Fishery sector has a place of pride in the national economy of India. Shrimps are the single item in the basket of marine products with universal taste-remain the backbone of Indian marine product export. Due to the declining trend of prawn catches from the sea, brackish water and fresh water prawn farming has immense scope to fulfill the growing demands of the population. The culture practices are mostly restricted to Penaeus sp. obviously because of certain special qualities attributed to it. However, in traditional prawn culture, practised in coastal waters, prawns other than Penaeus sp. also enter the culture system and grow. Thus about 60-80% o f the catch is contributed by Metapenaeus dobsoni and smaller sizes o i Penaeus indicus. M. dobsoni forms a major part o f the all India landing of prawn followed by P. indicus and P. monodon

Vertical propagation characteristics and seasonal variability of tidal wind oscillations in the MLT region over Trivandrum (8.5° N, 77° E): first results from SKiYMET Meteor Radar

Tidal activity in the Mesospheric Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region over Trivandrum (8.5° N, 77° E) is investigated using the observations from newly installed SKiYMET Meteor Radar. The seasonal variability and vertical propagation characteristics of atmospheric tides in the MLT region are addressed in the present communication. The observations revealed that the diurnal tide is more prominent than the semi/terdiurnal components over this latitude. It is also observed that the amplitudes of meridional components are stronger than that of zonal ones. The amplitude and phase structure shows the vertical propagation of diurnal tides with vertical wavelength of ~25 km. However, the vertical wavelength of the semidiurnal tide showed considerable variations. The vertical propagation characteristics of the terdiurnal tide showed some indications of their generating mechanisms. The observed features of tidal components are compared with Global Scale Wave Model (GSWM02) values and they showed a similar amplitude and phase structure for diurnal tides. Month-to-month variations in the tidal amplitudes have shown significant seasonal variation. The observed seasonal variation is discussed in light of the variation in tidal forcing and dissipation

Objective: This study attempts to analyze the severe ADRs in a tertiary care centre and assess their seriousness, outcome, causality and severity. We emphasize on the need for reporting of ADRs by all healthcare professionals as it will reduce the burden of morbidity due to drugs and ensure better and more efficient healthcare. To analyse and evaluate the severe ADVERSE DRUG REACTIONs reported from various departments in a Tertiary care Teaching hospital. Methods: It is a prospective observational study that was carried out over a period of 6 mo (from July 2016 to December 2016) to assess the percentage of severe adverse drug reactions reported to the Pharmacovigilance cell of a tertiary care teaching hospital. The data collected included patient's demographic details, presenting complaints, clinical diagnosis and details of the drug(s) prescribed. The data was analysed for causality (as per the WHO-UMC scale) and severity (as per Hartwig and Siegel scale). Results: Out of 64 ADRs reported, 17 were serious. The majority of serious ADRs were categorized as probable (82.35%), whilst 1(5.8%) was categorized as possible and 2(11.76%) as certain in nature. The criteria for the majority of serious ADRs were hospitalization (%) followed by intervention to prevent permanent impairment or damage (%).Conclusion: The highest percentage of severe cases was reported with Antitubercular therapy (23.5%) followed by analgesics (23%) and anti epileptic agents (17.6%)

STUDY TO EVALUATE USE OF IRRATIONAL FIXED DRUG COMBINATIONS

Objective: To identify fixed drug combinations causing the adverse drug reactions both rational and irrational. Methods: A prospective observational study was carried out over a period of 6 mo (between June 2016 to December 2016) to evaluate adverse drug reactions related to fixed drug combinations in a tertiary care teaching hospital using suspected adverse drug reaction reporting form. Results: A total number of 64 adverse drug reactions were reported during this period. Of the total adverse drug reactions reported, 27 (42%) were due to fixed drug combinations. 6 (28.5%) were serious and 21(71.5%) were non-serious. Causality was certain in 4 (14.8%) cases and probably in remaining 23 (85.2%) cases. 19(70%) irrational fixed drug combinations were reported. Conclusion: The above results show that irrational fixed drug combinations contribute major extent to adverse drug reactions. Hence, awareness programs should be conducted for all the health care workers to improve the rationality of prescription and to decrease adverse drug reactions

Revelation of graphene-Au for direct write deposition and characterization

Graphene nanosheets were prepared using a modified Hummer's method, and Au-graphene nanocomposites were fabricated by in situ reduction of a gold salt. The as-produced graphene was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). In particular, the HR-TEM demonstrated the layered crystallites of graphene with fringe spacing of about 0.32 nm in individual sheets and the ultrafine facetted structure of about 20 to 50 nm of Au particles in graphene composite. Scanning helium ion microscopy (HIM) technique was employed to demonstrate direct write deposition on graphene by lettering with gaps down to 7 nm within the chamber of the microscope. Bare graphene and graphene-gold nanocomposites were further characterized in terms of their composition and optical and electrical properties

Electronic and Thermoelectric Properties of RuIn_{3-x}A_{x} (A = Sn, Zn)

Recently, we reported [M. Wagner et al., J. Mater. Res. 26, 1886 (2011)] transport measurements on the semiconducting intermetallic system RuIn3 and its substitution derivatives RuIn_{3-x}A_{x} (A = Sn, Zn). Higher values of the thermoelectric figure of merit (zT = 0.45) compared to the parent compound were achieved by chemical substitution. Here, using density functional theory based calculations, we report on the microscopic picture behind the measured phenomenon. We show in detail that the electronic structure of the substitution variants of the intermetallic system RuIn_{3-x}A_{x} (A = Sn, Zn) changes in a rigid-band like fashion. This behavior makes possible the fine tuning of the substitution concentration to take advantage of the sharp peak-like features in the density of states of the semiconducting parent compound. Trends in the transport properties calculated using the semi-classical Boltzmann transport equations within the constant scattering time approximation are in good agreement with the former experimental results for RuIn_{3-x}Sn_{x}. Based on the calculated thermopower for the p-doped systems, we reinvestigated the Zn-substituted derivative and obtained ZnO-free RuIn_{3-x}Zn_{x}. The new experimental results are consistent with the calculated trend in thermopower and yield large zT value of 0.8.Comment: PRB Accepted, 11 pages, 10 figure
