Adaptive structures - concepts and prospects The DLR project ARES (Actively Reacting Flexible Structures)
Vibration and stability phenomena cause performance restrictions in our technical world. An innovative technology - that of adaptive structures - seems to be a new development step that clearly exceeds the actual existing technical limits. The DLR is increasing its efforts in adaptive structures research within the project ARES (Actively Reacting Flexible Structures). The concept of ARES is essentially proposed here. Eulerloesungen mittels Chimeratechnik fuer instationaere kompressible Stroemungen
Relative motion of two or more bodies to each other is an unsteady problem of fluid dynamics. The area of the solution is discretised by several gridblocks which overlap. This technique is called chimeratechnique. For numerical solution of the two-dimensional Euler equations an Upwind-scheme is used. The grids, which undergo rigid-body motions, are created by a Poisson mesh generator. First, basic research on shocks in the overlaping region is done. The one-block solution is the reference. The pressure-, lift- and moment-distributions are compared for both cases. Finally a separation of two bodies of a hypersonic vehicle and the passing of two bodies (NACA 0012-airfoils) in a tunnel are calculated.
(orig.)The dynamic behavior of aerospace structures within the time domain can be simulated essentially on the basis of the development in terms of natural modes of oscillation and by direct integration of the differential equations of motion. The latter possibility is the topical focus of this report. Various finite difference methods have been developed for the numerical solution of such initial value problems, which methods mainly differ in terms of CPU time, stability and accuracy. For this reason, the most common methods and a higher order method are described in a standardized notation, and are investigated and discussed in an initially purely elastomechanical model. The algorithms are presented in a format that permits direct implementation on computers. Finally, the lessons learned are used to solve a simple aeroelastic problem, and some peculiarities occurring during the integration of the aeroelastic differential equations of motion are addressed.
