Fish composition in the Guadiamar River basin after one of the worst mining spills in Europe
On 25 April 1998, the tailing pond of the Los Frailes mine in Aznalcollar (Seville, Spain) ruptured, causing one of the most harmful environmental disasters in Europe in recent decades. Through the crack, 6 hm3 of acidic water and metallic mud were spilt, defaunating a large area of the Guadiamar River. After the spill cleanup and habitat restoration, multiple anthropogenic impacts continued to degrade the affected area. This work aimed to provide the most updated list of fish species in the Guadiamar River basin after the spill. Data were collected between 1999 and 2011 by electrofishing, light-traps, minnow-traps and multimesh gill-nests in 78 sampling sites. Species richness values for both native and exotic species in the Guadiamar River basin were high when compared with values for other right bank tributaries of the Guadalquivir River. This may be due to direct contact with the mouth of the Guadalquivir, which allowed the presence of migratory species. It may also be due to its location in the lower part of the Guadalquivir River basin, where exotic species accumulated. Among the Guadiamar River basin species, Luciobarbus sclateri and Squalius alburnoides have the widest distribution. The former is a generalist species resistant to unfavourable habitat changes, and the latter has a very successful breeding strategy. However, when focused on the affected area, there was a marked increase in exotic species, and both pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) and carp (Cyprinus carpio) co-dominated together with the native L. sclateri and S. alburnoides. The distribution of species within the river basin suggests that the upper section (except the Agrio reservoir) and middle section tributaries may be acting as native species shelters, while the affected area becomes an exotic species source. This information should be useful for monitoring future changes in the species composition and for management planning measures
Lovelock theories, holography and the fate of the viscosity bound
We consider Lovelock theories of gravity in the context of AdS/CFT. We show
that, for these theories, causality violation on a black hole background can
occur well in the interior of the geometry, thus posing more stringent
constraints than were previously found in the literature. Also, we find that
instabilities of the geometry can appear for certain parameter values at any
point in the geometry, as well in the bulk as close to the horizon. These new
sources of causality violation and instability should be related to CFT
features that do not depend on the UV behavior. They solve a puzzle found
previously concerning unphysical negative values for the shear viscosity that
are not ruled out solely by causality restrictions. We find that, contrary to
previous expectations, causality violation is not always related to positivity
of energy. Furthermore, we compute the bound for the shear viscosity to entropy
density ratio of supersymmetric conformal field theories from d=4 till d=10 -
i.e., up to quartic Lovelock theory -, and find that it behaves smoothly as a
function of d. We propose an approximate formula that nicely fits these values
and has a nice asymptotic behavior when d goes to infinity for any Lovelock
gravity. We discuss in some detail the latter limit. We finally argue that it
is possible to obtain increasingly lower values for the shear viscosity to

Proposal of a Nutritional Quality Index (NQI) to Evaluate the Nutritional Supplementation of Sportspeople
Background:
Numerous supplements are used by sportspeople. They are not always appropriate for the individual or the sports activity and may do more harm than good. Vitamin and mineral supplements are unnecessary if the energy intake is sufficient to maintain body weight and derives from a diet with an adequate variety of foods. The study objectives were to evaluate the main nutrients used as supplements in sports and to propose a nutritional quality index (NQI) that enables sportspeople to optimize their use of supplements and detect and remedy possible nutritional deficits.
Material and Methods:
A nutritional study was performed in 485 sportspeople recruited from Centros Andaluces de Medicina del Deporte, (CAMD). All completed socio-demographic, food frequency, and lifestyle questionnaires. The nutritional quality of their diet and need for supplementation were evaluated by scoring their dietary intake with and without supplementation, yielding two NQI scores (scales of 0-21 points) for each participant.
Results:
A superior mean NQI score was obtained when the supplements taken by participants were not included (16. 28 (SD of 3.52)) than when they were included (15.47 (SD: 3.08)), attributable to an excessive intake of some nutrients through supplementation.
