Goffman’s Return to Las Vegas: Studying Corruption as Social Interaction
In this paper, we argue that corruption research can benefit from studying corrupt transactions as a particular form of social interaction. We showcase the usefulness of a theoretical focus on social interaction by investigating online user reports on the website Frontdesktip.com. Through this focus, we can observe users sharing experiences and tips on the best ways of bribing hotel clerks in Las Vegas for attaining room upgrades and other complimentary extras. We employ a logistic regression analysis to examine what factors influence the “successful” performance of this bribery practice. Our study makes a twofold contribution to existing research on corruption. First, on the theoretical level, we show that the typified and scripted character of social interactions can help explain the occurrence of corrupt transactions. Second, on a methodological level, our study showcases online self-reports as a useful data source to study corrupt transactions in an unobtrusive way
(Autorenreferat)"In this paper, the authors examine the process of global corporate social responsibility (CSR) standardization. By drawing on neo-institutionalist theories they distinguish between the breadth and depth dimension of CSR standardization. Based on their empirical study of the 'Equator Principles', a CSR standard in the field of international project finance, they exemplify that CSR standards indeed can disseminate rapidly and widely within an industry (breadth dimension). However, they also show that their impact is contingent upon discursive negotiation processes that affect whether the formal adoption of a standard is perceived as meaningful and legitimate, in turn engendering the actual organizational implementation of practices (depth dimension)." Lessons in Fluidity: Anonymous and the Communicative Formation of Organizational Identity
Most research on organizational identity tends to take an essentialist perspective, differentiating between an identity construed internally by members of the organization and an image construed by external actors. However, the duality of identity and image struggles with capturing more fluid, open, or partial organizational arrangements, where it is difficult to uphold this distinction. Looking at the case of the hacker collective Anonymous as an extreme example of organization, this paper proposes to adopt a communication-centered perspective in order to better understand the formation of organizational identity. Drawing on the emerging âcommunicative constitution of organizationsâ (CCO) framework, we transcend both an essentialist and a member-centered view by arguing that organizational identity is achieved through communicative events that demarcate the boundaries between actions attributed either to the organization or to the organizational environment
Organisationskommunikation und Public Relations Organisations- trifft Kommunikationsforschung: Der Beitrag der âCommunication Constitutes Organizationâ-Perspektive (CCO)
This article introduces one emergent theoretical perspective from the North American research field of organizational communication that has come to be called âcommunication constitutes organizationâ (CCO). The CCO perspective ascribes to communication a fundamental role in the constitution of organizations: Organizations basically consist of interconnected events of communication
