Large scale housing developments in Vienna - jewels of the late post war modernist legacy.

Abweichender Titel nach Übersetzung der Verfasserin/des VerfassersGroßstrukturen sind vielleicht die bedeutendsten Innovationen der Architektur der 1960er bis 1980er Jahre. In der späten Nachkriegsmoderne sind Großsiedlungen das architektonische Resultat von rasantem technischen Fortschritt und sozialen Utopien. Während Bauten der 1950er Jahre heute mit Anerkennung betrachtet werden, tritt man denen der darauffolgenden Jahrzehnten vergleichsweise noch oft noch mit Unverständnis entgegen. In Österreich entstammt so wie in den meisten europäischen Ländern mindestens 30% unserer gebauten Umwelt aus dieser Zeit und nur wenige Objekte wurden bisher unter Schutz gestellt. Wir entscheiden aktuell, was das geschützte Kulturgut von morgen darstellt. Nach einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Bautypus der Großsiedlung wird, anhand von ausgewählten Beispielen, ein Leitfaden zum denkmalwürdigen Umgang dieser Bauten erstellt. Ein Maßnahmenhandbuch soll die Akzeptanz und Wertschätzung von Siedlungsbauten der späten Nachkriegszeit unterstützten.Large scale communal housing structures could easily be the most significant architectural innovation between 1960 and 1980. As a result of fast technical improvements and a climate of social utopia, this late post-war period saw the development of an unprecedented amount of large scale housing constructions. While buildings of the 1950s and earlier benefit from ample recognition today, those of the following decades frequently encounter a lack of understanding. Although more than 30 percent of Austrias build heritage emanates from this time period (as in most European countries), few of these elements benefit from monument protection status. We are currently responsible for tomorrows cultural assets. After an examination of large scale housing developments as a building type, a guideline for an appropriate handling of those buildings will be suggested. A simple manual of action should support the acceptance and appreciation of those buildings.14