Conclusions:
These results indicate that sportspeople with a varied and balanced diet do not need supplements, which appear to offer no performance benefits and may pose a health risk.The authors are grateful to the Junta de Andalucía, Spain (Research Group AGR-255“Nutrition. Exploring risk profiles and emergency frequency of purchasers and non-purchasers of personal emergency alarms: A prospective cohort study
© 2015 De San Miguel et al. Background: Personal alarms support independent living and have the potential to reduce serious consequences after a fall or during a medical emergency. While some Australian states have government funded personal alarm programs, others do not; but user-pays services are available. Although several studies have examined the profiles of alarm users, little is known about the risk profile of non-users. Specifically, whether there are "at risk" individuals who are unable, or choose not to purchase a service, who experience a home-based emergency in which an alarm could have mitigated an adverse outcome. This study aimed to describe the 'risk profile' of purchasers and non-purchasers of alarms; explore the reasons behind the decision to purchase or not to purchase and identify how often emergency assistance was needed and why. Methods: Purchasers and non-purchasers were followed for one year in this prospective cohort study. Demographic, decision-making and risk factor data were collected at an initial face-to-face interview, while information about emergencies was collected by monthly calls. Results: One hundred and fifty-seven purchasers and sixty-five non-purchasers completed the study. The risk profiles between the groups were similar in terms of gender, living arrangements, fall history and medical conditions. Purchasers (Mean = 82.6 years) were significantly older than non-purchasers (Mean = 79.3 years), (t(220) = -3.38, p = 0.000) and more functionally dependent on the IADL (z = -2.57, p = 0.010) and ADL (z = -2.45 p = 0.014) function scores. Non-purchasers (Mean = 8.04, SD = 3.57) were more socially isolated with significantly fewer family networks than purchasers (Mean = 9.46, SD = 3.25) (t(220) = -2.86, p = 0.005). Both groups experienced similarly high numbers of emergencies, 38.2 % of purchasers and 41.5 % of non-purchasers had at least one emergency where an alarm could have assisted. Main reasons for non-purchase were: cost (77 %), limited alarm range (51 %), no need (39 %) and lack of suitable contacts (30 %). Conclusion: There are older individuals who are at high risk of an emergency who are choosing, often for financial and lack of family support reasons, not to purchase a personal alarm service. Greater availability of government funded subsidy schemes would enable these individuals to access a service. Increasing the range over which alarms work could increase their appeal to a broader range of older persons living in the community. Future research should consider how strategies that improve social isolation from family and challenge clients' beliefs about their own health and independence can support increased access to personal alarm services
Transition of plasmodium sporozoites into liver stage-like forms is regulated by the RNA binding protein pumilio
Many eukaryotic developmental and cell fate decisions that are effected post-transcriptionally involve RNA binding proteins as regulators of translation of key mRNAs. In malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.), the development of round, non-motile and replicating exo-erythrocytic liver stage forms from slender, motile and cell-cycle arrested sporozoites is believed to depend on environmental changes experienced during the transmission of the parasite from the mosquito vector to the vertebrate host. Here we identify a Plasmodium member of the RNA binding protein family PUF as a key regulator of this transformation. In the absence of Pumilio-2 (Puf2) sporozoites initiate EEF development inside mosquito salivary glands independently of the normal transmission-associated environmental cues. Puf2- sporozoites exhibit genome-wide transcriptional changes that result in loss of gliding motility, cell traversal ability and reduction in infectivity, and, moreover, trigger metamorphosis typical of early Plasmodium intra-hepatic development. These data demonstrate that Puf2 is a key player in regulating sporozoite developmental control, and imply that transformation of salivary gland-resident sporozoites into liver stage-like parasites is regulated by a post-transcriptional mechanism
Hybridization and invasive species in a threatened freshwater fish community under environmental pressures: Morphometric and molecular evidence
