Quality and Treatment of Sugar Industry Effluent -A Study

    Get PDF
The  sugar industry is facing an enormous problems to manage a massive quantity of effluent generation and its pollution load. The objective of the study is to discuss the sustainable treatment to reduce pollution load and discharge the effluent as per the prescribed standard of CPCB. A study was conducted on one sugar industry (M/S. DCM Shriram Limited, Uttar Pradesh, India). The efficiency of ETP was assessed with respect to parameters like pH, TSS, TDS, BOD, COD, and sulphate in two different setups, before (November 13, 2018 to March 24, 2019) and after (November 13, 2019 to March 24, 2020) the installation of the tube settler unit. There was not much variation in pH. The study revealed that after the installation of the tube settler unit, the quality of the treated water is improved and parameters like TSS, TDS, BOD, COD, and sulphate removal efficiency were increased from 69 to 87%, 42 to 63%, 79 to 94%, 75 to 85% and 20 to 64% respectively. The sugar industry effluent could meet statutory (surface waters and land disposal) standard of CPCB, 2016. The heavy metals like Zn, Fe, Cu and Cd evaluated by contamination factor (Cf) suggested that Zn, Fe and Cd falls under the category of moderate and  Cu fall under the category of considerable contamination

Introduction/purpose: Pata-type and Zamfirescu mappings are extended beyond metric spaces. Methods: The concept of Pata-type Zamfirescu mapping within the framework of S-metric spaces is employed. Results: A series of corresponding outcomes has been established. Furthermore, the obtained results are employed to solve an integral equation. Conclusions: S-Pata type and Zamfirescu mappings have unique fixed points. Zaključak: Preslikavanja tipa S-Pata i Zamfiresku imaju jedinstvene nepokretne tačke

Genomic investigations of unexplained acute hepatitis in children

Since its first identification in Scotland, over 1,000 cases of unexplained paediatric hepatitis in children have been reported worldwide, including 278 cases in the UK1. Here we report an investigation of 38 cases, 66 age-matched immunocompetent controls and 21 immunocompromised comparator participants, using a combination of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and immunohistochemical methods. We detected high levels of adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) DNA in the liver, blood, plasma or stool from 27 of 28 cases. We found low levels of adenovirus (HAdV) and human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) in 23 of 31 and 16 of 23, respectively, of the cases tested. By contrast, AAV2 was infrequently detected and at low titre in the blood or the liver from control children with HAdV, even when profoundly immunosuppressed. AAV2, HAdV and HHV-6 phylogeny excluded the emergence of novel strains in cases. Histological analyses of explanted livers showed enrichment for T cells and B lineage cells. Proteomic comparison of liver tissue from cases and healthy controls identified increased expression of HLA class 2, immunoglobulin variable regions and complement proteins. HAdV and AAV2 proteins were not detected in the livers. Instead, we identified AAV2 DNA complexes reflecting both HAdV-mediated and HHV-6B-mediated replication. We hypothesize that high levels of abnormal AAV2 replication products aided by HAdV and, in severe cases, HHV-6B may have triggered immune-mediated hepatic disease in genetically and immunologically predisposed children

Prices, expectations and the performance of the Indian stockmarket

The recent rise in the importance of the Indian stockmarket as an avenue of investment for the household sector and a source of funds for corporations provided the primary motivation for this research effort: an investigation into the informational efficiency of the Madras Stock Exchange, one of the four major stock exchanges in India. A stockmarket is informationally efficient if expectations formation in the market is characterised by the rational expectations hypothesis. Direct observations of share price expectations, specifically collected for the purposes of this thesis, are used in the analysis to obviate inference problems associated with typical stock market informational efficiency test procedures. In general it is found that informational efficiency is not an appropriate characterisation of expectations formation in the market and that traders rely on rules of thumb to generate stock price forecasts. As such it is unlikely that the kind of speculative behaviour witnessed in the Indian stockmarket in the last 150 years can be entirely explained by expectations revision that correctly reflects the implications of major information changes. It is recognised that the structure of incentives faced by stock traders are such that it may not be worth their while to refine their forecasting procedures. Essentially as starting hypotheses to build further on the results presented in this thesis, the existing regulations and institutional arrangements in the Indian stockmarket are examined to see what form public intervention should take in order to make the market more informationally efficient

Dapsone-induced pure red cell aplasia and cholestatic jaundice: A new experience for diagnosis and management

Dapsone (4,4′- diaminodiphenylsulfone) is the parent compound of the sulfones, and it has potent antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. It is used in the treatment of leprosy, dermatitis herpetiformis, and prophylactically to prevent Pneumocystis pneumonia and toxoplasmosis in patients unable to tolerate trimethoprim with sulfamethoxazole. We hereby report a case of dapsone toxicity who developed pure red cell aplasia and cholestatic jaundice in a suspected case of dermatitis herpetiformis. Patient had an excellent response to corticosteroids after withdrawal of dapsone
