In the crystal structure of the title compound, C8H12N+·C3H3O4 −, the hydrogen malonate anions are linked into infinite chains parallel to the b axis by intermolecular O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds of the type COO−⋯HO2C in a head-to-tail fashion. The 4-ethylanilinium cations link adjacent anion chains by intermolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds into a two-dimensional network parallel to the b and c axes

Patterns of Surface Immobilized Block Copolymer Vesicle Nanoreactors

The immobilization and positioning of ultra small reaction vessels on solid supports open new pathways in applications such as lab-on-a-chip, sensors, microanalyses and microreactors. In our work block copolymer vesicles made from polystyrene-block-polyacrylic acid (PS-b-PAA) were immobilized from aqueous medium onto 3-amino propyl trimethoxysilane functionalized silicon surfaces exploiting electrostatic interactions. The immobilization of the vesicles was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, as well as fluorescence optical and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the influence of pH and ionic strength on the surface coverage of vesicles bound to the surface was elucidated. Finally micro-molding in capillaries (MIMIC) was utilized to create line patterns of the vesicles containing the enzyme trypsin and the fluorogenic substrate rhodamine 110 bisamide. The selective positioning of vesicle nanoreactors in conjunction with electrostatic immobilization serves as a proof of principle for potential applications in real-time observation of confined chemical reaction inside vesicles as nanocontainers and for the fabrication of integrated microarray systems

Characterization of the 4-canonical birationality of algebraic threefolds

In this article we present a 3-dimensional analogue of a well-known theorem of E. Bombieri (in 1973) which characterizes the bi-canonical birationality of surfaces of general type. Let XX be a projective minimal 3-fold of general type with Q\mathbb{Q}-factorial terminal singularities and the geometric genus pg(X)5p_g(X)\ge 5. We show that the 4-canonical map ϕ4\phi_4 is {\it not} birational onto its image if and only if XX is birationally fibred by a family C\mathscr{C} of irreducible curves of geometric genus 2 with KXC0=1K_X\cdot C_0=1 where C0C_0 is a general irreducible member in C\mathscr{C}.Comment: 25 pages, to appear in Mathematische Zeitschrif

A study on PDC drill bits quality

    Get PDF
The quality of innovating PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) bits materials needs to be determined with accuracy by measuring cutting efficiency and wear rate, both related to the overall mechanical properties. An original approach is developed to encompass cutting efficiency and wear contribution to the overall sample quality. Therefore, a lathe-type test device was used to abrade specific samples from various manufacturers. Post-experiment analyzes are based on models establishing coupled relationships between cutting and friction stresses related to the drag bits excavation mechanism. These models are implemented in order to evaluate cutting efficiency and to estimate wear of the diamond insert. Phase analysis by XRD and finite element simulations were performed to explain the role of physicochemical parameters on the calculated quality factor values. Four main properties of PDC material were studied to explain quality results obtained in this study: cobalt content in samples that characterizes hardness/fracture toughness compromise, undesired phase as tungsten carbide weakening diamond structure, diamond grains sizes and residual stresses distribution affecting abrasion resistance
