Promoting inclusion oral-health:social interventions to reduce oral health inequities
The aim of this collection of papers is to provide the reader with a cogent understanding of the role of evidence in the development of social or community-based interventions to promote inclusion oral-health and reduce oral health, health, and psychosocial inequities. In addition, this material will include various methods used for their implementation and evaluation. At the outset, the reader will be offered a working definition of inclusion oral-health, which will be modelled on the work of Luchenski et al. [1]. The interventions described are theoretically underpinned by a pluralistic definition of evidence-based practice [2] and the radical discourse of health promotion as postulated by Laverack and Labonte [3] and others [4,5]. This Special Issue will consist of eight papers, including an introduction. The first three papers will examine the various sources of evidence used to transform top-down into bottom-up community-based interventions for people experiencing homelessness; people in custody and for families residing in areas of high social deprivation. The final four papers will report on the implementation and evaluation of social or community-based interventions. This collection of research papers will highlight the importance of focusing on prevention and the adoption of a common risk factor agenda to tackle oral health, health and psychosocial inequities felt by those most excluded in our societies
Visualisation of BioPAX Networks using BioLayout Express (3D).
BioLayout Express (3D) is a network analysis tool designed for the visualisation and analysis of graphs derived from biological data. It has proved to be powerful in the analysis of gene expression data, biological pathways and in a range of other applications. In version 3.2 of the tool we have introduced the ability to import, merge and display pathways and protein interaction networks available in the BioPAX Level 3 standard exchange format. A graphical interface allows users to search for pathways or interaction data stored in the Pathway Commons database. Queries using either gene/protein or pathway names are made via the cPath2 client and users can also define the source and/or species of information that they wish to examine. Data matching a query are listed and individual records may be viewed in isolation or merged using an 'Advanced' query tab. A visualisation scheme has been defined by mapping BioPAX entity types to a range of glyphs. Graphs of these data can be viewed and explored within BioLayout as 2D or 3D graph layouts, where they can be edited and/or exported for visualisation and editing within other tools
Cultivating a Community of Practice model to support and encourage innovative T&L practices to engage practitioners and enhance student success
Communities of Practice (CoPs) are naturally forming groups of individuals who come together through a shared passion or goal and learn collectively by reciprocating knowledge and experiences. With competing demands of faculty, universities are increasingly challenged to provide professional development opportunities that actively encourage innovative pedagogical practices to enhance student success and quality of the learner experience. We report on four embryonic CoPs, based on collaborative processes, supporting institutional transformation and the formation of a new education model at Ireland’s first Technological University (TU). Juxtaposing a series of planned learning innovations with spontaneous interactions and actions of CoP members, we draw out common themes with respect to how these members developed as professional educators, how they accelerated the adoption of new innovations and their perceived factors for CoP success. Findings from this funded initiative are first reported as separate case-studies each covering a six-month period. The CoP model is then evaluated as a professional development strategy to initiate and sustain practice-based change. Finally, a thematic analysis of our shared perceptions across the four CoPs is undertaken. Whilst selection bias is inherent in these perceptions, we nevertheless conclude from our shared experiences that CoPs are particularly attuned to rapid and extensive adoption of teaching and learning practice innovations and organisational transformation in Higher Education (HE). Consequently, CoPs can serve as vehicles for sustainable professional development in teaching and learning practice. Based on our findings, we offer recommendations for fostering CoPs in supporting strategy-as-practice in the technological university sector
Assessing the Proposed IAM, UAW, and USW Merger: Critical Issues and Potential Outcomes
[Excerpt] We examine the many difficult issues facing the IAM, UAW, and USW as they move toward the creation of a single organization. In order to place this merger in con- text, the larger issue of mergers in the American labor movement will be addressed, as will the origins and history of each of the three unions. The specific issues confronting the unions will be examined in three categories — structure, administration, and functions and services. We conclude with an assessment of the current status of the unification effort and the prospects for its realization
Recruitment of inflammatory monocytes by senescent fibroblasts inhibits antigen-specific tissue immunity during human aging
We have previously shown that healthy older adults exhibit reduced cutaneous immune responses during a varicella zoster virus (VZV) antigen challenge that correlated with a nonspecific inflammatory response to the injection itself. Here we found that needle damage during intradermal injections in older adults led to an increase in the number of cutaneous senescent fibroblasts expressing CCL2, resulting in the local recruitment of inflammatory monocytes. These infiltrating monocytes secreted prostaglandin E2, which inhibited resident memory T cell activation and proliferation. Pretreatment of older participants with a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitor in vivo decreased CCL2 expression and inhibited monocyte recruitment and secretion of prostaglandin E2. This coincided with an increased response to VZV antigen challenge in the skin. Our results point to a series of molecular and cellular mechanisms that link cellular senescence, tissue damage, excessive inflammation and reduced immune responsiveness in human skin and demonstrate that tissue-specific immunity can be restored in older adults by short-term inhibition of inflammatory responses
