Tuning the plasmonic properties of silver nanopatterns fabricated by shadow nanosphere lithography
Regular silver (Ag) nanopatterns, from disconnected nanotriangles to well coupled triangular clusters of nanoparticles, were prepared by shadow nanosphere lithography at different incident angles Īø from 0 degrees to 20 degrees with continuous azimuthal rotation. The resulting nanopatterns were consistent with predictions by numerical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations of adatoms with high diffusivity. The visible localized surface plasmon resonance of these nanopatterns was tuned by Īø systematically due to the change in size, shape, and arrangement of Ag nanopatterns. These resonances were consistent with finite-difference time-domain simulations using realistic nanopatterns based upon scanning electron micrographs. Such a simple fabrication strategy can be used to optimize surface enhanced Raman scattering substrate fabrication, as well as other plasmonics based applications
Reliability of Peak Cardiorespiratory Responses During Aquatic Treadmill Exercise
Twenty-four college-age participants took part in 2 protocols on an aquatic treadmill (ATM) submerged to the xiphoid process. ATM speed was increased to 212.2 + 19.2 m/min, and water-jet resistance was increased 10% every minute thereafter. Rest between sessions was at least 6 days. Oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR), minute ventilation (VE), tidal volume (VT), breathing frequency (f), and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) were measured continuously. Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) was recorded immediately after each test, and blood lactate (LA) was measured 3 min after. There were no significant differences for Trial 1 vs. Trial 2 for any variable. ICCs were very strong (r = .90-.99) and coefficients of variants (CVs) were low (1.3-4.7%) for VO2peak, HR, VE, VT; ICCās were moderate (r = .73-.76) and CVs were greater (2.5-9.3%) was greater for f, RER and LA. The ATM VO2peak protocol used in this study produces consistent, reproducible VO2peak values
Synthesis and reactivity of tricarbonyl(1-methoxycarbonyl-5-phenylpentadienyl)iron(1+) cation
Tricarbonyl(1-methoxycarbonyl-5-phenylpentadienyl)iron(1+) hexafluorophosphate (7) was prepared in two steps from tricarbonyl(methyl 6-oxo-2,4-hexadienoate)iron. While addition of carbon and heteroatom nucleophiles to 7 generally occurs at the phenyl-substituted dienyl carbon to afford (2,4-dienoate)iron products, the addition of phthalimide proceeded at C2 to afford a (pentenediyl)iron product (18). Complex 18 was structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis.
The reaction of the title cation with carbon and heteroatom nucleophiles was examined. In general, the products arise from nucleophilic attack at C5 to give E,E- or E,Z-dienoate iron complexes. Addition of phthalimide anion proceeds at C2 of the cation to afford a (pentenediyl)iron complex, whose structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis
Characteristics of US Adults Who Have Positive and Negative Perceptions of Doctors of Chiropractic and Chiropractic Care
AbstractObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to compare characteristics, likelihood to use, and actual use of chiropractic care for US survey respondents with positive and negative perceptions of doctors of chiropractic (DCs) and chiropractic care.MethodsFrom a 2015 nationally representative survey of 5422 adults (response rate, 29%), we used respondents' answers to identify those with positive and negative perceptions of DCs or chiropractic care. We used the Ļ2 test to compare other survey responses for these groups.ResultsPositive perceptions of DCs were more common than those for chiropractic care, whereas negative perceptions of chiropractic care were more common than those for DCs. Respondents with negative perceptions of DCs or chiropractic care were less likely to know whether chiropractic care was covered by their insurance, more likely to want to see a medical doctor first if they were experiencing neck or back pain, less likely to indicate that they would see a DC for neck or back pain, and less likely to have ever seen a DC as a patient, particularly in the recent past. Positive perceptions of chiropractic care and negative perceptions of DCs appear to have greater influence on DC utilization rates than their converses.ConclusionWe found that US adults generally perceive DCs in a positive manner but that a relatively high proportion has negative perceptions of chiropractic care, particularly the costs and number of visits required by such care. Characteristics of respondents with positive and negative perceptions were similar, but those with positive perceptions were more likely to plan to useāand to have already receivedāchiropractic care

Linked and knotted beams of light, conservation of helicity and the flow of null electromagnetic fields
Maxwell's equations allow for some remarkable solutions consisting of pulsed
beams of light which have linked and knotted field lines. The preservation of
the topological structure of the field lines in these solutions has previously
been ascribed to the fact that the electric and magnetic helicity, a measure of
the degree of linking and knotting between field lines, are conserved. Here we
show that the elegant evolution of the field is due to the stricter condition
that the electric and magnetic fields be everywhere orthogonal. The field lines
then satisfy a `frozen field' condition and evolve as if they were unbreakable
filaments embedded in a fluid. The preservation of the orthogonality of the
electric and magnetic field lines is guaranteed for null, shear-free fields
such as the ones considered here by a theorem of Robinson. We calculate the
flow field of a particular solution and find it to have the form of a Hopf
fibration moving at the speed of light in a direction opposite to the
propagation of the pulsed light beam, a familiar structure in this type of
solution. The difference between smooth evolution of individual field lines and
conservation of electric and magnetic helicity is illustrated by considering a
further example in which the helicities are conserved, but the field lines are
not everywhere orthogonal. The field line configuration at time t=0 corresponds
to a nested family of torus knots but unravels upon evolution