Mediterranean freshwater systems are under threat owing to increased drought driven by climate change, intensive human land uses and non-native species. This is causing increased fish hybridization in isolated watercourses. The genetic and morphological characteristics of hybrids of sympatric native and non-native fish species were studied in four streams of the Mediterranean Guadalquivir basin (south-west Spain). Fish morphology was analysed using geometric morphometrics, and molecular determination of parenthood was inferred through one mitochondrial gene (cytb) and one nuclear gene (Beta-actin) for all hybrids and a subset of pure parental specimens. Molecular analyses confirmed hybrids between the native Squalius alburnoides and non-native Alburnus alburnus in a stream with continuous flow. Haplotype analyses suggested that they originated from backcrossing of hybrid offspring. Intergeneric crosses between native species S. alburnoides and Pseudochondrostoma willkommii, and S. alburnoides and Iberochondrostoma lemmingii were detected in streams under reduced connectivity scenarios. Morphometrics revealed that hybrid phenotypes were similar to S. alburnoides. In some cases, molecular markers uncovered hybridization events that were neither detected in the field nor by morphometric analyses, potentially supporting a backcrossing/introgression scenario. Hybridization is likely to be increasing in Mediterranean rivers where S. alburnoides are present owing to increased fragmentation caused by summer drought exacerbated by climate change and human land uses and pressures. This can become a problem for these endemic vulnerable species if genetic diversity is lost, morphological homogenization occurs and hybrids cannot be easily detected in the field. The potential risks could be addressed by monitoring and eradication of non-native species and segregation from natives. To avoid native–native crosses, habitat quality and desiccation risk could be tackled by improved water quality and riparian reforestation to provide shade and reduce evapotranspiration. This would need increased coordination and intervention between the institutions that share conservation responsibilities in the area
Impact of the clinical context on the 14-3-3 test for the diagnosis of sporadic CJD
BACKGROUND: The 14-3-3 test appears to be a valuable aid for the clinical diagnosis of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) in selected populations. However, its usefulness in routine practice has been challenged. In this study, the influence of the clinical context on the performance of the 14-3-3 test for the diagnosis of sCJD is investigated through the analysis of a large prospective clinical series. METHODS: Six hundred seventy-two Spanish patients with clinically suspected sCJD were analyzed. Clinical classification at sample reception according to the World Health Organization's (WHO) criteria (excluding the 14-3-3 test result) was used to explore the influence of the clinical context on the pre-test probabilities, and positive (PPV) and negative (NPV) predictive values of the 14-3-3 test. RESULTS: Predictive values of the test varied greatly according to the initial clinical classification: PPV of 98.8%, 96.5% and 45.0%, and NPV of 26.1%, 66.6% and 100% for probable sCJDi (n = 115), possible sCJDi (n = 73) and non-sCJDi (n = 484) cases, respectively. According to multivariate and Bayesian analyses, these values represent an improvement of diagnostic certainty compared to clinical data alone. CONCLUSION: In three different contexts of sCJD suspicion, the 14-3-3 assay provides useful information complementary to clinical and electroencephalographic (EEG) data. The test is most useful supporting a clinical impression, whilst it may show deceptive when it is not in agreement with clinical data
Ultrasound in the evaluation of enthesitis: status and perspectives
Introduction: An increasing number of studies have applied ultrasound to the evaluation of entheses in spondyloarthritis patients. However, no clear agreement exists on the definition of enthesitis, on the number and choice of entheses to examine and on ultrasound technique, which may all affect the results of the examination. The objectives of this study were to first determine the level of homogeneity in the ultrasound definitions for the principal lesions of enthesitis in the published literature and second, to evaluate the metric properties of ultrasound for detecting enthesitis according to the OMERACT filter. Methods: Search was performed in PUBMED and EMBASE. Both grey-scale and Doppler definitions of enthesitis, including describing features of enthesitis, were collected and metrological qualities of studies were assessed. Results: After selection, 48 articles were analyzed. The definition of ultrasound enthesitis and elementary features varied among authors. Grey-scale enthesitis was characterized by increasing thickness (94% of studies), hypoechogenicity (83%), enthesophytes (69%), erosions (67%), calcifications (52%), associated bursitis (46%) and cortical irregularities (29%). Only 46% of studies reported the use of Doppler. High discrepancies were observed on frequency, type of probe and Doppler mode used. Face and content validity were the most frequently evaluated criteria (43%) followed by reliability (29%) and responsiveness (19%). Conclusions: Ultrasound has evidence to support face, content validity and reliability for the evaluation of enthesitis, though there is a lack of well-reported methodology in most of the studies. Consensus on elementary lesions and standardization of exam is needed to determine the ultrasound definition of enthesitis in grey-scale and in Doppler for future applications.15 page(s
