SERS investigation of neocuproine adsorption on silver: Influence of electrode potential on methyl groups

© 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Study of molecules adsorption on charged surfaces is important for biologically relevant substances where the potential at the interface such as living cell membrane is a significant parameter in the processes of their transportation or transmembrane penetration. In this work, a hybrid optical/electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique was applied to get new insight into the adsorption state and conformational equilibrium of neocuproine, which serves as a nucleic acid biosensor in clinical diagnostics and has biological activity towards several types of carcinoma. The density functional theory calculations performed for several rotational conformations and their anion radicals were used to determine the geometrical and energetic characteristics, to evaluate the rotational barrier, to obtain the vibrational assignment, and to consider the metal-adsorbate charge transfer. The dependence of SERS spectra on surface potential is ascribed to a change of the rotational dynamics of methyl groups from hindered to almost free at potentials ≤-200 mV. It is demonstrated for the first time that SERS spectroscopy is capable to recognize the surface species, which differ in the methyl group internal rotation

Combined application of low intensity pulsed ultrasound in dental implantation

To study the effect of to low-intensity low frequency pulsed ultrasound (LILFPUS) on the surface wettability of titanium dental implants, an experimental medical-technical model was developed, consisting of an ultrasonic device, a fixed-mounted digital photo/video camera and a laboratory stand with a smooth vertical feed, in which an ultrasound nozzle with an experimental dental implant and fastener with a control implant were fixed. As a wetting agent, 0.9 % sterile physiological sodium chloride solution was used in a petri dish tinted with brilliant green. Using the components of the model, it was possible to immerse the control and experimental dental implants, fixed on a laboratory stand, equally and uniformly at the same depth. The results of the studies showed that under the influence of ultrasound, the wetting of the surface of all the test samples was 100 %, and the wetting of the control samples was not observed

Characterizing Complex Polysera Produced by Antigen-Specific Immunization through the Use of Affinity-Selected Mimotopes

BACKGROUND: Antigen-based (as opposed to whole organism) vaccines are actively being pursued for numerous indications. Even though different formulations may produce similar levels of total antigen-specific antibody, the composition of the antibody response can be quite distinct resulting in different levels of therapeutic activity. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using plasmid-based immunization against the proto-oncogene HER-2 as a model, we have demonstrated that affinity-selected epitope mimetics (mimotopes) can provide a defined signature of a polyclonal antibody response. Further, using novel computer algorithms that we have developed, these mimotopes can be used to predict epitope targets. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: By combining our novel strategy with existing methods of epitope prediction based on physical properties of an individual protein, we believe that this method offers a robust method for characterizing the breadth of epitope-specificity within a specific polyserum. This strategy is useful as a tool for monitoring immunity following vaccination and can also be used to define relevant epitopes for the creation of novel vaccines

Predicting Player Experience Without the Player. An Exploratory Study

    Get PDF
A key challenge of procedural content generation (PCG) is to evoke a certain player experience (PX), when we have no direct control over the content which gives rise to that experience. We argue that neither the rigorous methods to assess PX in HCI, nor specialised methods in PCG are sufficient, because they rely on a human in the loop. We propose to address this shortcoming by means of computational models of intrinsic motivation and AI game-playing agents. We hypothesise that our approach could be used to automatically predict PX across games and content types without relying on a human player or designer. We conduct an exploratory study in level generation based on empowerment, a specific model of intrinsic motivation. Based on a thematic analysis, we find that empowerment can be used to create levels with qualitatively different PX. We relate the identified experiences to established theories of PX in HCI and game design, and discuss next steps

Organization of distance education in the subject “Аnimal physiology” with using the electronic learning platform MOODLE and YouTube video hosting

The current development level in IT contributes to the introduction of computer technology and other technologies in the learning process at various levels of education. Informatization of education is a process that provides the education sector with methodology and practice for the development and optimal use of modern information and communication technologies focused on implementing the psychological and pedagogical goals of education and training. Education institutions face the challenge of preparing a new generation of teachers to use the new learning tools in teaching practices effectively. Information technologies allow the university teacher to prepare and conduct practical classes and lectures and control activities effectively and at a new level. This article highlights the experience of organizing the educational process in a distance format using information computer technologies. It analyzes the work of the most common online distance learning platforms, with the help of which the educational process takes place at the State University of Biotechnology. The authors investigated the possibilities of the electronic learning platform MOODLE (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) for students of the Veterinary medicine and biotechnology faculties. An analysis of the advantages of the MOODLE distance learning platform and ways to eliminate its shortcomings was carried out, the main of which, according to the authors, is the need to adapt the teaching of one of the essential fundamental disciplines to the video format and provide the combination of visualization of the classroom performance of laboratory and practical work with the possibility of independent, remote work if available access to the Internet. It is claimed that the MOODLE platform can use a wide range of video files, but this is not enough for a perfect study of the discipline “Animal Physiology”. Due to the limitation of specific technical characteristics of the MOODLE platform, the authors introduced files from YouTube video hosting into the educational process, which required creating their content. In the article, the authors presented their views on the creation of a single virtual, informational environment that combines all available technological functions of the system of professional training of future doctors of veterinary medicine
