    Simulations of Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction in Laue Geometry

    A method of computer simulation of Time-Resolved X-ray Diffraction (TRXD) in asymmetric Laue (transmission) geometry with an arbitrary propagating strain perpendicular to the crystal surface is presented. We present two case studies for possible strain generation by short-pulse laser irradiation: (i) a thermoelastic-like analytic model; (ii) a numerical model including effects of electron-hole diffusion, Auger recombination, deformation potential and thermal diffusion.     Like Sign Dilepton Signature for R-Parity Violating SUSY Search at the Tevatron Collider

    The like sign dileptons provide the most promising signature for superparticle search in a large category of RR-parity violating SUSY models. We estimate the like sign dilepton signals at the Tevatron collider, predicted by these models, over a wide region of the MSSM parameter space. One expects an unambiguous signal upto a gluino mass of 200−300200 - 300 GeV (≥500\geq 500 GeV) with the present (proposed) accumulated luminosity of ∼0.1 (1) fb−1\sim 0.1~(1)~{\rm fb}^{-1}.Comment: 12 page LaTeX file; 5 figures available upon request from the autho

    Multiplicity with a Thrust Cut

    We evaluate the multiplicity of hadrons in the e+e−e^+e^--annihilation at a given thrust TT in the modified leading-log approximation, including O(αs)O(\sqrt{\alpha_s}) corrections. The calculation is done at a large value of τ=1−T\tau =1-T by the use of the factorisation which takes place in the one-particle-inclusive cross section at a given τ\tau. At a small τ\tau, a different type of factorisation takes place, which also enable us to evaluate the multiplicity. Two approaches are compared numerically. Measuring this quantity near τ=1/3\tau =1/3, we can determine the multiplicity ratio between a gluon-jet and a quark-jet.Comment: OCHA-PP-32, LATEX FILE, 21

    Temperature dependence of narrow-band terahertz generation from periodically poled lithium niobate

    Femtosecond optical pulses are used to generate narrow-band terahertz wave forms via optical rectification in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal. By cooling the crystal to reduce losses due to phonon absorption, we are able to obtain bandwidths as narrow as 18 GHz at a carrier frequency of 1.8 THz. Temperature-dependent measurements show insignificant bandwidth broadening between 10 and 120 K, although the terahertz power substantially decreases as the temperature increases.     Collider discovery limits for supersymmetric Higgs bosons

    The prospects for discovery of the five Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric standard model are assessed for existing and planned future colliders, including LEP\,I, LEP\,II, LHC and SSC. As a benchmark for comparisons, we take a top-quark mass mt=150 m_t= 150\,GeV and squark mass parameter m~=1 \tilde m= 1\,TeV in evaluating one-loop radiative corrections; some results for other mtm_t values are also given. Searches based on the most promising production and decay channels are taken into account. For large regions in parameter space, detectable signals are predicted for one or more of the Higgs bosons, but there remains a region for which no signals would be visible at the above colliders.Comment: 24 pages, 23 postscript figures available on request.     A method is proposed for tagging the flavor of neutral BB mesons in the study of CP-violating decay asymmetries. The method makes use of a possible difference in interactions in BπB \pi or B∗πB^* \pi systems with isospins 1/2 and 3/2, and would be particularly clean if the I=1/2I = 1/2 systems can be detected as ``B∗∗B^{**}'' resonances.Comment: Submitted to Phys.     Are Parent Activation and Health Literacy Distinct Concepts? A Study in Low Income Urban Populations

    Patient activation (the knowledge, confidence, willingness, and skills to manage one’s healthcare) and health literacy have well-established associations with health and healthcare outcomes in adults. However, little is known about parent activation on behalf of children and its relation to health literacy. Our objective was to examine relations between parent activation, health literacy, and parent-provider relationship quality. We surveyed 316 Spanish- or English-speaking parents of publicly-insured patients of a general pediatrics clinic. Surveys included the Parent-Patient Activation Measure (P-PAM), the Newest Vital Sign (NVS), and parent-provider relationship measures. We used chi-square analyses and logistic regression to explore associations stratified by survey language.     Rational modification of an HIV-1 gp120 results in enhanced neutralization breadth when used as a DNA prime

    Background The identification of phenotypic features of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein that correlate with neutralization breadth is an important goal of HIV vaccine research. Recently we compared the immunogenic potential of two gp120s differing in their ability to utilize CD4; B33 (highly macrophage topic) and LN40 (non-macrophage tropic). Using a DNA prime protein boost regimen in New Zealand White Rabbits, LN40-primed sera displayed enhanced breadth compared to the B33-primed group, with differences in immunogenicity between groups modulated by specific residues within and flanking the V3 loop and the CD4bs. To better understand the role of these residues in eliciting breadth, we introduced reciprocal mutations between LN40 and B33 at these critical positions. Methods Three groups of four rabbits were primed with one of three chimeric LN40/B33 gp120 DNAs, followed by a polyvalent protein boost. Time course and endpoint titers were determined via ELISA. Neutralization breadth was analyzed by Monogram against a panel of sixteen viruses using a Phenosense neutralization assay. Anti-gp120 serum specificities were determined using a set of overlapping peptides spanning the entire gp120 via ELISA. Results We found that sera primed with a B33 chimera containing specific LN40 residues within the V3 loop and the CD4 binding loop displayed enhanced neutralization breadth against a cross-clade panel of Tier 1 and 2 viruses compared to the B33-primed group. Interestingly, a second B33 chimera containing two additional LN40 substitutions (Stu-Bsu R373/N386) within C3/V4 primed the broadest response, being broader than even the LN40-primed group. Additionally, peptide ELISAs showed differences in reactivity between priming groups which were most pronounced for the C3/V4 region, suggesting an important role for these regions in modulating serum antibody responses against gp120
