    1. Precise relative humidity (RH) measurements are difficult and therefore seldom in the free atmosphere up to now. The radiosondes of the national weather services do not fulfill the requirements of the accuracy. Fundamental problems of RH measurement exist for temperatures below -30 C (upper troposphere and stratosphere). 2. The working objective was the supply of precise RH vertical profils applying to the Lindenberg Aerosol Characterization Experiment (LACE) in the period July 13 to August 12 1998. 3. The software and the calibration of the Lindenberg humidity reference research radiosonde RS90 FN has been improved applying the method of 'standardized frequencies'. 4. Precise humidity profiles (which an absolute precision of about (#+-#1%) were provided). These profiles have been used both in the framework of the experiment LACE and for the corrections of the operational radiosonde RS80. 5. The main applications of the 'standardized frequencies' method are the validation and correction of other humidity measuring techniques [LIDAR, microwave radiometry, infrared spectroscopy, in situ humidity sensors]. Lindenberg Aerosol Characterization Experiment 1998 (LACE 98): overview

During the Lindenberg Aerosol Characterization Experiment 1998 (LACE 98), conducted from July 13 to August 12, 1998 about 70 km southeast of Berlin, Germany, atmospheric aerosol particles were characterized in order to quantify radiative effects of representative summer-time aerosol distributions in central Europe as well as to determine uncertainties in these quantifications. Intensive, in-situ closure studies were performed using the highly time and size-resolving ground-based measurements. Coordinated, vertically resolved measurements of the chemical composition, the optical and microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosol particles, and of irradiances were conducted by means of three aircraft and two ground stations. Furthermore, three advanced aerosol lidars were operate during LACE 98. The goals, instrumentation, weather and aerosol conditions, and key experimental findings of LACE 98 are summarized. In the framework of the present research project the Meterological Observatory of Lindenberg (MOL) was equipped with the scientific and technical means necessary for the future operational application at the German weather service of ground-based remote sounding technologies such as 'windprofiler radar', radio-acoustic sounding system (RASS). Several case studies were used to demonstrate the multifarious possibilities of analysing mesoscale tropospheric structures by means of windprofiler radar and RASS. Besides this, further information such as mixing layer thickness and heat flux were derived from windprofiler and RASS measurements and the applied algorithms were tried on case examples.
