesia, sensory and motor block characteristics for perianal ambulatory surgeries. Methods: This study is a prospective randomised controlled double blind study. Forty adult patients between 18 and 55 years of age were divided into 2 groups. Group D received intrathecal 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine 6 mg (1.2 ml) with injection dexmedetomidine 5 μg in 0.5 ml of normal saline and Group N received intrathecal 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine 6 mg (1.2 ml) with 0.5 ml of normal saline. The parameters assessed were time to regression of sensory blockade, motor blockade, ambulation, time to void, first administration of analgesic. Statistical analysis was done using appropriate tests. Results: Time for regression of sensory level and time for first administration of analgesic were prolonged in Group D (430.05 ± 89.13 min, 459.8 ± 100.9 min, respectively) in comparison to Group N (301.10 ± 94.86 min, 321.85 ± 95.08 min, respectively). However, the duration of motor blockade, time to ambulation, and time to void were also significantly prolonged in Group D (323.05 ± 54.58 min, 329.55 ± 54.06 min, 422.30 ± 87.59 min) than in Group N (220.10 ± 63.61 min, 221.60 ± 63.84 min, 328.45 ± 113.38 min). Conclusion: Intrathecal dexmedetomidine 5 μg added to intrathecal bupivacaine 6 mg as adjuvant may not be suitable for ambulatory perianal surgeries due to prolongation of motor blockade
