THE PRECISION PSYCHIATRY. An Individualized Approach to the Diseases

    Get PDF
The Precision Psychiatry is a new emergent topic in Psychiatry, and is “an approach for treatment and prevention that takes into account each person’s variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle”. It promises to be even more transformative than in other fields of medicine, because the psychiatry has not yet benefited from the advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies that now form an integral part of other clinical specialties. It may be an epistemological change in the field of psychiatry. This paper briefly highlights the story, the features, and the future of the Precision Psychiatry. Indeed, this approach is becoming a reality with the availability of massive data (derived from physiological recordings, brain imaging, ‘omics’ biomarkers, environmental exposures, self-reported experience)

Identifying Expert Investors on Financial Microblog via Artificial Neural Networks

In the recent years, thanks to social media platform, a plethora of information has been available to financial investors, that were traditionally dependent from financial institutions advisors. Strategies are now shared among web users, performances of stocks are commented in web communities and hints and suggestions are travelling on the internet with a fast pace, in a way that was unthinkable few years before. Several attempts have been made in the recent past, to predict Market movements and trends from activity of Financial Social Networks participants, and to evaluate if contributions from individuals with high level of expertise distinguish themselves from the rest of crowd. The Present Work is leveraging 6 years of tweets extracted from the financial platform StockTwits.com, deep diving in its content, and proposing a predictive Neural Network algorithm of Multi-Layer Perceptron type, based on features derived from text, social network and sentiment analysis. Users have been classified based on the performance achieved during the training, consistence of their prediction has been verified throughout the time and, finally, a trading strategy has been proposed based on following the top actors. The outcomes highlighted that expert investors are outperforming the wisdom of the crowd, and the trading schema put together generated a return of 38.6%, in 2015, when S&P500 had a slightly negative balance

On finite-size effects in computer simulations using the Ewald potential

We discuss the origin and relevance for computer simulations of a strong finite-size effect that appears when using the Ewald summation formula. It can be understood as arising from a volume-dependent shift of the potential in a finite, periodic box relative to the infinite volume limit. This shift is due to the fact that the ``zero of energy'' for a periodic system cannot be defined by letting the interacting particles be separated by an infinite distance; the correct definition corresponds to setting its \bbox k=\bbox 0 Fourier mode to zero. The implications of this effect for computer simulations are discussed.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Chemical Physic

Can VMD improve the estimate of the muon g-2 ?

We show that a VMD based theoretical input allows for a significantly improved accuracy for the hadronic vacuum polarization of the photon which contributes to the theoretical estimate of the muon g-2. We also show that the only experimental piece of information in the τ\tau decay which cannot be accounted for is the accepted value for {\rm Br}(\tau \ra \pi \pi \nu_\tau), while the spectum lineshape is in agreement with expectations from e+e−e^+ e^- annihilations.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure Proceedings of the PhiPsi09, Oct. 13-16, 2009, Beijing, Chin

The Business of Empire: American Capitalists, the Nicaraguan Canal, and the Monroe Doctrine, 1849-1858

In the mid-nineteenth century, U.S. policymakers designed foreign policy to enhance the reach of American commerce and create a commercial empire in and through Latin America. To create this empire U.S policymakers wanted to construct a canal through Central America, which they envisioned as a joint enterprise between American businesses and the federal government. In 1849, Cornelius Vanderbilt and his associates reserved a charter from the Nicaraguan government to build and operate a canal and transit route through their county. Yet competition between varied business interests prompted the U.S. destruction of the Nicaraguan port city of San Juan del Norte and the rise of filibuster William Walker. This thesis argues that the 1854 bombardment of San Juan and the 1857 and 1858 arrests of Walker defined the Monroe Doctrine and constituted a vital turning point in the United States’ position in Central America. To grow the reach of U.S. merchants, Monroe had proclaimed the Western Hemisphere under the protection of the United States. But the doctrine left unclear how the U.S. would impose its control over the region. The events in Nicaragua set the course for how the United States would achieve a commercial empire in the following decades. Critical to these developments was the changing role of American businessmen in foreign policy and commercial growth. Before these events, policymakers had encouraged businessmen to take the lead, but the problems in Nicaragua caused policymakers to place military force at the forefront of expansion

Genetic Counseling Approaches To Moderate-Penetrance Breast Cancer

    Get PDF
ATM, CHEK2, and PALB2 are considered to be moderate-penetrance breast cancer susceptibility genes (MPBCSGs). MPBCSG mutation-carriers are predicted to have a lower risk for breast cancer than carriers of mutations in genes such as BRCA1, BRCA2, and other high-penetrance breast cancer susceptibility genes. Ninety-one practicing genetic counselors were surveyed to investigate genetic counselor utilization of the NCCN guidelines and recommendations for carriers of ATM, PALB2, and CHEK2 based on personal and family history of breast cancer. Although the majority indicated that they would follow the guidelines regardless of personal or family history of breast cancer, some genetic counselor recommendations exceeded NCCN guidelines when there was a personal and/or family history of breast cancer for an individual with a MPBCSG mutation. For counselors that said they would exceed the NCCN guidelines, additional recommendations included consideration of risk-reducing mastectomy, bilateral risk-reducing mastectomy, increased screening for relatives, a referral to a breast surgeon, and use of risk models to clarify breast MRI recommendations. Our study is the first to report trends in the field regarding approaches to providing genetic counseling regarding ATM, CHEK2, and PALB2. The results demonstrate that personal/family history of breast cancer is a significant predictor of genetic counselor recommendation

PSYCHIATRIC CAREGIVER STRESS: CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS OF COMPASSION FATIGUE

The capacity to work productively is a key component of health and emotional well-being. People who work in health care can be exposed to the fatigue of care. Compassion fatigue has been described as an occupational hazard specific to clinical work related severe emotional distress. In our study, we have evaluated compassion fatigue in a mental health group (47 psychiatric staff) and its relationship with inpatients (237 inpatients) affected by some psychiatric disorders. At baseline, the more significant data indicate a high percentage of Job Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in psychiatric nurses (respectively, 39.28%, 28.57%). Significant Compassion Fatigue percentage is present also in psychologist group (36.36%). Finally, in psychiatrists, the exposure to patients increased vicarious trauma (28.57%), but not job burnout. After a year of participation in Balint Groups, the psychiatric staff presented an overall reduction in total mean score in any administered scale (CBI: p<0.0000045; sCFs: (Vicarious Trauma: p<0.0288; Job Burnout: p<0.000001)). Thus, compassion fatigue causes concern among mental health professionals, and Balint Groups may represent a therapeutic strategy to help health professionals to face difficulties in challenging work environments
