Pleurotus ostreatus spent mushroom substrate for the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: the case study of a pilot dynamic biopile for the decontamination of a historically contaminated soil

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hazardous contaminants. Bio-based technology is among recommended practices for the recovery of PAH contaminatedmatrices. The objective of the study was to validate the exploitation of spent mushroom substrate (SMS), an organic waste deriving from the industrial production of Pleurotus ostreatus, as bulking agent in a dynamic biopile pilot plant, because of the SMS potential oxidative capacity towards aromatic recalcitrant compounds. The dynamic biopile pilot plant treated 7 tons of a historically PAH contaminated soil (6469±423mg PAHs kg−1), classified as dangerous waste. RESULTS: Themixing of SMSwith soilwasmandatory for the depletion of PAHs, which after 8months,were at significantly lower concentrations (112±5mg PAHs kg−1). The treated soil was capable of reintroduction to the industrial site of origin. However, a residual genotoxicity of soil elutriates at the end of the process wasmeasured on root tips of Vicia faba L. CONLUSIONS: The SMS derived from the industrial production of P. ostreatus is exploitable as a versatile low cost organic substrate with oxidative capacity towards PAHs and its exploitation as a bulking agent in biopiles is advantageous for the disposal of the organic waste

RECOVERING OF DREDGED SEDIMENTS CONTAMINATED BY TOTAL PETROLEUM HYDROCARBON TO PRODUCTIVE SOILS: THE MYCOREMEDIATION APPROACH IN THE BIORESNOVA PROJECT

    Get PDF
Chemo-physical treatments to remove salinity and metal contamination from dredged sediments were applied in combination to bio-based approaches (mycoremediation). New fungal specimen were isolated from the contaminated sediments, massively grown and re-inoculated in the matrix in treatment to remove the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon contamination (TPH). Toxicological assays were exploited to estimate the sediment remediation efficiency over time. Indeed, the only chemical characterization of polluted matrices does not allow to predict the residual toxicity of the latter eventually related to the permanence of a residual contamination by the parental pollutants, to their degradation intermediates and/or to the synergic actions of the both. Higher plants (Vicia faba L.) were exploited as indicators of the quality of the treated sediments and used both for the continuous monitoring of the remediation processes and for the evaluation of the final product eco-safety. Biological parameters such as the genotoxicity by means of cytological analysis of mitotic behavior of root meristems were evaluated based on the detection of chromosomal aberrations in mitotic cells, and of micronuclei formation, detectable in interphase cells. The combination of the Chemo-physical and the Bio-based approach was able to remove the organic contamination (TPH) and the excess of sodium salts that constitute a critical point for the eventual re-allocation of dredged sediments. At the same time the sediments were detoxified and actually gained the biochemical traits of humified productive soils, eventually suitable for their safe re-allocation in the environment

Neuroticism and Conscientiousness Moderate the Effect of Oral Medication Beliefs on Adherence of People with Mental Illness during the Pandemic

    Get PDF
Background. After the declaration of the pandemic status in several countries, the continuity of face-to-face visits in psychiatric facilities has been delayed or even interrupted to reduce viral spread. Little is known about the personality factors associated with medication beliefs and adherence amongst individuals with mental illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. This brief report describes a preliminary naturalistic longitudinal study that explored whether the Big Five personality traits prospectively moderate the effects of medication beliefs on changes in adherence during the pandemic for a group of outpatients with psychosis or bipolar disorder. Methods. Thirteen outpatients undergoing routine face-to-face follow-up assessments during the pandemic were included (41 observations overall) and completed the Revised Italian Version of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory, the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire, the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8-item and the Beck Depression Inventory-II. Results. Participants had stronger concerns about their psychiatric medications rather than beliefs about their necessity, and adherence to medications was generally low. Participants who had more necessity beliefs than concerns had better adherence to medications. People scoring higher in Conscientiousness and Neuroticism traits and more concerned about the medication side effects had poorer adherence. Conclusions. These preliminary data suggest the importance of a careful assessment of the adherence to medications amongst people with psychosis/bipolar disorder during the pandemic. Interventions aimed to improve adherence might focus on patients' medication beliefs and their Conscientiousness and Neuroticism personality traits

Measurement of the Bs0→J/ψKS0B_s^0\to J/\psi K_S^0 branching fraction

    Get PDF
The Bs0→J/ψKS0B_s^0\to J/\psi K_S^0 branching fraction is measured in a data sample corresponding to 0.41fb−1fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. This channel is sensitive to the penguin contributions affecting the sin2ÎČ\beta measurement from B0→J/ψKS0B^0\to J/\psi K_S^0 The time-integrated branching fraction is measured to be BF(Bs0→J/ψKS0)=(1.83±0.28)×10−5BF(B_s^0\to J/\psi K_S^0)=(1.83\pm0.28)\times10^{-5}. This is the most precise measurement to date

    Roadmap on thermoelectricity

    Get PDF
The increasing energy demand and the ever more pressing need for clean technologies of energy conversion pose one of the most urgent and complicated issues of our age. Thermoelectricity, namely the direct conversion of waste heat into electricity, is a promising technique based on a long-standing physical phenomenon, which still has not fully developed its potential, mainly due to the low efficiency of the process. In order to improve the thermoelectric performance, a huge effort is being made by physicists, materials scientists and engineers, with the primary aims of better understanding the fundamental issues ruling the improvement of the thermoelectric figure of merit, and finally building the most efficient thermoelectric devices. In this Roadmap an overview is given about the most recent experimental and computational results obtained within the Italian research community on the optimization of composition and morphology of some thermoelectric materials, as well as on the design of thermoelectric and hybrid thermoelectric/photovoltaic devices

Opposite-side flavour tagging of B mesons at the LHCb experiment

    Get PDF
The calibration and performance of the oppositeside flavour tagging algorithms used for the measurements of time-dependent asymmetries at the LHCb experiment are described. The algorithms have been developed using simulated events and optimized and calibrated with B + →J/ψK +, B0 →J/ψK ∗0 and B0 →D ∗− ÎŒ + ΜΌ decay modes with 0.37 fb−1 of data collected in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV during the 2011 physics run. The oppositeside tagging power is determined in the B + → J/ψK + channel to be (2.10 ± 0.08 ± 0.24) %, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic

Search for CP violation in D+→K−K+π+D^{+} \to K^{-}K^{+}\pi^{+} decays

    Get PDF
A model-independent search for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo suppressed decay D+→K−K+π+D^+ \to K^- K^+\pi^+ in a sample of approximately 370,000 decays is carried out. The data were collected by the LHCb experiment in 2010 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb−1^{-1}. The normalized Dalitz plot distributions for D+D^+ and D−D^- are compared using four different binning schemes that are sensitive to different manifestations of CP violation. No evidence for CP asymmetry is found.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
