Generalized seniority from random Hamiltonians
We investigate the generic pairing properties of shell-model many-body
Hamiltonians drawn from ensembles of random two-body matrix elements. Many
features of pairing that are commonly attributed to the interaction are in fact
seen in a large part of the ensemble space. Not only do the spectra show
evidence of pairing with favored J=0 ground states and an energy gap, but the
relationship between ground state wave functions of neighboring nuclei show
signatures of pairing as well. Matrix elements of pair creation/annihilation
operators between ground states tend to be strongly enhanced. Furthermore, the
same or similar pair operators connect several ground states along an isotopic
chain. This algebraic structure is reminiscent of the generalized seniority
model. Thus pairing may be encoded to a certain extent in the Fock space
connectivity of the interacting shell model even without specific features of

Supernova electron capture rates for 55Co and 56Ni
We have calculated the Gamow-Teller strength distributions for the ground
states and first excited states in 55Co and 56Ni. These calculations have been
performed by shell model diagonalization in the pf shell using the KB3
interaction. The Gamow-Teller distributions are used to calculate the electron
capture rates for typical presupernova conditions. Our 55Co rate is noticeably
smaller than the presently adopted rate as it is dominated by weak low-lying
transitions rather than the strong Gamow-Teller (GT) resonance which is located
at a higher excitation energy in the daughter than usually parametrized.
Although our 56Ni rate agrees with the presently adopted rate, we do not
confirm the conventional parametrization of the GT centroid. Our results
support general trends suggested on the basis of shell model Monte Carlo

Extracellular Matrix Hydrogel Promotes Tissue Remodeling, Arteriogenesis, and Perfusion in a Rat Hindlimb Ischemia Model.
ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine acellular extracellular matrix based hydrogels as potential therapies for treating peripheral artery disease (PAD). We tested the efficacy of using a tissue specific injectable hydrogel, derived from decellularized porcine skeletal muscle (SKM), compared to a new human umbilical cord derived matrix (hUC) hydrogel, which could have greater potential for tissue regeneration because of its young tissue source age.BackgroundThe prevalence of PAD is increasing and can lead to critical limb ischemia (CLI) with potential limb amputation. Currently there are no therapies for PAD that effectively treat all of the underlying pathologies, including reduced tissue perfusion and muscle atrophy.MethodsIn a rodent hindlimb ischemia model both hydrogels were injected 1-week post-surgery and perfusion was regularly monitored with laser speckle contrast analysis (LASCA) to 35 days post-injection. Histology and immunohistochemistry were used to assess neovascularization and muscle health. Whole transcriptome analysis was further conducted on SKM injected animals on 3 and 10 days post-injection.ResultsSignificant improvements in hindlimb tissue perfusion and perfusion kinetics were observed with both biomaterials. End point histology indicated this was a result of arteriogenesis, rather than angiogenesis, and that the materials were biocompatible. Skeletal muscle fiber morphology analysis indicated that the muscle treated with the tissue specific, SKM hydrogel more closely matched healthy tissue morphology. Short term histology also indicated arteriogenesis rather than angiogenesis, as well as improved recruitment of skeletal muscle progenitors. Whole transcriptome analysis indicated that the SKM hydrogel caused a shift in the inflammatory response, decreased cell death, and increased blood vessel and muscle development.ConclusionThese results show the efficacy of an injectable ECM hydrogel alone as a potential therapy for treating patients with PAD. Our results indicate that the SKM hydrogel improved functional outcomes through stimulation of arteriogenesis and muscle progenitor cell recruitment
Fluctuations in the Site Disordered Traveling Salesman Problem
We extend a previous statistical mechanical treatment of the traveling
salesman problem by defining a discrete "site disordered'' problem in which
fluctuations about saddle points can be computed. The results clarify the basis
of our original treatment, and illuminate but do not resolve the difficulties

Searching for spiral features in the outer Galactic disk. The field towards WR38 and WR38a
The detailed spiral structure in the outer Galactic disk is still poorly
known, and for several Galactic directions we rely on model extrapolations. One
of these regions is the fourth Galactic quadrant, in the sector comprised
between Vela and Carina (270 <l< 300) where no spiral arms have been detected
so far in the optical beyond 270. By means of deep UBVI photometry, we search
for spiral features in known low absorption windows.U photometry, although
demanding, constitutes a powerful tool to detect and characterize distant
aggregates, and allows to derive firmer distance estimates. We studied a
direction close to the tangent (l=290) to the Carina arm, in an attempt to
detect optical spiral tracers beyond the Carina branch, where radio
observations and models predictions indicate the presence of the extension of
the Perseus and Norma-Cygnus spiral arms in the fourth quadrant.Along this line
of sight, we detect three distinct groups of young stars. Two of them, at 2.5
and 6.0 kpc, belong to the Carina spiral arm (which is crossed twice in this
particular direction).The latter is here detected for the first time. The third
group, at a distance of 12.7 kpc, is part of the Perseus arm which lies beyond
the Carina arm, and constitutes the first optical detection of this arm in the
fourth Galactic quadrant. The position of this feature is compatible with HI
observations and model predictions. We furthermore present evidence that this
extremely distant group, formerly thought to be a star cluster (Shorlin 1), is
in fact a diffuse young population. In addition, our data-set does not support
the possible presence of the Monoceros Ring toward this direction. This study
highlights how multicolor optical studies can be effective to probe the spiral

Electron capture on iron group nuclei
We present Gamow-Teller strength distributions from shell model Monte Carlo
studies of fp-shell nuclei that may play an important role in the pre-collapse
evolution of supernovae. We then use these strength distributions to calculate
the electron-capture cross sections and rates in the zero-momentum transfer
limit. We also discuss the thermal behavior of the cross sections. We find
large differences in these cross sections and rates when compared to the naive
single-particle estimates. These differences need to be taken into account for
improved modeling of the early stages of type II supernova evolution
